The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

🐕 HERO PET HAPPY TAILS! 🐕 We rescued Opie (pictured at left) in January when he and his six siblings were just eight weeks old and were a litter of “unexpected” puppies in Tuckasegee. DJ wanted to wait until he met just the right family, and he hit the doggy jackpot with this beautiful loving family from Hendersonville. Hazel is a fun-loving, highly energetic dog who is eager to please. She would make a great canine companion for another dog who has lots of vim and vigor, and a great hiking buddy for a family who lives an active lifestyle. HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: ALLAN – In September 2023 three stray kittens were found in Highlands and brought to our no-kill shelter. At the time, they were approximately eight weeks old. This is Allan, who we rescued along with his brothers Edgar and Poe. 🐦‍⬛ They are now 16 months old. Allan is a little on the timid side and his ideal human companion would be one with a gentle, patient touch. As a youngster, Allan is still quite curious and playful but he has outgrown the “climbing the curtains” kitty stage. 🤪 Allan absolutely loves other cats which makes him a perfectly suited candidate for our feline adoption “BOGO” special – adopt one cat or kitten and we will waive the adoption fee for the second kitty (Poe perhaps? Edgar has since found his forever home.)

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: DAISY – Daisy is a female 1-year-old Labrador Retriever mix. She is sweet, beautiful and an absolute joy to be around. As most Lab owners will attest to, this breed stays in “puppy mode” throughout adulthood, so her human adopter needs to be ready for a lifetime of exercise, activity and adventure. Daisy is treat motivated and has a good working knowledge of basic commands. Her ideal forever home would be one that already has another canine companion or two, but no cats.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: LIAM – Liam does, indeed, have a very particular set of skills. Those skills include snuggling on the couch. Watching television with his humans. Liking cats and not minding dogs. No, those aren’t the skills of Liam Neeson the movie star. Those are the skills of Liam the CHHS shelter cat.

We know Liam has those skills because he spent some time with one of our awesome foster parents. There are so many reasons why we love our foster parents, especially because of the space it frees up at our no-kill shelter to rescue another animal in need. But we also love our fosters because these amazing folks give us important insight into the behavior of a shelter pet in a home environment. Because most of our rescued pets are former strays, like Liam, we don’t have any information about their household temperament.

It was through Liam’s foster parents that we learned about his love for couch snuggling and television watching. Liam is a 3-year-old handsome grey kitty who we originally rescued last year after he was found as a stray in Highlands. He is a complete and total sweetheart. Liam seems to be happy around other animals but he is equally content being the only four-legged member of the home.
