👉 The long version of how I caught Sully's bloat has been requested, so buckle up for this doozy of a story.
Now, Sully had been diagnosed with spondylosis a few weeks ago. He's been taking medication for that as well as going to physical therapy (see our post with him on the water treadmill for more details regarding that).
On Thursday, the day of the emergency gastropexy, he had a good day at physical therapy (he literally skipped out of the building to my car), came home, had some lunch and basically just relaxed. Later in the afternoon, he began to pace around the house, wouldn't settle and wouldn't stop whining and crying. I chalked it up to him being in pain and offered him some of his gabapentin (he had been about due for a dose), but he refused the pill and continually spit it out of anything I put it in. I ended up putting the pill back into the container since he clearly wouldn't take it.
He went into the kitchen and began to guzzle all the water out of his bowl, then immediately threw up a giant puddle of clear mucus. I told him he was OK, shuffled him out the back door and began to clean it up. He came back in shortly thereafter and promptly guzzled all the water out of the little guys' bowl. Again, he immediately threw up another puddle of clear mucus. He then walked back outside again into the rain (I had not yet shut the back door), dug himself a hole in the yard and laid down and started crying again.
At this point, I knew something was definitely wrong. I ran outside and struggled to get him up. Once I had him on his feet, I felt his stomach and it was rock hard (one of the signs of bloat). I checked his gums and they were almost white, they were so pale (another sign of bloat). Coupled with the other symptoms (restlessness, crying/whining, pain, panting), I instantly suspected that he was in the process of bloating.
