The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

Meet sweet and friendly Lysa, a gorgeous 2-year-old female Calico who arrived in May after she was found as a stray in Glenville. Lysa loves to lounge around but she has a playful streak as well. She loves all people and she warms up to other cats fairly quickly, and she also likes small dogs. We believe that Lysa would thrive in just about any type of cat-loving household.

Lysa’s adoption includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. We also currently have a “BOGO” cat adoption special, so if you adopt one furry feline, we will waive the adoption fee for a second kitten or adult cat. We have more than 80 🙀 other feline friends to choose from should you wish to bring two cats home instead of one. 💕

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: CLYDE – Why in the world is this sweet, loving dog still here? 🤷‍♀️ Clyde is wondering the same thing!

Long-term resident Clyde arrived at our no-kill shelter after he was found as a stray in Franklin. He is a male Mountain Cur mix and we estimate that he is about six years old. What we don’t have to estimate is Clyde’s capacity for affection. He loves every human he meets. This handsome pup loves going for walks and his ideal forever family would be one that lives an active lifestyle.

🫶Just a feel good story for your Tuesday!🫶

Some of you may remember, back in January of 2016, our CHHS team rescued several dogs from Natchez, Mississippi due to flooding in their shelter. One of those dogs was known as "Nos." Now called "Boss." 🫡 Well, his mom and dad sent us the update below (Photos 1 & 2) a couple of days after taking him home and have kept in touch with us over the years to let us know he is the perfect boy. On their way to Highlands today to celebrate their 63rd wedding anniversary, they stopped in to say hello and The Boss was in attendance! 🥰Nine years later and a lot more white hairs of wisdom on his sweet face, he is still the perfect boy! What a treat to get to see him! This is why we love what we do!

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: JASMINE – Beautiful 2-year-old Jasmine arrived at CHHS along with her four kittens last December after they were found as strays by a local Good Samaritan. Jasmine is sweet, gentle, quiet and reserved, and she loves the company of other cats and kittens. She doesn’t go out of her way to seek attention although she does appreciate affection when it's given to her. Jasmine would be wonderful in a home with someone who wants an independent kitty but one that will also come sit on the couch and enjoy quiet moments together.

HERO PET SPOTLIGHT – TY-TY: This very sweet dog is five years old and he has come a long way while in our care. Ty-Ty can be a little standoffish around strangers, especially men, but with just a little time and some quiet attention, this handsome boy becomes super affectionate. While he can take some time to come around to humans, Ty-Ty wastes no time adjusting to other dogs and does great with any pup he is paired with in our outdoor play yards.

Ty-Ty is housetrained, walks well on a leash and is very treat motivated. HERO PET SPOTLIGHT: JOLLY – We always strive to be completely truthful when describing our shelter pets. At the same time, we also always strive to emphasize the most positive attributes our adoptable cats and dogs have.

So here is Jolly. She is one year old and she is beautiful.

Thank you for your attention to this matter. 😐

Well, okay. We can provide a little bit more information than that. CHHS staff gives loving compassionate care to our 100+ shelter pets each and every day. They were asked about their thoughts and comments about Jolly. Here was one:

“Will sit still for forced affection but never approaches first. Loves other cats. Very pretty with her unique, almost perfect mustache. At least she has her looks going for her.” 🤔

Uh oh. Here was another:

“Would be a great companion for another cat. May not ever be a lap cat.”

Okay, this isn’t so bad. We can work with this somehow and make a positive impression. Until another staff member added…

“The Syringe Snapper. Jolly would realistically do best in a home with nothing sharp and plenty of other cats. And plenty of fuzzy cat beds. The only thing she likes are small white dogs, other cats, and the blood of her enemies.” 🙀

Yikes. That last comment might be a tad dramatic, but there you have it.

Beautiful Jolly is looking for a forever home with other cats in the household. A human will be required for meal preparation and litter box cleaning. 😍 Jolly is not for everyone, and certainly not for a family who wants a non-stop cuddle bug and lap cat. But there are folks who appreciate and love felines with a bit of... ahem… “attitude”… 😸 and if you are one of those brave souls, we invite you to come meet Jolly.

We’ll even supply the gloves. 😻
