Equine Health Update: EHV/EHM Outbreak Out of State

The NYS Department of Agriculture & Markets has reported an outbreak of Equine Herpes Virus (EHV/EHM) connected to recent barrel racing and rodeo events in Texas. Cases have been confirmed in Texas and Oklahoma, with more under investigation.

There are currently no confirmed cases in New York.
New York officials are actively monitoring the situation and will contact any owners directly if their horses are identified as exposed.
If your horse has recently traveled to Texas, Oklahoma, or other events where exposure may have occurred:
Please contact the NYS Division of Animal Industry at 518-457-3502 or [email protected] for guidance.
- Exposed horses should be isolated for 21 days
- Do not share equipment or personnel between horses
- Monitor temperature twice daily (fever = >101.5°F)
- Watch for respiratory signs or neurologic symptoms
- Contact your veterinarian immediately if any symptoms develop

Upcoming Equine Events:
Because EHV can be shed even by horses that appear healthy, owners and event organizers should talk with their veterinarians about risks. Increased biosecurity—and in some cases postponing events—may be recommended.

Interstate Travel:
Some states may implement new movement or import requirements during this outbreak. Always check regulations before traveling with your horse.
We will share updates as more information becomes available.
This is an important reminder of the disease risks associated with large equine events and the importance of good biosecurity and proper health documentation when traveling

Stay safe, and don’t hesitate to contact us with concerns.

If your horse has Cushings, and is taking Prascend, please help Dr. Hughes of University of Minnesota with this research study! 📄

📣 Calling all my horse friends!!
I could use your urgent help to finish enrolling PPID horses in an important genetics study we are conducting at University of Minnesota.

Enrollment is quite simple and allows us to answer important questions about disease risk and why horses respond differently to treatment with pergolide.

Please let me know if I can answer questions about the study and would be happy to chat about your individual horse eligibility.
Help us help the horses you love! ❤️🐴

September 28th is National Rabies Day. But what is rabies and why do we care??
Rabies is an 100% fatal viral disease of the nervous system. Transmission occurs through saliva of infected animals, usually via a bite (but a bite is not necessary). While rabies is relatively rare in horses (partly due to routine vaccination), there are cases throughout the US each year. Once infected, there is no treatment and anyone in contact with the infected animal is at risk.
Vaccination is the cornerstone of rabies prevention in the horse, and an annual booster is recommended to ensure titer levels remain sufficient for protection. There is a common misconception that animals that have received rabies vaccines annually can stop being vaccinated as they age. However, there is evidence to suggest that immune systems actually weaken with age, making the need for vaccination essential in geriatric horses. (read the full AAEP vaccination guidelines here: https://aaep.org/guidelines/vaccination-guidelines)
Rabies is a horrifying illness, which puts everyone at risk. If animals are not vaccinated and develop concerning symptoms, rabies can not be ruled out, which makes medical care and intervention a challenge. One vaccine prevents so much heartache and risk.
Below is an infographic created by our friends, the American Association of Equine Practitioners that shows the many faces of Rabies.
