Gosh I cannot believe I have a teenager. Time flies!

Every moment Louie has is because of the tireless efforts of Beagle Freedom Project. If anyone is inclined to get Lou man a present for this momentous occasion, please consider a donation to them. They have directly saved thousands of animals from death and suffering. Their legislative efforts have reduced pain and suffering for animals everywhere.

If money is tight though, consider making today a vegan day in Lou's honor. Skip the animal-derived foods and pile on some extra beans! After all, farting a lot is an excellent way to honor a dog on his birthday.

Today, I feel like a failure. I let Louie down.

Lou and I were having our one on one time. I took him to the farmers market and for a little walk around town. Then we went to the beach because he loves to go there without all of his siblings. Because he can sniff what he wants and climb what he wants and do what he wants.

A family was there with their two dogs. And Lou stopped to watch and was wagging his tail and was interested in saying hi. Lou is very extroverted and super calm so I will always let him say hello if the other dogs seem receptive.

One of the dogs, however, was very spastic and out of control, pulling at his leash, barking nonstop, had his hackles up and very aggressive body language. So I declined to let Louie meet this dog.

Their other dog was calmer and presenting with very positive body language, even though he was clearly quite excited. Excited can be dangerous even without warning signs so I was cautious. We did a very slow introduction and it went well.

Louie and the dog were enjoying meeting each other and sniffing. But then the woman holding the leash of the overstimulated dog decided to let him pull her over and shove his way into this meet and greet. He growled before I could do anything and bit Lou's ear. I didn't even have time to try to extract him before this happened.

I should have been keeping an eye on the rest of my surroundings so I would have seen her approaching and could have removed him immediately. I know better but I was too complacent in thinking my earlier pass on meeting would be sufficient to keep her away.

And I did worse and screamed at her immediately after. Yelling never helps a situation. It escalates and creates more tension in the dogs. I calmed myself, saw he was bleeding, asked for their info in case I have vet bills and confirmed the dog is vaccinated.

Being a dog guardian is hard. It's emotional on good days. Heartbreaking on bad ones.

He is home now. Cleaned, clotted, cuddling me. ❤️

Louie's favorite hobby is licking stuff. The dude licks everything, all the time. Always has. He has quite a loud slurp too. So I just bust out those noise canceling headphones and let him go nuts with his post-walk treat.

Louie is a bit of a winter boy. That mostly means he loves cuddling and blankets and napping by a cozy fire. His favorite thing is to be all tucked up on me while I read books. Honestly, it's my favorite thing too.

Happy New Year! Louie has his midnight snuggle buddy situation all sorted out. He won't be awake for the ball drop but he's got all the love and kisses he wants waiting for him when he wakes up.

We hope everyone is having a wonderful holiday season. Our weather has been warmer and a bit drier than usual so Lou man and his sisters are spending plenty of time amongst the trees.

We don't really observe traditional Thanksgiving but it is worth saying that I am eternally thankful to have Louie and all of his love and snuggles in my life.

And we are thankful for everyone who supports Beagle Freedom Project and their mission. If you're able to give, please think of them for any charitable contributions you might make in the coming weeks. Your support is what lets all of us guardians have special moments like this with dogs that would otherwise be killed.

It's fall y'all!!! Louie loves walking this time of year. It's not too hot, not too cold. However, the big leaf maple leaves are a continual source of consternation. They're about half the size of him and he is not a guy who wants to wade through rivers of leaves.

Also just an "admin" note: I've been seeing loads of spam advertising puppies for sale and stuff. I'm trying to remove all of that and block the people posting it.

If anyone has a legitimate group that they'd like a post made about, please just talk to me. Don't post 15 comment replies to random people on this page. If you see those comments, please feel free to report them to me and I'll come take care of them.

Big big big week for Louie! He celebrated his 10th Freedomversary. He has been out of the lab and living a life of cuddles and sniffs for 10 years.

Here are some highlights from his week. Lots of walks. Lots of snuggles with his baby sister. Lots of mooching for snacks.

I also thought folks might like to see a side by side photo of the day I brought him home and this year. He's a little frostier, a little more stubborn, a little slower on his walkies... but he's just as happy to be in a family as the day I first held him in my arms.

His love continues to be all-encompassing and shines brightly on all he meets.

Sunmertime sadness. We're doing some tile floor demolition and Lou man isn't enjoying the noise or enforced outside time. The yard is a toilet to him, not a recreation zone. He'd much rather be on the couch snoozing.

Tomorrow is Louie's 12th birthday!!!! 🥳🎉🎂

He rarely gets solo time with me so as a birthday treat, I took him to the sunday market in town. He spent 2 1/2 hours sniffing, getting lots of pets, and meeting dozens of dogs. He had a blast and is now enjoying his old man afternoon nap.

Summer hammock snuggles! Lou doesn't like to wrestle or play tag with the girls but he is always happy to come climb into the hammock! And cuddle a little bit too close for good photos. 😆

Lou's sister Betsy had to have a pretty major surgery last week. He's been a champ about letting her drape her cone all over him.

These two continue to have a very snuggly relationship and it's pretty much the most adorable thing you'll ever see. Lou absolutely loves being in a cuddle puddle and it's heartwarming to see all the others in the house regularly seek him out when sleepy.

Our new little girl, Nell, loves to hold Louie while they sleep. Lou is even fairly tolerant of her puppy energy when they are awake. He just stoically stands there and lets her jump all over him, thwack him with her tail, and generally ignore all of the calm personal space he likes to have.

I'd say it's going well with Nell and Lou. This frost faced fella is really tolerant of all the new additions over the last couple years. I don't think any of them will ever fill the space Shiloh took up in his heart. But he certainly never wants for a cuddle buddy.

It took some time (Lou is very opposed to being chewed on) but we have finally reached a balance that means I get endless snuggle sessions to stare at. Lou loves nothing more than a cuddle buddy. Awake and playful? Not so much. But warm, snuggly, and snoring? He'll take a dozen.

On August 2nd, Louie became a big brother for the third time!

Please join us in welcoming Nell to our family. She is 6 months old and came to us through a local Seattle rescue who helped pull and transport her and her littermates and mama from a shelter in Kentucky.

Her mama is a purebred beagle but her papa is unknown. Given that she matches Betsy's shape and coloring so much, my money is on bluetick beagle or bluetick coonhound. We'll run a DNA test eventually to find out.

In the meantime, we're working on all the training that comes with having a puppy in the house.

Lou man loves the summer sunshine. No matter how long we live in the Pacific Northwest, I think this guy will always have a bit of California boy in him.

Anyone else got sun worshippers who suddenly seem to go completely deaf when you try to call them back inside on a sunny day?

Happy 11th birthday to this hunka hunka burning love!!

Lou got a nice, roomy basecamp shelter tent for his special day. He is quite allergic to grass, it makes him itchy for days when he naps in the yard. So I wanted to give him an outdoor space to hang with me while I garden. Bonus is that it's got bug screens so no pesky skeeters!

Lou Barking

Independence Day seems like a great time to celebrate freedom of any kind. Today I wanted to share a video I took the other day of Louie. And I wanted to share why it both breaks my heart and makes my heart swell with pride and love. A lot of people ask me what happened to Louie in the lab. The simple answer is I don't know. I know how it affected him. Nightmares, anxiety, regular bouts of nausea. I know the sores he had on his paws from cage life when I got him fresh from his time in the lab. I know that he had no idea how to actually eat food when I got him and I know what that suggests was done to him. I really don't know any more than that. But I do know one thing that was done in the lab. This sweet little pup had his vocal cords cut in a procedure known as debarking. They do this to keep the dogs quieter so their cries don't bother the researchers. He suffered in silence. Louie found his "voice" only a few weeks after being rescued back in 2013. He doesn't bark often and I still have never heard him whimper, yelp, whine or chatter at me the way Shiloh does. I'm not even sure he is capable of those less boisterous noises. And while his bark isn't the well known hound dog howl that beagles are known for, or even a "normal" dog bark, I still think it is a beautiful sound. It is the sound of him celebrating his freedom.
