Most equine owners know that a negative Coggins test is a document required to be able to transport their animal across state lines, enter them in a competitive event, or board at someone's barn. But what does the phrase "negative Coggins test" actually mean?

A "Coggins" is a blood test that can only be performed by USDA-approved laboratories and checks for Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA) antibodies in the blood. EIA is a potentially fatal blood-borne infectious viral disease that is primarily transmitted by biting flies, particularly horseflies—which means that your animals are at risk even if they never travel or live in a closed herd.

The clinical signs of disease can vary dramatically from an acute infection to an inapparent form, but what is important to know is that it produces a persistent infection. Once an animal tests positive for EIA it becomes a lifelong source of disease transmission, so the owner can only choose between quarantine for life or humane euthanasia to ensure that large outbreaks of the disease don’t occur. There is no vaccine and no treatment for EIA.

Take-home message: While a Coggins test is a necessary travel document, don’t forget that it's also first and foremost a way to identify and remove EIA carriers to keep the disease under control.

Dear BPH training clients:
It has come to our attention that as rates have increased the last few years, several accounts did not incur the actual updated costs.

Please check your upcoming invoices.
There is a rate sheet posted at the barn in are you’re unaware of the current pricing structure.

You will nolonger see an inflation surcharge on your account.

Thank you!

Its time!

Every year we like to sit down with every client and do a budget and strategy meeting. This allows us to make a one & two year goal and a plan to execute it!

It doesn't matter if you're just in the lesson program, or showing at a national level, when we sit down and have an intestinal conversation about our vision, we can put together a great plan to fit your budget (well....) and aspirations.

We are looking forward to getting together with you ASAP!

The photo on the left is a picture of the tail bags we previously used. The reason we do not use them anymore is this photo. We booth the horse and she came with this tail bag. I do usually use hanging buckets, but we were out of barrels. This horses tail got caught repeatedly. We do our best to change these out before we haul, but they sometimes get missed going to closer shows. We have had multiple horses get out of the trail with half a long bag. You put one in, you are at risk of tail loss. We do not suggest long bags.

A couple times per year, I will have horses get thier tails bags caught on the fence or have the longer bags get stepped on.

Their tails get matted in the bottom, particularly in the summer. It is VERY dry here and hair maintenance is a full time job.

Tails need to be put up correctly.

I do not recommend using the longer bags. They get caught, they tear, and your horse may loose some tail.

Next, leave more tail hair out. It’s for flies and, on the off chance your horse did get its tail caught and lost hair, you would have a back up.

If you have never gotten a proper lesson on putting your horse’s tail up, please take the time to ask.

Youth riders should be taking care of their own horse’s manes and tails. It’s an act of “pouring in” and “putting hands” on their sport. We want to encourage pride of ownership and making their project its personal best.

Tail bags should be short, and tail should securely be fastened, be well moisturized, and tangle free when put up.

The grey horse’s tail is the correct length. It should have more tail hair out.

The bay tail bag is too long and too low. It will be tangled when it comes out and could get caught up.

Use a good quality shampoo, not “what’s cheap” at Target.

Use a heavy moisturizer and cowboy magic at the base of the tail and mane. I had a student tell me they were told to use cowboy magic “just at the ends” that was bad information and incorrect. It is a detangler and should be used to avoid breakage.

Do not use cowboy magic on greys or white tails.

Use whitening shampoos on white tails.

If your horse is folically challenged, use MTG once per week.

Feel free to ask questions.
