Jen tried her hand at capturing the beautiful egg colors we’re getting this season. They say it’s best to try & capture their true colors on an overcast day in natural light. You can zoom in to see the beautiful speckles on many of them. Pictures just don’t do them justice!

Fun with the new chicken feeder install this past weekend. We increased our feeder capacity from 45 lbs to 105 lbs! This will lighten some of our load refilling feed throughout the week! We also added another waterer going from 10 gal capacity to 15!

Glamour shots with P. Sausage “Sage” our little crazy one! She’s a Golden Laced Polish. She lays the cutest little white eggs in a tree instead of in the nest boxes like the rest of her flock. She flies the fence every day to visit the goats & chickens at our tolerant neighbors house. She’s a wild one, this girl! She’s 8 months old.

The new brooder setup is complete! This is the brooder. We have the Little Red Barn in our temp controlled garage bathroom. The chicks will go from incubator to brooder close by where we can monitor closely. After a few weeks they’ll move out to the big brooder in the unheated shed where they’ll still have a brooder heat plate along with a heated area of brooder floor. We have the out there. It looks just like this one but much larger for growing chicks!! Now we wait for hatch day in 2 weeks!

Fun facts about Farm Fresh Eggs & Chickens

Eggs are laid with a protective layer called “bloom” that seals the pores on the egg to keep bacteria from entering.

Unwashed eggs can stay on the counter for several weeks.

Washed eggs must be refrigerated and last up to two months.

Store your eggs upside down to help keep the fresh.

Chickens are omnivores. They love bugs, frogs, snakes, mice and other small creatures along with all kinds of vegetation.

Chickens shouldn’t have potato skins.

Farm eggs have 1/3 less cholesterol,1/4 less saturated fat, 2/3 more vitamin A, Two times more omega-3 fatty acids and three times more vitamin E than store bought eggs.

You can tell if the egg is fertilized by there being a white “bullseye” on the yolk.

One egg can have as many as 17,000 pores on the shell.

The breed of the chicken will determine the color of the egg.

The yolks contain vitamin D.

Chickens run faster than humans.

They can also remember up too 100 faces.

Chicken math is real.

Rest in peace our little Cordon Bleu. I’m sorry I couldn’t figure out your sudden mystery illness in time.

New layer showing off for us this week! She’s from Featherbabyfarm’s BCM line. Oh the possibilities! I’m already dreaming of the egg color of her offspring with putting her under a homozygous blue roo or even our Olive Egger roo.

The chickens just got their daily ration of black soldier fly larvae & black oil sunflower seeds. It’s fun to listen to & watch them scratch & peck. Now that I’m working from home, I get to go say hi a few times a day!

This is Sausage our only Polish Chicken. She’s a gold laced polish. She’s a flighty, nervous little thing and very hard to get a picture of. It’s rainy out today so her hairdo is a little flatter than usual. She’s our resident troublemaker always the last one in the coop (usually after dark), or she’ll fly the fence to hangout with the neighbor’s goats and chickens.

Some of our flock as I opened their coop & run this morning. They’re always eager yo get out and free range for the day!
