Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society Saving lives, giving compassionate care & finding forever homes for thousands of animals since 1987.

The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: SPARKY – We rescued Sparky after she was found as a stray underneath a house in Sylva. This gorgeous 3-year-old tuxedo cat is quite the social butterfly at the CHHS Feline Adoption Center, eagerly greeting visitors and “talking up a storm” when she receives attention and affection, and she especially enjoys being brushed. Sparky gets along with all the other kitty cats but she is also equally content to spend quiet time on one of our spacious porches.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Sparky is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give this pretty kitty a lifetime forever home or a temporary foster home, please click on the application links below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: SLEEPY – Last January, CHHS received a call for help about seven Hound mix puppies in Tuckasegee who were born the previous November and were (at the time) eight weeks old. The litter was unexpected, we were told. 🤦‍♀️ We didn’t have much room at the first of 2024, but we made space to take the pups in, on the condition that the owner allow us to spay the mom, which we offered to do for free.

When the seven puppies arrived, our compassionate and creative staff just could not resist the temptation of naming them after the seven dwarfs. Five of the “dwarf doggies” have since been adopted, and the remaining two are still looking for their forever homes. Sleepy is one of those two. Sleepy does sleep at night. But that’s about it. 😆 He’s a one-year-old hound dog, after all. True to his breed mix and young age, this sweet dog is very energetic and loves to go for brisk walks and jogs, and he is a favorite of our awesome dog-walking volunteers. ❤

Sleepy gets along with absolutely everyone, whether two-legged or four-legged. He adores playing with toys and he is very treat motivated. Sleepy would make the perfect canine companion for someone who lives an active lifestyle. This is an affectionate pup who will give you a lifetime of joy and companionship. Sleepy’s adoption includes already being neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give this happy pup a forever home, please click the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: LINDY – Lindy is a gorgeous 3-year-old female Labrador Retriever mix who arrived at our no-kill shelter last February after she was found as a stray in Glenville. She loves every human she meets but as much as she adores being the center of attention and affection, Lindy would thrive best in a forever home where she can be the only dog. Lindy knows some basic commands and she is completely housetrained. She adores going on hikes and would make the perfect adventure partner for someone with an active lifestyle.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Lindy is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give Lindy a permanent forever home or a temporary foster home, please click the links below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: MIDNIGHT – Two-year-old Midnight is absolutely beautiful and she loves the company of other cats and kittens. She’s just a wee bit timid around humans but we have discovered her love for play, especially with lasers and wand toys, helps her to come out of her shell. As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Midnight is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: CLYDE – Long-term resident Clyde arrived at our no-kill shelter after he was found as a stray in Franklin. He is a handsome male Mountain Cur mix and we estimate that he is about five years old. What we don’t have to estimate is Clyde’s capacity for affection. He loves every human he meets. This handsome pup loves going for walks and his ideal forever family would be one that lives an active lifestyle. As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Clyde is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give Clyde a forever home, or to temporarily foster this sweet dog, please click on the application links below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: PERLA – The Good Samaritan who found Perla (along with her sister Blossom) on the side of the road in Highlands last February brought these two kittens to our no-kill shelter for safe refuge from the cold. Almost a year later, 16-month-old Perla is still very much enjoying safe refuge from the cold in the warmth of her cageless playroom at the CHHS Feline Adoption Center. Perla is a sweetheart and she adores gentle affection and attention but she’s not a “clingy cat” who will be constantly begging for it.

We currently have a “BOLO” adoption special – adopt one cat or kitten, and we will waive the adoption fee for the second kitty. (Blossom, perhaps?) 💕 Perla’s adoption includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give beautiful Perla a loving forever home, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

💥 BREAKING NEWS, WE HAVE! 💥

Our longest resident canine has found his forever home! Yoda has been in our compassionate care since July… 2022! 😮 But a great deal of that time was spent with our Super Foster Mom Melissa! After 925 days of compassionate care split between our no-kill shelter and Melissa’s foster home 🥰 Yoda met his new forever mom Virginia, and Melissa was there to help with the adoption! Yoda now has a loving forever home in Hendersonville, and Melissa has told us she’ll be ready soon to foster another long-term shelter dog. 😍

THANK YOU to CHHS Adopting Angel Virginia, and THANK YOU to CHHS Foster Mom Melissa! 💝

CHHS never gives up on the animals entrusted to our care. No matter how long, and no matter how challenging the circumstances. As another Yoda once said: “Do or do not. There is no try.” ✨

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: WILLA – Willa is five years old and she is a quiet cat who mostly keeps to herself, but she is very loving and cuddly when you want to give her attention and affection. She adores the company of other felines and it just so happens that we have a “BOGO” cat adoption special, so if you adopt one furry feline, we will waive the adoption fee for a second kitten or adult cat. As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Willa is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give Willa a new home for the New Year, please click on the application link below or call 828-743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT – TY-TY: This very sweet dog is four years old and he has come a long way while in our care. Ty-Ty still can be a little standoffish around strangers, especially men, but with just a little time and some quiet attention, this pup becomes super affectionate. He has already stolen the hearts of our staff and he is a favorite among our awesome dog walking volunteers. ❤️

Ty-Ty is housetrained, walks well on a leash and is very treat motivated. As a longer term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Ty-Ty is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: BLOSSOM – The cold temperature this morning is similar to one last February when two little kittens arrived at CHHS. The low temperature was 34 degrees on that February day when Blossom and her sister were found on the side of the road in Highlands. Both kittens were brought to our no-kill shelter for safe refuge from the cold. Now one year old, Blossom has been a joy to care for. She is sweet, laid back, and she loves affection. Blossom loves other cats and kittens and is an excellent candidate for our feline “BOLO” adoption special – adopt one cat or kitten, and we will waive the adoption fee for the second kitty. 💕

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Blossom is only $50, which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To adopt this beautiful blossom picked from the cold, please click on the application link below or call 828-743-5752 for more information.

Meet Moose! Moose is a sweet and handsome four-year-old male Labrador Retriever mix. Moose is looking for a family that lives an active lifestyle and who can give him plenty of mental and physical stimulation, along with lots of opportunities for exercise and play. Moose is just bursting with the need to give affection, and he clearly loves people. Moose gets along with most dogs, but we recommend bringing your current canine for a meet-and-greet at the shelter before adoption.

Moose’s adoption includes already being neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give this handsome pup a new home for the New Year, please click on the application link below or call 828-743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: IVAN – Four-year-old Ivan is one of our longest-term resident felines. Ivan is very sweet but a little on the shy side so he tends to get overlooked in our cageless playrooms in favor of the more extroverted kitties who run to greet visitors the moment they walk in the door. Ivan gets along great with other cats and he doesn’t seem to mind dogs, either. He just needs the companionship of a patient and gentle human who will give Ivan time, space and plenty of love and affection.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Ivan is only $50, which includes already being neutered, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag.
