Walter was a feral dog that had spent the last 8 months at the Sandoval County shelter. The very kind Cynthia from Sunflower Sanctuary Animal Rescue 🌻 agreed to take Walter to live out his life at her beautiful sanctuary. The shelter assured Cynthia that Walter wasn't a jumper and wouldn't jump the newly installed fence for his space. Upon arriving at the sanctuary it was discovered that Walter wasn't neutered and that Walter was a jumper. That very night Walter jumped the fence & was roaming a nearby property but made his was back to the sanctuary property where Cynthia was able to corral him back into his space. Walter continued that routine for the rest of the week. Cynthia would find him early morning out of his space and would lure him back into his space where he would eat, drink & rest from his nightly adventures. Cynthia immediately reached out to us and we advised to continue feeding him in his space & ignore him. Walter would need to be trapped to be taken to the Vet to get neutered. Last Saturday we went out to assess. We put up the missy trap in Walter's space as he watched us. Once it was up Cynthia put his food & water in and he went in to eat and drink as we watched. The next day, Sunday, we went back out with the 6ft box trap to see how Walter would take to conditioning. Cynthia put his food in and he went in to eat with very little hesitation. We enforced the spot we thought Walter was getting out from & put up cameras to watch for the night. Walter didn't leave his spot that night. Confident, we scheduled his trapping for Monday morning so he can be taken straight to the Vet for his neuter. It went as expected. It was textbook. The trap was armed with the remote, Cynthia put his food in as Walter watched & once she left he followed his nose in for the goodnes and the remote was pressed. Whew. Walter has been at the Vet all week hopefully decompressing and will be taken back to the beautiful sanctuary to live the life he deserves. Please send Walter pawsitive vibes and please send Sanctuary Mama loving caring thoughts. Thank you Cynthia for giving Walter a chance πŸ™

Day 2: Conditioning 101 (Sunday)
Since Walter didn't budge with the missy trap conditioning, we thought we would try the 6ft box trap conditioning. We were told he'd been trapped before so we weren't going to know how that would go until we knew. It's a whole process to crate dogs inside the missy trap so the less trauma Walter had to endure the better. Within minutes of putting down the box trap with the door tied open & baited, Walter sniffed & circled a couple times, went in for the goodness and went back to sniff πŸ˜†

Day 1: Conditioning 101 (Saturday)
We weren't sure how much conditioning Walter would require so we set up the missy trap and it didn't even phase him 🐾

Meet Midnight 🧑
The third of the Napi tail wagging trio we are show casing. Midnight is also about 1 1/2 years old, same as Noche. We guess they're from the same litter & Coal is for a more recent litter. Midnight weighs about 50 pounds and is smaller in stature. Midnight gets along with cats & other dogs, he is house, kennel & doggy door trained. Like the rest of the trio, Midnight is thriving with his new life. These dogs are such love bugs and are eager to love. We're so proud of them πŸ₯Ή All thanks to Fur-get Me Not Canine Rescue. Where are our black dog lovers πŸ–€ If you are interested in meeting sweet Midnight call or text 505-382-9205 🐾

πŸ’₯ Mama Napi Pupdate πŸ’₯
Remember the very pregnant mama we recovered on the Napi Reservation near Farmington last month? We recovered her on 1/19/25 and she left to a certified welping foster in Colorado on 1/21/25. In the early morning on 1/25/25 when we were heading back out to recover the rest of the pack Mama Napi had 9 puppies! Unfortunately 4 puppies didn't make it πŸ₯Ή Probably due to her poor prenatal care but Mama Napi is doing amazing in foster & her remaining 5 puppies are hanging tough. We also got word that the foster is adopting Mama Napi! We're so proud of her! Welcome home Mama Napi πŸ™

WHEW 🐾
Sunday morning we saw a post about 2 dogs that were roaming in an industrial area in Albuquerque. We went out that morning to look for the railroad track duo & didn't see them but we were able to make contact with a business owner nearby. He said the dogs had just showed up there over a week ago and showed us the abandoned mattress they sleep on near old railroad tracks. The business owner said animal control had been out there a few days prior & couldn't get them. They wouldn't leave a trap because they were worried about the frigid temps at night & the dogs possibly being in the trap all night. Which leads us to a very important message. We never leave traps unattended, even with a camera watching. If we don't have eyes in our target, we don't leave a trap set. Ever. No hail Mary's. Plus, with trip plate traps that AC uses there's a good chance both dogs wouldn't have been secured together. The little female probably didn't weigh enough to trip it anyway. Upon assessing the situation we knew our strategy we just needed to get eyes on the duo. We went out Sunday evening to leave food & a camera and there they were, huddled on the abandoned mattress. They were super friendly just scared. The business owner said animal control was supposed to go out again sometime this week so we knew we had to act fast because we didn't want them pursued out of the area or them getting one & not the other. Monday we went out to replenish food & there they were, huddled on the abandoned mattress. Typical dumped dog behavior, loyally waiting where they were left. Our volunteer was able to earn a little bit of trust by sitting in the ground with them. When the little female was done barking, she climbed up on her lap. The male was curious just wasn't sure. She spent about half hour with them until she had to get to work. We didn't want to grab one without the other & didn't want to pursue the male too hard. We went back out that evening after work to set up for them. They weren't around so we waited. The little female finally showed up & ate all the goodness in the trap. About 20 min later the male showed up. He went in the trap for any scraps he could find. We replenished a little bit of goodness for him & he went in for it. By this time it was dark so we called it & went back before sunrise. We tied the trap door open & watched on camera throughout the night as they both entered the trap several times, so we were confident with fresh goodness we could secure them both. In between all this we were networking them so they had a place to go. When we arrived onsite early yesterday morning, there they were, huddled on the mattress. By the time we replenished the goodness & walked away they made their way off the mattress into the trap and our volunteer still made it to work by 7:30am!! Whew. We scanned them for a microchip which they didn't have. Thank you everybody that helped us network this sweet duo. Thank you Argos, A Shelter Dog Rescue for taking them and thank you Good Shepherd Veterinary Hospital for assessing the intake. Another amazing experience collaborating with amazing people πŸ™

We were up with the chickens this morning getting the railroad track duo. After observing them Sunday & yesterday we were confident we could get them both at once with our big box trap armed with the remote control. We set out the trap yesterday afternoon & watched them for a few hours go in the trap individually but never fully in together. Last night we left some irresistible goodness in the back of the trap, tied the door open and watched them on camera go in together to eat without hesitation. We arrived onsite early this morning because we knew they sleep on an abandoned mattress nearby. They recognized us from the day before & waited for us to replenish the goodness. It only took a few seconds for them to get up off the mattress & follow their noses in that's why we weren't fast enough to start the video sooner of them making their way in πŸ˜† Once they were both all the way in we used the remote to shut the trap door. Whew. Welcome to safety little ones πŸ™ A more detailed post of this duo to come.

We don't always have time to physically make posters and put them up but that's the first thing we advise when we're contacted about a lost pet. Another successful case due to poster generated sighting. We don't find 8.5 Γ— 11 flyers as effective as half sheet neon posters. Nice work Jennifer Clark Welcome home Maggie πŸ™
