Someone asked how long it takes to do all the animal chores per day.

On weekdays, when the kids are in school, it takes 1 person (Mom or Dad, depending on who's taking the kids to school) 3-4 hours.
Evening animal chores are about 2 hours.

On weekends, or when school is on break, each person in our family takes about 30-45 min each in the morning for their assigned animal chores.

Can you see why Mom and Dad miss summer break? 🤣

We put our sweet Daisy Duke to sleep today, after several months of palliative care for disease related to her reproductive tract.

She fell asleep one final time with her favorite human (Susanna, 12 yrs old) comforting her. And then Rambo walked over to comfort a very sad Susanna.

Daisy came to us over a year ago from a family who couldn't keep her anymore, as she was crowing and disturbing the neighbors. Once we got her in with our rooster, she stopped crowing and didn't need to act like the male anymore. We'll miss her.

Happy Saturday, from Lefty and Cotton!

This duo came to us last year from . Lefty has a bad left eye, and he can only see out of his right. He will sometimes fly into you if you're standing on his left side. But, he's easy to catch from his left side if you need to take a look at him or give him medications.

Anyway, that doesn't stop us, or Cotton, from loving him.

One of these cuties is really angry about cuddling.

Esther 🦆 has been with us for 1.5 yrs, after a raccoon attack at Lake Merritt in Oakland California. took her in for veterinary care, and she came to us to continue her at-home vet care with tube feedings and pain medications.

Now that the kids are back in school, our 12 yr old made a diagram on how we should be feeding the chickens.

My head hurts 🤯. It only took 10 times studying it on my phone to figure out where she wants me to put all the bowls and how much food in each bowl.

But seriously, hooray for animal caretakers❤️. Always trust what they say about their animals; they always know their animals best and make all kinds of adjustments in their care to make sure their animals are happy.

🦆Look at our beautiful Eleanor, a female Muscovy duck mix.

She came to us last year from with 2 other ducks (Theo and Franklin). Since her arrival, she has made herself at home and likes to be the boss of everyone. She loves hanging out with her 2 boys, and enjoys a good worm hunt with the other females.

It's been 1.5 yrs since we took in our first waterfowl, and we know now that we'll never be without ducks. They are such happy birds who enjoy whatever you have planned for them.

🐔 We're pretty certain the girls didn't wish for a biweekly chore of chicken butt baths, but here we are.

Whenever I say it's time for chicken baths, they don't jump for joy, but they don't whine and complain about it either, so I guess that's a win! 👍🏽

Diana (7 yrs old) even volunteered to be the gloved hand that works on the rear for everyone, and then I double check things before chickens are released back to their flock.

Shaman loves when you look at him.

He came to us in 2023 from with a flock of 12 pigeons who had been found as strays in Oakland. He's one of our smaller pigeons, but BIG in personality. As soon as you lay eyes on him, he struts around with his tail fanned out to try to wow you.

Yesterday, we said goodbye to Fudge, Toffee and Caramel. We had been fostering them for the past 6 months. Born in the shelter about 1.5 yrs ago, they've been waiting for a chance at a new life.

They are getting their chance now! They are going to another rescue that specializes in rabbits, and we couldn't be happier for them. This trio of white was such a fun group of bunnies to have in our care, and they loved chasing each other, flipping stacking cups, chewing on their baskets, and eating their greens. We know they'll find their wonderful forever home at the new rescue.

What's the best training tool for animals?

FOOD
Anything we do that the animals don't like to do - we try to incorporate food into the task. It keeps them occupied, it gives them positive reinforcement, and lets them know there's a reward for what we're doing.

Lizzie doesn't love nail trims. But, we can get her to stand still for almost anything if we have grain, alfalfa, grape leaves, beet tops, apples...basically anything that can go in her mouth. 😋

Team Oak Rock Acupuncture, reporting for volunteer duty!

We went for our weekly volunteer acupuncture session at . Our patient had a rough week with some GI issues, but he's feeling better and walking a bit better since the start of treatment.

The younger 1/3 of our team also got to exercise Napoleon, a mini pony therapy horse. Next week, school starts, so the adults of Team Acupuncture will be doing this acupuncture without kid help 😥.

Can you believe we have 140 lives represented on this wall?

Every life our sanctuary has helped here - whether foster or permanent resident - makes it up on our mural. We have it divided into seasons - Fall (when we first became an animal rescue in Fall '22), Winter, Spring, Summer. Each animal gets put up on the wall in the season they were taken in, with the date and their name.

As the years go by, our mural will become packed with animals, as will our memories of all the animals who needed us. 💕

RIP, sweet LC 😢

LC (Lil' Chicken - who is actually a quail) came to us last year by way of , who took her in from an owner surrendering her care to them.

LC was the cutest. She was already experiencing arthritis when she came to us, but was happy as can be: chirping, always hungry, and laying pretty blue eggs. We gave her treatment for her arthritis over the past year, including medications and acupuncture. We also modified her enclosure to accommodate her disability. Over the past few weeks, her mobility significantly diminished and we made the decision to take away her pain by putting her to rest last night.

Sometimes, the best decision for an animal is the hardest one for you. 💔

Rosebud 🐔 is receiving end-of-life care during her final days/weeks at our sanctuary.

She has an abdominal tumor with fluid, and we've had her on daily pain meds and fluid taps. She still walks around to forage, hangs out with friends, and seems to enjoy her life. You can see she stands at an angle, though, which is a common sign of abdominal disease.

It is an honor to give sanctuary animals their final peaceful days with us. But, don't think for a minute that it's easy. We fret. We obsess over symptoms. We wonder if today's the day to make the decision, or is it tomorrow? Or next week? For now, we don't think today's the day for Rosebud. ❤️

King Pansy 🐇 waiting for his bedtime treat.

Pansy and our foster bunnies get access to their ex-pens all day so they have room to run around, play with their toys, and hide in their boxes. At night, we give them a leafy green treat and tuck them into their cages to sleep.

This has resulted in a well-trained bedtime Pansy. He sees us at night and immediately runs to his cage and waits. 🥬

🐇🐰We're 3 weeks into our bonding process with Pansy and Steph. Is it smooth sailing? No - there's nipping each other, ignoring each other, and one full on fight with fur flying. But, did you know that this can be completely normal for the bonding process? They are establishing a relationship and learning how to read each others' signals. Some days it goes well, and other days they have setbacks. We're still working on it, though, and everyday we work on building their friendship. Our bees were getting ready to swarm, which is their purpose in life: to reproduce and split their colonies. Our hives have been growing, so we had to order more equipment and put it all together. The Rankin kids, adults, and our high school volunteer @julianna_04costa put together 40 frames/foundation and 5 hive boxes. The bees build their comb for honey and brood on the frames/foundation. After a year and a half of struggling with nail trims, we've finally developed a system for trimming Lizzie's nails without stress or wrestling. We're teaching our guests how to medicate our chickens. Some of our chickens are on medications to help with pain from leg issues. Rainbow is a large-bodied chicken who has had a limp since birth.
