Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society Saving lives, giving compassionate care & finding forever homes for thousands of animals since 1987.

The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

💥 BREAKING NEWS! 💥

💖 CHHS to Open Veterinary Clinic in 2027 💖
➡️ Open to the Public 5 Days a Week

The Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society has announced plans to build and open a new veterinary clinic that will serve publicly-owned pets as well as shelter animals.

The new veterinary clinic will be built and located between the current CHHS Canine Adoption Center and CHHS Feline Adoption Center on the humane society’s 10-acre campus at 200 Gable Drive in Sapphire. The clinic will be open to the public five days a week providing examinations, x-rays, lab tests, surgeries, dentals, pharmaceuticals and preventatives, and more.

“This new veterinary clinic is the missing piece of the puzzle,” says CHHS Executive Director David Stroud. “With the support of this great animal-loving community, we have done amazing lifesaving work for the animals. Since our founding in 1987, our no-kill shelter has rescued thousands of strays and owner-surrendered pets, cared for them as if they were our very own, and we found each one a new loving, forever home.

“But having an onsite veterinary clinic that not only cares for shelter pets but also public pets fills the gap to complete our lifesaving mission for local animals and the people who love them.”

💖 NO GREATER EXAMPLE OF UNCONDITIONAL LOVE 💖

We recently heard from CHHS Adopting Angel Kelsey and we were moved to tears with Kelsey’s story and pictures that she shared of her life and adventures with an amazing hound dog from Cashiers… to Central Park! 💖

“Back in May 2017, I adopted a dog from your shelter. His name at the time was Charlie Brown, and he was renamed Boone (yes, I did graduate from App State). Sadly, Boone passed away in April of this year. I had Boonie for 8 beautiful, transformative years.

“The first few months I had Boone, to say he was aloof would be an understatement. It took about six months for him to come out of his shell and start to show me who he was. Boonie was truly unlike any dog I have ever met. He never barked. Instead, he would communicate through moans, groans, heavy sighs, side-eye, or my personal favorite, standing directly in front of you and staring at you. He was incredibly calm in every situation. He would sit patiently while I gave him a bath, despite hating water. Even our vet here described him as "a perfect gentleman." Every person, dog, and even cats, who met Boone immediately loved him. Frequently, Boone would befriend a dog that "didn't like other dogs", but of course they loved Boone (he did have a thing for Standard Poodles).

“When I decided to take a huge leap and move to New York City, I was so worried about how Boone would adapt to life in the city. Of course, he had no problem at all. He loved all the smells, chasing pigeons, and all the different dog friends he got to meet out on the street.

“No matter what was going on in my life - moving, changing jobs, breakups, a pandemic - Boone was always calm, forcing me to keep steady. All he wanted was his cozy blankets and pillows, cuddles, and a bit of my pizza crust. He taught me so much about love, patience, and acceptance.

“When I tell people that Boonie was at the shelter for over two years, they typically respond feeling heartbroken for poor Boonie. But I always reply that he was so well-loved and cared for. He had a nice outdoor run, he went on hikes, and so many people loved him before me.

“I just wanted to say thank you for Boonie. He changed my life and changed me as a person. I attached a few pictures from our time together, including my wedding in Central Park.”

Best,
Kelsey

‼️The long awaited update so many have been waiting for! ‼️

Brianna has been found, caught, and is safe and sound at CHHS ❤️❤️❤️ she seems thin but overall healthy and uninjured!

Our heartfelt thanks to EVERYONE who helped aid in a safe return. All the check-ins, sighting reports, and hours many individuals spent searching, leaving out food and checking traps is just a reminder of the wonderful caring community we live in!

From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU!

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: LULU – Lulu was found wandering as a stray in Sylva and we estimate that she is about 5 years old. In the first few minutes of meeting someone new, Lulu might seem a tad shy but don’t be fooled by first impressions. Lulu enjoys attention and affection from humans. It’s just that she needs a little bit of time to warm up to folks she doesn’t know. Lulu completely enjoys the company of other cats and kittens and she would thrive in a forever home that already has another feline or two. Sooooo… it just so happens that we have a “BOGO” cat adoption special… if you adopt one furry feline, we will waive the adoption fee for a second kitten or adult cat. 💕

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Lulu is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. To give beautiful Lulu a forever home, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: MEATBALL – Meatball was just a few weeks old when he, his brother Alfredo and sister Cannoli, were found under a porch in Cullowhee last summer. Our Italian-inspired resident Meatball has a hint of “spice” in his demeanor, but for the most part Meatball is on the shy side. Meatball just recently celebrated his first birthday, he is playful, affectionate, and loves the company of other cats and kittens. So just as meatball goes with spaghetti, our beloved Meatball needs to have feline companionship. Which leads to a reminder about our BOGO cat adoption special — adopt one furry feline, and we will waive the adoption fee for a second kitten or adult cat. 😻😻

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Meatball is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. To give this shy, spicy kitty a forever home, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: SLEEPY – When a litter of seven Hound mix puppies from Tuckasegee arrived last year, our compassionate and creative staff just could not resist the temptation of naming them after the seven dwarfs. Five of the “dwarf doggies” have since been adopted, and the remaining two are still looking for their forever homes. Sleepy is one of those two. Sleepy does sleep at night. But that’s about it. 😆 He’s an 18-month-old hound dog, after all. True to his breed mix and young age, this sweet dog is very energetic and loves to go for brisk walks and jogs, and he is a favorite of our awesome dog-walking volunteers. ❤

Sleepy gets along with absolutely everyone, whether two-legged or four-legged. He adores playing with toys and he is very treat motivated. Sleepy would make the perfect canine companion for someone who lives an active lifestyle. This is a fun, friendly, affectionate pup who will give you a lifetime of joy and companionship. Sleepy’s adoption includes already being neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, a free starter bag of food, a free ID tag, and a free after-adoption training lesson with our professional dog trainer.

To give this happy pup a forever home, please click the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: POE – In September 2023 three stray kittens were found in Highlands and brought to our no-kill shelter. At the time, they were approximately eight weeks old. This is Poe, who we rescued along with his brothers Edgar and Allan. 🐦‍⬛ He is just a month away from his second birthday. Poe is a little on the timid side and his ideal human companion would be one with a gentle, patient touch. As a youngster, Poe is still quite curious and playful but he has outgrown the “climbing the curtains” kitty stage. 🤪 Poe absolutely loves other cats and he also enjoys being around small dogs.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Poe is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccinations. To give this sweet kitty a forever home, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.
