This year's dry bean harvest was more abundant than we've ever seen, but that's not saying too much. It's been a back and forth, hit or miss sort of crop for us over the years. Nevertheless, we celebrate what we've got!

The magical legumes of 2024, in limited supply, through the new year or until sold out.

It's been a pretty strange year...

An unusually wet winter led to later-than-usual spring plantings. Unpredictable summer temps have thrown tomatoes, peppers, cukes, and zukes for a loop.

As farmers, know-how only gets you so far. There's a fair amount of trust and surrender, too. Freshly-prepped beds are the clean slates that promise something better is around the corner.

To what's to come! 🚜

Spade & Plow February Newsletter - https://mailchi.mp/22a0b76749ae/spade-plow-february-newsletter

As many of our fellow Bay Area farm neighbors have, we’re seeing the effects of a mild 2021 summer and an onslaught of heavy rains earlier this winter. Some crops are slower to come on, while others (hellO romanescO!) are coming in hot this February. Timing has been a little off, all around. Some...

And just like that, another year ahead of us on the pack line.

The days go by slow (especially in the cold, wet of winter!), but the weeks and months fly by.

Hard to believe what we've grown together these past 7 years. What we've packed across these 50 feet, time and time again. It all started here.

Your CSA membership has helped launch us into some incredible markets, restaurants, and tables over the years, and we are so grateful for the hands we've shaken, smiles exchanged, and support we've received. We're eager to continue to grow with you and your families.

If you're new to us, welcome!
We're Spade & Plow, a 100 acre organic farm in the heart of Santa Clara County.

Stay nourished.
Stay hungry.
The best is yet to come.
🤜✨🤛

Last call!

The cutoff for ordering summer transplants is this Wednesday, 4/21.
We might have a few left over for sale at the farmers markets, but take a look online to ensure you get the items you really, really want for your garden.

"If you really want to make a friend, go to someone's house and eat with him...The people who give you their food give you their heart." -César Chávez

On Trans Day of Visibility. On César Chávez Day. On all other days when their voices aren't amplified on social media. Our stories are how we find ourselves in one another. Thank goodness for shared tables and shared spaces, which offer us the opportunity to listen and connect, to advocate and transform.

To give and receive the nourishment of food and community is to be human.

We see you.
We stand (and sit) with you.

Farmer(s) Spotlight: Venus y Germán B.

THE Spade & Plow MVPs. Folks, this power couple has been with us nearly as long as the farm has been in operation. Germán is in his 70s and often remarks that farming keeps him moving and keeps him young. Venus is a warm, quiet voice of reason. They can bunch turnips and carrots faster than anyone -- nearly as quickly as they'll put a smile on your face.

We wouldn't be S&P without them!

Our Story

Mike and his two sons Nick and Sam first got the idea for Spade & Plow after working several years in big corporate ag. Managing large thousand plus acres farms, large sales teams, and gigantic distribution coolers.

"We were all tired of the corporate way, and we new it could be better."

It started with an idea of connecting the consumer directly to the farmer, and growing the best tasting varieties of organic fruits and vegetables for the South Bay Community. They saw the threat of development and the disappearing farm land of "the Valley of the Heart's Delight" and wanted to preserve it.

Spade & Plow Organics got it's start in 2015, after finding 10 acres to lease in San Martin, CA. They worked the land, watered, weeded, and planted their first seed without a clear idea where our first harvest would go. But with an intention of sustainability, the Thorp family decided to create fresh, clean, certified organic fruits and vegetables accessible and affordable to Santa Clara County residents. To date, they've added on another 27 acre property also in San Martin, that has allowed them to increase our production, preserving more agricultural lands in Santa Clara County.
