Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society

Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society Saving lives, giving compassionate care & finding forever homes for thousands of animals since 1987.

The mission of the Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society is to provide a caring and compassionate home for the animals in our care until we find them a forever home. On any given day, we may have up to nearly 100 dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens in our nonprofit, no kill shelter. Our shelter is tucked away on 10 rolling acres in the Blue Ridge Mountains, surrounded by the natural beauty of scenic fore

sts, mountains, waterfalls, rivers, and lakes. The dogs and puppies romp and run in spacious outdoor play yards during the day. In the evening, they are all brought indoors to sleep in their own kennel, on their own bed, with biscuits, toys and soothing music. The cats and kittens are free to play and interact in cage-less community cat rooms – each with a screened porch and large windows. Their lives are enriched with toys and daily socialization by staff and visitors alike. We welcome visitors to our shelter Tuesday through Saturday from 10:00am to 4:00pm. Through your support, we can maintain a high quality of care and high adoption rates for our dogs, puppies, cats, and kittens.

⭐️ The New CHHS Veterinary Clinic
⭐️ Open to the Public 5 Days a Week*
⭐️ Breaking Ground in Spring 2026!

The Cashiers-Highlands Humane Society has announced plans to build and open a new veterinary clinic that will serve publicly-owned pets as well as shelter animals. The two-story CHHS Veterinary Clinic will feature a 2,280 sq. ft. clinic on the main parking lot level, with two exam rooms, a main treatment and dental area with a lab and pharmacy, a surgical suite, a room for pre- and post-op recovery, x-ray room and isolation area. The lower level of the building is a 2,280 sq. ft. two-bedroom two-bath apartment for the veterinarian to live onsite.

The new veterinary clinic will be built and located between the current CHHS Canine Adoption Center and CHHS Feline Adoption Center on the humane society’s 10-acre campus at 200 Gable Drive in Sapphire. The clinic will be open to the public five days a week* providing examinations, x-rays, lab tests, surgeries, dentals, pharmaceuticals and preventatives, and more.

⭐️ *Once the clinic is established and when it becomes feasible, our goal will be to also offer after-hours emergency care.

Groundbreaking for the new CHHS Veterinary Clinic will take place in Spring 2026 with a projected Grand Opening on the Humane Society’s 40th anniversary in Summer 2027. The estimated construction cost of the clinic is $2.5 million.

All of us at CHHS hope you had a “Jolly Christmas”, but in case it wasn’t a “Holly” Jolly Christmas, then we have what you were missing! Meet Holly! 🎅 Holly arrived at our no-kill shelter last month after she was found as a stray in Cashiers. Holly is indeed a jolly soul, one of the happiest dogs we have ever had the pleasure of caring for. She loves everyone she meets, and she adores playtime and going on new adventures.

Holly is 3 years old, spayed, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, and her adoption also comes with a free starter bag of food, a free ID tag, and a free after-adoption training session with our professional dog trainer.

To give sweet Holly a new home for the New Year, please click on the application link below or call 828-743-5752 for more information.

💖 HERO PET HAPPY TAILS! 💖 (And this story is EXTRA HAPPY!) 😍

In January 2024 we rescued a litter of seven hound puppies in Tuckasegee and we couldn’t help but name them after the Seven Dwarfs. Up until now, 5 of the 7 “dwarf doggies” have found their forever homes.

Make that 6.

After 701 days of compassionate care at our no-kill shelter, our sweet, beautiful Happy has an awesome new family and a loving forever home in Waynesville! ❤️ Happy Tails, Happy, and enjoy the best-ever head start on a Happy New Year! 💝

✨HERO PET SPOTLIGHT✨ JASMINE – Beautiful 3-year-old Jasmine arrived at CHHS along with her four kittens last December after they were found as strays by a local Good Samaritan. Jasmine is sweet, gentle, quiet and reserved, and she loves the company of other cats and kittens. She doesn’t go out of her way to seek attention although she does appreciate affection when it's given to her. Jasmine would be wonderful in a home with someone who wants an independent kitty but one that will also come sit on the couch and enjoy quiet moments together.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Jasmine is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. We also currently have a “BOGO” cat adoption special, so if you adopt one furry feline, we will waive the adoption fee for a second kitten or adult cat. We have more than 70 🙀 other feline friends to choose from should you wish to bring two cats home instead of one. 💕

To give Jasmine (and another kitty 😻) a new home for the New Year, please click on the application link below or call (828)743-5752 for more information.

Thank you to every elf who purchased, delivered, and mailed gifts, and help spread the word! None of this would have been possible without your generosity. Also huge thank you to our location sponsors Paws on the Mountain Cashiers Valley Pharmacy Animal Wellness Hospital of Highlands and Highlands Mountain Paws! ✨HERO PET SPOTLIGHT✨ TY-TY: This very sweet dog is five years old and he has come a long way while in our care. Ty-Ty can be a little standoffish around strangers, especially men, but with just a little time and some quiet attention, this handsome boy becomes super affectionate. While he can take some time to come around to humans, Ty-Ty wastes no time adjusting to other dogs and does great with any pup he is paired with in our outdoor play yards.

Ty-Ty is housetrained, walks well on a leash and is very treat motivated. As a longer term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Ty-Ty is only $50 which includes already being neutered, microchipped, up-to-date on vaccinations and flea/heartworm preventative, a free starter bag of food, a free ID tag, and a free after-adoption training session with our professional dog trainer.

To give this awesome dog a home for the holidays (and forever after that), please click on the application link below or call 828-743-5752 for more information.

✨HERO PET SPOTLIGHT✨ JOLLY – One-year-old Jolly is looking for a forever home with other felines in the household. She loves other cats and kittens, and will sit still for attention from humans but she likes her “alone time” probably more than being a lap cat. We know there are some folks out there who like their feline companion to have a little bit of “catitude” 😻 and if that’s you, then gorgeous Jolly is your girl.

As a longer-term resident CHHS Hero Pet, the adoption fee for Jolly is only $50 which includes already being spayed, microchipped, up to date on vaccinations, and tested negative for FeLV, FIV and heartworms, a free starter bag of food, and a free ID tag. We also currently have a “BOGO” cat adoption special, so if you adopt one furry feline, we will waive the adoption fee for a second kitten or adult cat. We have 70 other feline friends to choose from should you wish to bring two cats home instead of one. 💕
