Happy Donkey Day

Beautiful tribute to our beloved Donkeys to share on this WORLD DONKEY DAY MAY 8 🌎
HUG a Donkey(s) when you can on this day and every day!
Every day we should celebrate Donkeys and Mules, the world hardest working Animals. Donkeys and Mules are a Blessing đź’ž ~ Ariane

May first is International Workers’ Day Worldwide (except for the US and Canada) to remind humanity of the value of those among us who work hard. A separate day seemed to be necessary to remind humanity of the Animal workers among us, who work just as hard as the human workers they usually help, and who suffer from an even lower value. So therefore a week later May 8th, we celebrate Donkeys and Mules.
For more than 6000 years DONKEYS have been carrying and pulling loads, turning wheels and generally laboring away to extend the work of humans. More recently they have been joined by horses, camels, elephants and oxen, but even today, all over the world where resources are scarce and speed is less important, Donkeys are still the main providers of such work.
Give them a thought; give them some appreciation. If any are nearby, go give them a hug or a carrot!

Text inspired by Peta Jones.

PS: The flyer was sent to me by a follower, Marilyn Clark in 2017. I can't share her post anymore. Facebook doesn't allow me to share visitors' posts anymore for unknown reason.
I couldn't find anything about the author of that poem, if anyone has any information, please let me know. Thanks.

One more reason to love donkeys

The Donkey's Cross 🙏
I like to share this beautiful tribute to our beloved Donkeys this time of the year. ~ Ariane

The Donkeys were so important to Christ that they are mentioned 444 times in the Bible. The humble Donkey is also the only mammal given speech in the Bible.
One of the reasons I love Donkeys so much: Donkeys accompanied Jesus and the Holy Family throughout Their lives.

*** The Donkey's Cross:
“Bring me the c**t of a Donkey” was the Master's request.
A young Donkey was brought to Jesus to carry Him to Jerusalem.
Five days later He was ordered to be crucified.
The Little Donkey so loved The Lord that he wanted to help Him carry the cross.
But Alas, he was pushed away.
The sad little Donkey waited to say goodbye until nearly all had left.
As he turned to leave, the shadow of the cross fell upon his back and shoulders.
And there it has remained, a tribute to the loyalty and love of the humblest of God's creatures. ***

Bowie says he agrees with everything here except the last part about staying behind to face the wolf…he says he can’t find that rule anyway in the head donkey procedure book…

Some donkey facts you might not know of!
Donkeys can live for over 50 years
Donkeys are very strong and intelligent
A donkey is stronger than a horse of the same size.
Donkeys have an incredible memory – they can recognise areas and other donkeys they were with up to 25 years ago.
Donkey characteristics
Donkeys are not easily startled (unlike horses) and have a keen sense of curiosity.
Donkeys have a reputation for stubbornness but this is due to their highly developed sense of self preservation. It is difficult to force or frighten a donkey into doing something it sees as contrary to its own best interest or safety.
Donkeys are more independent in their thinking than horses and will reason, then make decisions based on their safety.
Training a donkey relies upon showing him or her, by words and action, that they can trust you to protect them from harm. They learn what it is we want them to do if we take time to show them.
Donkeys originate from desert areas of the earth
In the desert environment a donkey is able to hear the call of another donkey 60 miles away, they have far larger ears than horses. Their large ears also help keep them cool.
Because food is scarce in the desert, donkeys utilise 95% of what they eat which means their manure is not a very good fertilizer for land. Their digestive system can break down inedible vegetation and extract moisture from food more efficiently.
They don’t like the rain and being out in it for long periods can damage their health as their fur is not waterproof.
Donkeys are herd animals
Donkeys don’t like being kept on their own although a single donkey will live quite happily with goats.
A herd will choose the strongest donkey to be their leader, even if domesticated. In the wild the lead donkey would stay to ward off an attack by a wolf or other predators in order to allow the rest of the herd to escape to safety.
Donkeys in a herd will groom each other in the same way as monkeys and chimps do.

Pedro has settled in with the resident Darby and has everyone wrapped around his hoof.

My Donkey Whisperers, Joan & Jim G., are enjoying introducing Pedro to all the trails around the Sanctuary property.

Pedro is such a confident little donkey. I can see why The Hangry Donkey Ranch, Rescue and Sanctuary 501 c3 called him the “Shrekiest” donkey they ever met.
The only thing he has balked at so far is crossing a puddle of water.

Darby is starting to think that Pedro might be an okay roommate.

The Donkey Poem by PAULA BLANCH

Don’t waste your time young lady, she heard the farmer say.

That donkey, well he’s stupid; they’re all just born that way.

“He’s slow to move, can take no load in buggy or in sack,

The only thing he’s good for is a whip across his back”

But the young girl, she knew different, she could sense it in her heart

She would take the donkey home with her and give him a new start.

So the farmer took her money and handed her the reins.

Good riddance to bad rubbish, donks would always be the same.

Ten years of hurt and ignorance and callous disregard,

would need to be forgiven, and left there in the past.

As the young girl walked the donkey home, there was no need for speech

Their hearts and minds and souls were joined, the silence had been breached.

For love can work great magic if you give it but a chance,

stooped heads will rise, old dreams come true and broken hearts will dance.

This story is no different from many I have heard.

It teaches of the power of touch and gently spoken words.

The young girl, now a woman, with children of her own,

still loves this dusty donkey, she first brought to her home.

You see the donkey symbolizes critters everywhere,

that never get to share their gifts or know that humans care.

Through history, their lives have been all service, toil and scorn.

A million miles of pain laid out along the paths they’ve worn.

It doesn’t have to be like that, the answer’s in our hands

All animals can share the blessings God first gave to man.

Lets take the time to figure out the debt that they have due,

Each dusty lonely donkey, with our love, can start anew.

Thank you, Liz Barrett for sharing this poem with us.
