Here's a look at how cooperative care and touch transference can make the seemingly impossible, possible. Sassy was adopted about a year ago from the West Bank. Before life in Seattle, she likely had very little in terms of handling and vet care. We encouraged the owners to utilize cooperative care techniques to habituate Sassy to veterinary procedures like common restraint holds and stimuli. Here Coral is giving her a vaccine while the owner performs the learned stimuli-- a mechanical pencil held to her tented skin. Since Sassy is familiar with this and doesn't mind it, it allowed Coral to use touch transference to administer the vaccine. Sassy was distracted with a yummy lick mat and plenty of treats. The appointment was smooth and everyone was relaxed. Success! Shout out to Sassy's owners for being willing to do the training regularly that got her to this point!
