Why do you have goats? I would love to hear your thoughts.
This is Delta. Delta checks so many boxes for me. At 5 years old she is "only" an 87 final score, our lowest appraising senior Nubian. She is in the top half of our producers, but no where near the top. Just a good consistant "gallon a day". She has *1* Reserve Champion ribbon, and admittedly an "ugly head" for Nubian. Basically she is nothing spectacular by any standards written by anyone but us.
Where are all the rest of the "pretty" goats in these pictures? Off somewhere else. But Delta chooses us. Goes blackberry picking. Enjoying and sharing our company. At milking time, she gives no fuss. Milks consistently, and easily no matter if we are feeding crack alfalfa or orchard grass, using the machine or by hand. On show day she enjoys walking out with us, and stands proudly wherever we end up in the line. I could give her to a 6 year old to show, and she would calmly go wherever she was led.
Here at Urban Acres, having goats isn't just about "show wins", or high appraisal scores. Neither is it about "bucket busting" breed leader production. It is about this. Enjoying the goats we have no matter what we are doing. We participate in all those programs, but they dont decide who stays or who goes. We do. And a goat like Delta rises to the top as one of my "best" goats ❤️
