These very different clutchmates crack me up. I've been calling the top one The Cat's Pajamas and the bottom one The Emperor or Tony Starkers, depending on my mood.

I hope everyone's been keeping their reptile buddos at appropriate temps as a lot of the US at least hit a heat wave. In case air conditioning goes out, make sure you have enough deli cups, cooling packs, and reusable coolers or insulated boxes so you can pack temp sensitive species up if you're waiting for those overworked HVAC folks to come to your rescue! It's a lot easier to keep a cooler or two at the right temp than a whole room.

Temp reminder:

I hope all folks that are losing power on and off through winter storms are staying safe. Please remember that if your home gets hit and your reptiles' temps drop, you don't want to be feeding them. Low temps slow body processes like digestion and food will sit, not moving much, in the gut. With healthy crested geckos, it's safe to skip a few days if you lose power.

A styrofoam lined cooler or box with a heat pack like Uni-Heat brand approved for reptile shipping (please, not human hand warmers as those spike so hot), and with each gecko in its own deli cup or Tupperware inside that box, can help keep them at a reasonable temperature for a few days if temps drop too low.

As always, monitor any animals that you use a heat source with. It's best to have a heat pack on one end of a cooler and the animals on the other so no container is sitting right on it.

A bit of a dark topic because we're seeing so many people "rescuing" animals this time of year: is it truly rescue if you don't have the heart - or funds - to help end the suffering of a sickly animal?

Lots of kind-hearted people believe that all maladies that reptiles see can be fixed, or worked with. This isn't the case, especially in cases of extreme, body-deforming metabolic bone disease (MBD). With MBD, bones can break easily, and the majority of our available h**p vet technologies are not far along enough to build a cast that will reshape, say, a small lizard's ribcage.

If a gecko has a single arm bone that's been broken, sure, see if you can get a vet to splint it and get calcium treatments coming.

But once a small gecko like a crested gets to the point of having dozens of tiny bones broken in its legs so it's walking on its wrists permanently, or its ribcage is mangled, even if you rescue it from a bad situation, loading the animal up with calcium again may make those breaks "heal," but they will most often be healed in a deformed way, where bone presses on organ.

We don't have a gauge for their pain. They will keep trying to chug along even if they're hurting. This is why it's so terribly important, if you are into rescuing animals, that you -truly- rescue - and that means having a mindset where you are open to a veterinarian you can trust, who won't be afraid to tell you when an animal is absolutely suffering and should be shown mercy.

This should not be seen as "giving up" on an animal.

Believe me - I know how hard it is. I've said goodbye to my share of pets through the years and it never gets easy. But sometimes a soft and quiet farewell is the most kind thing we can do for the ones we take in.
