This sweet little bean is doing puppy lessons with me. She has the most dedicated owner who just wants to make sure he’s got her started off on the right foot 🤍
Getting a puppy can feel incredibly overwhelming- there is so, so much conflicting information out there. I’m so excited to be helping these 2 get the best start they possibly can 🥹🤍

And last but not least, welcome Annie to The Home Grown Dog family- my final arrival of 2023!✨

Annie is a 3ish year old Poodle and she will be with me for 3 weeks.
Annie struggles with a lot of fear, nervousness and anxiety with a variety of things. Her owners biggest goals are to have a happier dog (🥹) that they can take on walks without fear of being pulled to the ground.
Looking forward to helping this girl and her family feel better, understand each other better and build a stronger relationship 🤍

Welcome Oliver to The Home Grown Dog family!✨
This wild little man is a 6 month old Cocker Spaniel and he will be with me for 2 weeks!
Oliver is a sweet boy but has a lot of wild puppy energy that mom and dad want to channel into better behavior. Their goal is to be able to bring him to their restaurant and travel with him! His biggest struggle is over-excitement around other people and dogs when he’s outside of his home.

Excited to be working with this guy and his owners to get started on their goals!🙌🏼

Welcome Bonnie to The Home Grown Dog family!✨

This sweet girl is just over a year old and she’s a St. Bernard x Poodle mix. She will be with me for 3 weeks working on some overall manners, but most importantly working on doorway manners and respecting an open door. She has bolted out the door a few times and likes to play “catch me!”, so I’ll also be working on building a recall for her too.

She is sweet as can be and has been loving her training so far!
Happy to have ya here girlfriend 🥰🫶🏼

He’s here for a 2 week puppy program and then will come back in January for a 2 week adult program- so he’s getting a great start with training!🙌🏼

Welcome Ellie to The Home Grown Dog family!✨

Ellie is a 7 year old Jack Russel who is doing some lessons with us to sharpen up some manners in the home. She is a sweet, spunky girl, but mom and dad are about to welcome a new baby and they wanted help adding more structure to their home with Ellie.

Our goals are
*Walking nicely on a leash
*No jumping/ par-coring off guests
*No barking at the doorbell/rushing the front door

We had an awesome start today! Excited for this awesome family 🥰

This is a VERY common question/request from owners, but it’s a very multifaceted answer- how very “dog trainer-y” of me to say, I know 🫠

These few listed answers are good starting points, but other things like your dog’s genetics, how you’re fulfilling them on a daily basis, how you live with them in your home, even nutrition can play a factor in your dog settling down.

This can take timeeeee to pattern. Some dogs pick it up or are genetically more built for it, and others may struggle with it.
✔️ Practicing calm in the house/play time outside
✔️ Practice the art of doing nothing in a bunch of places! Parks, driveway, parking lot, Home Depot!
✔️ Balance your dogs free time with structured time properly
✔️ Reach out to a trainer if you need help!🤌🏼

This handsome boy is a 5(ish) year old Australian Shepherd mix. He’s here for our 3 Week Board + Train program to work on reactivity and overall manners in the home. Our biggest “to do” is working on new people coming into the home and changing his outlook and response to that. He’s a really sweet boy under all those feelings!

Welcome to The Home Grown Dog family Mochi!✨

Mochi is here for a 3 week puppy program, and I will be working on ALLLL things confidence building with this sweet boy!
He is a timid guy and has a little bit of trouble adapting to things that are scary or new. My plan is to build up his food drive, independent play and engagement with me, then utilizing that to make new things FUN for him instead of scary!

He has already made big strides towards our goals and he is such a goofy boy. Welcome bud!

This little ball of fluff is here for 3 weeks to work on potty training and overall manners. She is sassy and opinionated in true Pomeranian fashion!
We will be working on building engagement and confidence from the ground- a lot of times with tiny dogs it’s easy for them to feel more comfortable in owners arms. I want her to feel comfortable and able to show off her manners no matter where she is!

An incredible reminder that properly raising/training a puppy can be HARD, it’s almost a full time job in itself.
Some days are incredible, others make you want to throw your hands up and say screw it all.

Take a breath, take a break, check in with your trainer and ask for help! That’s what we’re here for 🤍

When puppies start to hit those scary teenage months it’ll have you questioning your life choices- I’ve been there, I get it 😂
Sometimes a big change or two can be made, but most of the time it just takes a few tweaks and simply staying the course and riding out the highs and lows!

A big shoutout to Bunny’s owner for making some not always fun, but necessary changes and adapting with Bun as she goes through her teens 🤌🏼
(And if you’re wondering, no I absolutely did not let her count a 30 minute phone call as her follow up lesson🤦🏼‍♀️)

Little Bunny girl’s last field trip with me was such a good one!

We hit the farmer’s market which can be absolutely crazy between all the people, dogs and tents.
We stuck to the back area behind the chaos, so we could practice skills and observe without pushing Bunny past her threshold.

Remember y’all- training puppies is a MARATHON nottttttt a sprint. Bunny is still so young! I wanted to make sure I was building engagement with me not putting her in a situation she couldn’t handle.

She took on everything beautifully! Offering a duration down with people and dogs passing (I would not have asked this of a puppy her age at a place this chaotic), working on little spurts of heeling past distractions, and LOTS of engagement work.

Bunny is back home now- but I’m so incredibly proud of this little bean! She’s a solid dog, but she also has an amazing family behind her putting in the work to make her the best she can be!🫶🏼

That’s what it’s all about!
I kickstart your training journey, but real change in your dog is grown from home 😉

Meet Tucker!✨
This sweet little old man is here for almost 3 weeks of boarding while his parents explore Italy!

Tucker has been a boarding client of mine for a few years now. While I no longer accept boarders that have not been through a training program of mine, Tucker here is grandfathered in.

My sweet Blue bean went home and I couldn’t be more grateful that I had the opportunity to work with such a sweet, spunky + goofy little girl.
She came to me reactive, marching to the beat of her own drum, and having issues in the home with her sister. I’m so SO excited for her owner to enjoy the more relaxed, carefree and trusting Blue 🤍
I told her owner quite a few times that we would take her in a heartbeat- that’s how much we fell in love 😂

I have a love/hate relationship with this part of the training process; I LOVE seeing dogs go back home to their owners to live their best lives. But giving them back is tough 😂
I’m so proud of Blue and her owner and I’m so excited to see their relationship flourish 🤍

Blue got to enjoy Celery Fields tonight with Soph and it was so much fun watching HER have fun and enjoy her off-leash freedom. She was loving it and it warmed my heart seeing how far she’s come in 4 weeks.

Welcome to The Home Grown Dog family Bunny girl!
Bunny is a sweet little 5 month old lab, here for our 2 week board and train. Her mom has already such done a wonderful job raising her so far, I’m so excited to work with them both!
Bunny’s mom had a vacation to go on and ALMOST backed out so she could make sure her training continued- I’m honored she trusted us to work with Bunny girl, AND so happy that she’s getting to go on a much needed vacation with her family! (Lisa I know you’re reading this- go have fun!!)
Raising a puppy is a lot of work y’all 🤪

Just wanna brag on this little nutball for a minute 🫶🏼

Bringing home a Malinois from a rescue was a gamble- and when I got her home she had some really awesome traits! …that were also accompanied by some not so awesome traits.
It’s now been just under 3 months and the leaps and bounds she’s made in that time I couldn’t be more proud of.

When she came home any loud noise would send her straight into a pancake frantically looking for shelter or hiding under me. Living in Florida with LOTS of thunderstorms and ~Florida people~ who light fireworks off for just about anything, that definitely concerned me.

It’s been a work in progress- but today we had a huge storm, BIG thunder before the rain came while I had all the dogs outside playing. And while she acknowledged the noise, she kept right on playing ball with me 🫶🏼🥹
No cowering, no bolting to the door with her tail tucked. Just a glance at the sky!

Remember to celebrate the little victories with your dogs- it makes the big ones that much sweeter 🥰
***and also remember that dog trainers’ dogs are also….just dogs! Not perfect machines. No dogs are🤌🏼

This sweet girl has been crushing her training, but even more so, she just has the most willing to please attitude and has been such a joy to have at the house.

As a dog trainer it’s so much fun to see dogs come out of their shell and ENJOY learning!

Welcome ✨officially✨ miss Blue, to The Home Grown Dog family 🫶🏼

Blue is a 5(ish) year old Cocker Spaniel and she’s here for 4 weeks to learn ALL the things. We will be focusing on a solid recall and place command with this lil girl, while also introducing a lot more structure to her day.

It’s only day 3 but I’m so excited to see this girl thrive with a new language and more guidance!

I mean this with all the love in the world; but we as a society have got to STOP glorifying overweight dogs.

Dog trainers see it everyday; over fed, under-exercised, too many treats, not enough nutrition. This can absolutely contribute to behavioral problems too!

A lot of times owners get defensive or upset when they’re told their dog is overweight; try not to! It’s not an attack- its us trying to keep your dog healthy and happy.
Hear it, absorb it, understand where your vet/trainer are coming from and work towards making it better!

Confidence Building:

It’s a term dog trainers use frequently, but what does it mean?

Confidence building helps teach your dog to overcome insecurity and work through doubt. It is built on having repeated success in a certain area or activity.

Then you can also slowly increase difficulty of that area once you have success to build on their confidence!

In short; it means helping your dog go from:
I can’t > I don’t know if I can > I think I can > I know I can!

And then showing your dog this thought process in different scenarios!
For instance- The first time I asked Vala to jump up on this drywall sheet that was almost taller than me, she hesitated. She’s jumped up on tons of things, but this was pretty tall! I communicated with her (leash) to keep moving forward because i knew she could do it. Once she did; I threw her a party! Lots of pets and rewards.
The second time I asked she was much more confident in doing what I asked of her, because she had done it with success before!

Set your dogs up for success! Building confidence starts with the small, everyday things.
