Desensitizing Khan to difference sights, sounds, and feelings!

20/08/2024

Shere Khan pupdate: we are just over 24 hours in and I already feel like I’ve missed out on recording so many crucial moments!

Here’s what we have worked on so far:
- No jumping
- 𝙉𝙚𝙫𝙚𝙧 mouthing/biting humans
- Learning his new name (still working on it)
- Crate training (he HATED it for the first hour but we finally found a kennel setup he is comfortable with)
- Potty training is going great!
- Khan does ⓃⓄⓉ eat from a bowl. He is hand fed all food for the day during training sessions!
- Basic obedience commands: Sit, Place, Down
- Self control: holding commands for short periods of time until released with “𝔹ℝ𝔼𝔸𝕂!”
- Encouraging and rewarding calmness (shown in the video) ⏬👇⬇️

This is a silent drill! Khan does know how to sit and lay down but, for this drill, it’s important that I DON’T prompt him. He loves food and was being very pushy to get to the food. Before this drill, he was jumping up constantly and even knocked a bowl or two out of my hands 🤦🏻‍♀️

Again, I am not communicating with him verbally here. I am waiting for him to show a calm behavior and then rewarding it! He figured it out immediately, so I made it harder by getting down on his level. You can see that he tried to dive into the bowl one single time before he figured out that calm behaviors worked better ✨

I started tossing treats away from me so that he could run back excitedly and try again! He consistently chose calm behaviors and consistently got paid with treats!

We are also running a similar drill while sitting down to eat dinner, watch tv, or doing computer work. Teaching calmness and neutrality is important for ALL puppies, but since he is a very energetic breed, we really want to emphasize this early on!

Meet KHAN! This little boy is Happy Hounds Owner, Megan’s, new sidekick!

Khan (new name, only slightly different than the last name he had) was rehomed at just 4 months old because of a career change that meant he would no longer be able to go to work with his dad 💔 his owners realized they could not provide a Malinois puppy with the attention/time he deserved if they were both working 8+ hours a day 💔

Lucky for Khan, Megan has trained many mals, and now owns a retired police k9 that she trained while in Texas!

Check back for Khan updates and free puppy training tips over the next few weeks and months! This is going to be a blast! ✨🐶

We love receiving glowing reviews about ecollar usage!!

It is a controversial training tool, and we do understand WHY (it can be misused, it may not be the correct choice for every dog, cheap equipment can physically hurt dogs, punishing dogs for unwanted behaviors is not actual training).

We have worked with countless clients who were uneasy about ecollar usage prior to discussing it with us and seeing how we actually utilize the tool. Usually, this education is enough for them to become comfortable with trying it and then they end up LOVING the tool once they see the results we can get with their dog 🐶

The final step is the challenging part for most… feeling comfortable using the tool out in public and proudly sharing their experience due to the fear of ridicule from people who simply do not understand. Every post we make receives some form of judgement and criticism for our use of the ecollars, I simply don’t care. I am able to brush it off because I KNOW deep down how valuable this equipment can be and how much freedom it allows our dogs to have 💕

If you have used and enjoyed using ecollars, please share your experience to help shift the narrative!

Friendly reminder 🎆💊🐶

As an owner of a couple anxious dogs myself, I will share this every year.

Quick PSA: During the Fourth of July holiday, and the days leading it up to it when folks start celebrating with noisy fireworks, scores of pets run away from the sights and sounds, making the day after Independence Day the busiest of the year for animal hospitals and shelters. Please do your due diligence. And if you feel as though your pet may need medication to help them relax during firework season, now is the time to speak with your veterinarian!

⬇️ I tell my clients this all the time ⬇️

Me: “do you want your dog to repeat that behavior?”

Them: “no”

Me: “then don’t let them 🤷🏻‍♀️”

The dog training world loves to overcomplicate and make simple things into complex things—either because folks are unhealthily obsessed, or because they’re desperate to seem wise, deep, and insightful.

Hey, if you want to ponder, and ruminate, and explore every nook and cranny of possibilities, knock yourself out.

But, the unfortunate reality is that this hyper-fixation on “finding the underlying answers—answers which we can never truly know”, and thinking these guesses will reveal the much needed answers for trainers and owners looking to find actual answers that can be applied with no questioning or uncertainty or paralyzing confusion—is not only delusional, but also terribly detrimental to solving problems (sorry dogs, sorry owners) which if looked at through a far simpler, and far more useful lens… would reveal a simple blueprint for creating solutions and harmonious lives with our dogs.

Until dogs start talking, we can only guess as to what is truly behind their behavior, and even then, if they could tell us, we’d still never know to what degree each component in their constellation of issues were the most pressing and needed the most focus. In other words, we’d still be guessing.

Or, we can take a far more simple, and a far more useful and effective approach by simply asking the questions in this graphic, and then acting on the answers we receive back.

This dog training thing is far easier than most would like you to believe. Because if you knew how simple, and obvious it all was, these folks wouldn’t enjoy the manufactured status, the false-but-feel-good-ego-boosts, nor the remuneration that comes with having the unique and deep insights which only the anointed few are able to enjoy.

It’s a beautiful spring day, but my waggle temp monitor is already reading 80° because the van is closed up and sitting in the sun - don’t worry, the van doesn’t have any dogs in it 😜🐶
