☀️EXTREME HEAT ALERT☀️

Extreme high temperatures are expected this week in Oklahoma. Please make sure you take the proper precautions to protect pets and livestock.

▪️ Keep pets indoors and limit exercise.
▪️ Provide access to shade and fresh, clean, cool water when outside.
▪️ Watch for signs of heat stroke (heavy panting, racing heart, stumbling, weakness, vomiting, diarrhea, seizing, etc.) and take your pet to a veterinarian immediately if symptoms occur.
▪️ Keep pets off of hot sidewalks, driveways, and pavement.
▪️ Don't leave pets in a hot car for ANY amount of time.
▪️ If you're hot, they're hot. Keep them cool! Even short bursts of air-conditioning will help them stay comfortable.

If you see an animal in distress and suffering in the heat, report it to your local animal control or law enforcement agency. OAA and Unchain OK volunteers are responding to as many calls/texts/emails/messages as we can.

If you're in a position to offer help to a pet or pet owner, OAA can support you with supplies and advice. The more people helping, the better!

Distemper is one of several vaccines that Dr Dougherty recommends every K9 get boostered annually. Check your pets records...if they are needing Dhpp, give us a call to schedule an appt, 918-227-0133.

City of Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW) staff is taking proactive measures to stop the spread of canine distemper virus (CDV) following confirmation of several recent cases.

TAW will be closed indefinitely while it works to treat animals and prevent further spread.

During this time, TAW will continue with:

Emergency animal control and bite case investigations
Return to owner services, following proper sanitation protocols
TAW Operations

All dogs adopted from TAW have been vaccinated for CDV, but the vaccine is not immediately effective. Adopters should follow up with their personal veterinarian to receive any necessary boosters.

Effective immediately, TAW will have the following safety protocols in place:

Identify and isolate infected animals
Carefully monitor healthy but exposed animals for future symptoms
Ensure no animals are placed into the community until they are without symptoms or past the incubation period
Conduct a deep cleaning to reduce further contamination
About Canine Distemper
CDV is a very serious and sometimes fatal viral illness that affects dogs and other members of the Canidae family. It also affects ferrets. The illness can strike a dog at any age, but young, unvaccinated dogs and puppies are most susceptible. The virus is found in bodily secretions and spread via inhalation. Once inhaled, the virus can move to the lymph nodes and then to the blood, spreading to the respiratory, gastrointestinal, urogenital and central nervous systems.

Despite its seriousness, many dogs are subclinical or only mildly affected.

The City asks dog owners to ensure their dogs are up to date on the CDV vaccine, as it is recognized as one of the most effective vaccines. For more information on CDV and supportive care, visit https://www.avma.org/resources/pet-owners/petcare/canine-distemper.
