Did you get a “teacup” pig for Christmas? 🐷🎄 Here’s everything you need to know!

First, “teacup” pigs are a myth. Pigs advertised as teacup, mico, or mini are not a special breed that stays small forever. These pigs can grow to be 100-200 pounds (or more!!!) when fully grown.

Unfortunately, many people are unaware of this and are unprepared for this commitment.

If you brought home a pig this Christmas, here’s how you can ensure their well-being:

1️⃣ Educate yourself - learn everything you can about their diets, medical and environmental needs. Pigs need a specialized diet, not food scraps or dog food. Find an experienced vet early on so you can get proper checkups, vaccinations and care.

2️⃣ Space, space, space - pigs need plenty of room to roam and root. They are not suited for indoors or dog cages.

3️⃣ Seek support - Join online pig owner communities or reach out to local sanctuaries like ours for advice and resources.

If you find yourself overwhelmed or unable to care for your pig, PLEASE do not abandon them. Contact a reputable sanctuary or rescue for help. We’re here to provide guidance and support for pigs in need!

Meet Kernel, one of our sulcata tortoises who joined Hogs and Kisses of Texas in September of 2021!

Sulcata tortoises, like Kernel, are often purchased as pets without understanding their long-term needs. They grow large, live for decades, and require a specialized environment to thrive.

Even in a safe place like our sanctuary, life can be a bit… topsy-turvy…. As you can see, Kernel had a bit of a mishap and ended up on his back. Don’t worry – he’s perfectly fine now! Show Kernel some love in the comments, and consider donating to support the care of all of our amazing animals. Together, we can give them the lives they deserve!!! 🐢

🐽 Sanctuary Spotlight 🐽

Say hello to Penelope, one of our residents here at Hogs and Kisses of Texas! December is a very special for Penelope, as she turns 8 years old this month 🎉

She was originally purchased as a piglet by a young couple. But when they found out they were expecting a baby, the responsibilities of both parenthood and caring for a pig quickly became overwhelming. Realizing they couldn’t give Penelope the life she deserved, they made the difficult decision to rehome her.

We gladly stepped in to give Penelope a forever home! Penelope has found her happy ending here, and we’re so grateful to celebrate her birthday as part of our sanctuary family.

🐷🎄 Welcome our first piggy guest Polly! Polly is spending her Christmas vacation with us, and she’s our very first guest for pig boarding! We couldn’t be more happy to have her here with our sanctuary family.

Polly’s family entrusted us to care for her while they travel, and we’re making sure she feels right at home. Our pig boarding service offers a safe and loving environment for pigs while their families are away - we make sure they get the same level of care they’d get at home!

Meet Bella!

Bella came to us after her previous owner, trying her best to follow advice, was feeding Bella very little dog food in hopes of keeping her small. Unfortunately, this is a common misconception tied to the “teacup pig” trend.

Because of this diet, Bella became malnourished and is smaller than she should be. While she’s getting the care she deserves now, her early diet could lead to health issues as she grows older.

Bella’s story is not unique and it is an important reminder that “teacup pigs” don’t stay mini forever!

Pigs Are Pets, Not Presents! 🐷🎁

The holidays are a time for joy, family, and giving – but some gifts come with more than meets the eye. Every year, we see adorable “teacup pigs” given as gifts, only for families to realize later that these pigs don’t stay tiny forever.

The truth? There is no such thing as a “teacup pig.” These little ones grow into full-sized pigs, often weighing over 150 pounds. They need specialized care, proper space, and a whole lot of love!

Here at Hogs and Kisses of Texas, we’ve seen too many pigs abandoned due to this misconception. Let’s break the cycle, here’s how:

🐽 Adopt, don’t impulse buy (we know, they’re cute!)
🐽 Educate others about the realities of so-called “teacup pigs”
🐽 Support sanctuaries like ours that provide a safe haven for pigs who’ve been let down
