Afternoon Pupdate 🐾

We had a fully booked Thanksgiving with Greta, Kona, Phoebe, Spencer, Teegan, Brinlee, Henry, Marco, Harley, Gracie, Sunny, Sissy, Hazel, Hank, Bentley, Simba, Beau, Miska, Midas, Mando, Ellie, Franky, Frisco, Gwen, Tucker, Milo, Milo, Duke, Quin, Re*****on, R***r, Romeo, Zola, Chief, Marco. πŸ•πŸ‘πŸ¦ƒ

The dogs enjoyed their Thanksgiving meal πŸ₯• 🌱 this afternoon and feasted on carrots, green beans, cold cut turkey slices, and whipped cream. They were so excited they started sneaking into the bowls right off the cart before we could pass them out.

Geronimo's mom stopped by with an entire feast for US. Can you believe that!? It took so much stress off making our own dinner this year.

Thank you for booking with Bark House! The dogs are having a great time and we hope you enjoy the remainder of your holiday. ❀️

Disclaimer: Thanksgiving is the only time we offer meals in a group setting. All dogs were cordial and made clean bowls within seconds. πŸ€£πŸ—

Happy Thanksgiving from Bark House πŸ¦ƒ
Our annual sappy post πŸ‘‡

Each year we are most thankful for our clients ❀️. You keep the lights on at Bark House 🏑. Every daycare day, every boarding night, and every dog bath and cat groom pushes us one step closer to our goals. Your constant support really does mean a lot to us, as it does to any small business. Because of you, we were able to donate more this year and participate in quite a few local events.

2025 started off strong πŸ’ͺ with the Boys and Girls Club Silent Auction in February where we donated a K9 care basket.

A few months later in May we had our 3rd Birthday Pawty πŸŽ‰ at the dog park. That was so much fun! We had a local lemonade truck passing out free lemonade and a Jr Baker showcasing her baked goods. We also attended the Queen City CAPS expo in support of the students who shadowed at Bark House that school year.

July creeped up and we walked in the Fourth of July Parade. The costumes were great βœ‹οΈπŸ€£

Then we co-hosted Barkfest in August along with Jr Doggie Day Camp on the same day. The kids still talk about it πŸ₯Ή.

We missed the July Stuff the Bus 🚍 and ended up donating boxes of supplies closer to school starting in August. It was the most we've ever donated and even though we were behind, the items were still desperately needed!

September rolled around and we donated to the Open Door Break Bread and Raise Hope Gala and sponsored/attended the Mental Mixology 🍸 Walkathon. It was the absolute perfect day for the walk and Elex raised SO much for her cause!

The end of the year was extra busy with our Halloween Pawty downtown πŸŽƒ, the PCCP food drive πŸ₯–, and the CASA In Her Shoes πŸ‘  event all in October.

This month (Nov), again thanks to you, we were able to donate $600 to the United Way Give Where You Live Campaign πŸ₯°. The PCCP also reached out for help and we were able to support a veteran in need this year. He and his family were able to keep their dog and will now enjoy a comfortable Christmas as well. πŸ™

We may have listed some larger events but we also donated to various other fundraisers for schools, clubs, and organizations this year including bags of pet food to local rescues when there was a shortage and sponsoring a handful of kids through Angel Tree for Christmas🐾.

We love helping our community πŸ™Œ. What we're saying is...without you, none of what we listed above would've happened this year. You truly helped us make a difference. People and pets who were hungry were able to eat. Kids who needed transportation and uniforms covered were able to play sports. Organizations exceeded their goals. People who just moved to town and didn't know anyone were able to attend free events with their pets and meet new friends. You guys...YOU did this! We were just the hub to help make it happen. And for that, we remain thankful for you year after year. πŸ—“πŸ€—

A special thank you to the clients who have lent a helping hand when needed. To those who have brought coffee and donuts and whatever else to make our day just a little bit easier. You've seen us cry, bleed πŸ˜†, fall down, get frustrated, vent, and more. You've witnessed things customers should'nt have to 🀣 and yet you're still here with us. We really felt the love this year when life didn't give us very many breaks. Seriously, we didn't mention it, but one client didn't pay a cent of their $6k+ bill and left us caring for their dogs for 6 months for FREE, food included. They are walking around our community doing the same to others. It just makes us appreciate our community even more knowing we have the support we do behind us.

Lastly, this Thanksgiving we are greatful for Steve Goldsmith, Pamela Williams, and far too many others we lost this year. Both clients used Bark House for their dogs needs for years. Steve (owner of Greta the GSD) and Pam (owner of Bear and Laila) both passed away last week and will be greatly missed by us and many other Bark House clients. We are thankful for the years of business they gave us and all the support along the way. ❀️

Thank you for choosing us. πŸ•πŸ‘
Thank you for supporting us. πŸ™
Happy Thanksgiving from Bark House Bed & Biscuit! πŸ™‚

**The dogs will enjoy their Thanksgiving meal of green beans, carrots, turkey, and a pup cup this afternoon and pupdates will be posted then.

-Our annual updated program of veterinary care is turned in to the state. Bordetella will remain a mandatory 6 month vaccination at Bark House πŸ’‰We've seen positive results this year compared to previous years when we just required it annually. What's new is that in 2026, we are highly recommending the Leptospirosis vaccine. Lepto is not mandatory at this time, but we suggest discussing with your veterinarian if you typically decline it.

Afternoon Pupdate 🐾

Well folks, Thanksgiving πŸ¦ƒ week is keeping us on our toes. Between daycare and boarding, we've already checked in 80 different dogs since yesterday 🀯. No, not at one time 🀣 There's daycare dogs coming and going on top of the boarding intake. A revolving door!πŸšͺ Only a few handfuls of dogs are new, everyone else is a regular and knows the routine. "Easy" holiday this year 🀞

πŸ‘‰ With that being said, we do need to cancel daycare the rest of the week πŸ—“. We are so sorry to spring it on you last minute but we are just too full with boarders that require the space.

Dog Numbers: Let’s Talk About Them 🐾

We often hear comments about how many dogs we intake, almost like it’s a bad thing.
β€œWow… Bark House has a lot of dogs.”

Well… KIND of πŸ˜… but not really πŸ€·β€β™‚οΈπŸ€·β€β™€οΈ Sedalia just doesn't know any better 🀣 but we are helping y'all get there! 🫑

β€’ Most professional boarding/daycare facilities use a 1:10–1:15 ratio, just like Bark House.
β€’ Many high-volume daycares safely run 1:15–1:20 with structured groups. These are facilities with hundreds of dogs. Hundreds. Not 30.

We’re Not Overcrowded, We’re Right Where a Quality Facility Should Be

In the boarding/daycare world, Bark House is considered a low-to-medium capacity kennel.

Industry standards recommend 10–15 dogs per staff member. We have 3 trained, certified people, which means we can safely handle 30–45 dogs. That’s not just normal, it’s the standard.

Sedalia simply isn’t used to seeing a fully booked, professionally run facility… so a full roster feels unusual here, not to mention paired with the online stigma and constant negativity pouring from the inexperienced. But full rosters are healthy, typical, and expected in structured daycare environments. ❀️

Here's why larger groups are more beneficial πŸ‘‡

Why Small Playgroups Aren’t Actually β€œSafer”

A lot of people assume fewer dogs = safer dogs.

But in canine behavior science, that’s not how it works. πŸ€”

Small groups (especially mismanaged ones) can actually cause MORE behavior issues because:

1. Dogs don’t learn real-world social pressure.
They don’t get practice navigating different personalities, ages, playstyles, or intensities.

2. Dogs become over-bonded.
With only one playmate available, dogs fixate, leading to clinginess, resource guarding, and poor adaptability.

3. Trigger stacking happens faster.
With only two dogs together, there’s no β€œbuffer dog” to disperse energy or tension.

4. Mismatched pairs become risky.
Think of a slower daycare that takes around 10 dogs a day or relies on the same person to supervise every play group:
A small dog arrives β†’ they place it with the only other small dog β†’ it’s a senior.
Then the puppy jumps all over the senior, the senior tries to politely escape, staff misread it as β€œcute,” and the senior gets pushed past its limits. Okay, so let's separate these dogs into their own groups. You now have a group of 1 and another group of 1. Where is the benefit in this?

With one employee available, how is that person efficiently and safely managing all play groups by themselves? Or are they not separating groups and just throwing ALL play styles together? And if they aren't doing that and they are separating, where is your dog, then? Is your dog actually being placed in a kennel until it's their turn instead of taking full advantage of the services? How many turns do they get, then? This is what you need to question!! Low play groups and slower kennels need to be evaluated a little deeper to ensure your dog is actually benefiting from the care, not being forced to make friends with whoever is checked in that day or being separated by themselves without structured enrichment. 🀌

This is stressful, unsafe, and unfair to the dogs.

5. Dogs get bored.
Lack of variety = low stimulation = behavior issues later.
Small groups are not inherently safer, they’re often just limited. πŸ‘ˆ READ THAT AGAIN. They are not safer, they are just limited.

So Why Might Your Dog Look Nervous at Check-In at a Kennel?

It’s usually not the number of dogs.
It’s the environmental shift and lack of experience.

Dogs who show uncertainty at drop-off are typically struggling with:
β€’ Low socialization
β€’ Low familiarization
β€’ Low desensitization

Meaning: they’d act the same even if no dogs were here at all. They'd even act the same with a pet sitter in your own home.

And that’s exactly why structured, well-run, properly staffed daycare is so beneficial. It gives dogs the controlled exposure they need to become confident and adaptable. ❀️

Afternoon Pupdate 🐾

The only small thing about Bark House this week are the dogs πŸ—“πŸ€£

Today was at capacity with dogs Bennie, Solo, Tucker, Hollie, Ollie, Kota, Auggy, Mando, Lillie, Charlie, Maverick, Hoss, Greta, Marco, Henry, Phoebe, Vladi, Ozzy, Loki, Juno, Rosie, Loki, Harley, Gracie, Daisy, Franky, Ellie, Dax, Dolly, Re*****on, Lainey, R***r, Penny, Bugs, Romeo, Cache, and newcomers Simba, Quin, Coco, and Daisy. πŸ•πŸ‘

All newcomers are doing okay πŸ‘. Quin is a bit timid at this time and prefers her own space. We respect that and gave her a comfy quiet spot away from the action. Simba was shy at first when he checked in but opened up by the PM session and has been wrestling with new friends, especially Mando. Coco and Daisy were a little shy at first, too, but have been exploring, mingling, and even playing with some dogs here and there. The first time at a kennel is always the hardest and these dogs are adjusting well for checking in during one of our business weeks of the year. ❀️🐾

Morning Pupdate 🐾🌞

The weekend is full with Greta, Howard, Gwen, Tucker, Rosie, Nala, Clio, Re*****on, R***r, Romeo, Doug, Dolly, Dax, Penny, Jojo, Juno, Mando, Stella, Sadie, Rex, Brie, Tucker, Hollie, Bennie, Marco and his new brother Henry, newcomer Simba, as well as another handful of newcomers expected to check in. πŸ•πŸ‘ 8+ new dogs in the last two days!

The rain 🌧 doesn't stop the dogs at Bark House and you can bet that trampoline is still used to the max 🀣. Speaking of which ☝️. If anyone is looking for a legit trampoline for Christmas, our Jumpzilla has withheld double the weight limit βš–οΈ, daily activity, and unmanicured dog nails like no other. It has handled multiple adult Great Danes, Saint Bernards, and other large breeds all at the same time. Did it stretch nearly to the ground? Yes. But did it bust πŸ€”? No πŸ™. The only parts that haven't lasted the test of dogs is, of course, the safety net and the padding. Those are easily replaceable. We recommend our Jumpzylla brand trampoline in particular specifically because it withstands dogs. Bark House dogs. πŸ˜† Small dogs and large dogs. Even the more active seniors get up there.
