Sandy's Way Microfarm -Sprister Family

Sandy's Way Microfarm -Sprister Family Sandy's Way CSA and Microfarm is a 1/3 acre Certified Naturally Grown market farm. What is a CSA? The most often question we are asked.

The name of this farm Sandy's Way is dedicated to Ebrain "Sandy" Santiago; father, grandfather and friend. This farm, or at least the idea of this farm, started 7 years ago, in a suburban backyard, with seven 4 foot by 4 foot boxes in which we grew our own food. Growing that food became a passion and in 2013 we gave up the suburban backyard and bought a 5 acre ranch just outside Castle Rock, Col

orado. We have been selling pastured chicken eggs to select customers since late 2014.

2015 was the year to put in place our micro-farm infrastructure and test growing conditions on a 5000 sq foot area.

2016 marked the start of our CSA and market garden! The idea is it is a partnership between a farmer and a community of people who value their food. Quality food, that is produced close to home, with natural techniques and care. Food from people you can fellowship with. Basically a customer "subscribes" at the beginning of the year, pays up front and receives quality local food for a certain period of time.

This spring has been something else.

The tomatoes were scheduled to go in the ground April 18th. What showed up instead, snow and 18-degree temps. Tried again the next week. Cold again. So every transplant came back inside. Tomatoes, peppers, cucumbers, summer squash, all of them are sitting on every flat surface in my house right now.

Even with high tunnels, I wasn't comfortable putting them in the ground. Better to be safe than sorry when it comes to high-demand crops like tomatoes.

But here's the good news, while those summer crops stay warm inside, the spring beds are growing strong. And the Community Harvest Hub is getting stocked.

I'm planning to open around May 15th.

This is the part of farming most people never see.

Right now the fields are pushing out the early spring crops, salad greens, arugula, baby kale, and carrots. It's not the flashy stuff yet. But it's real, it's fresh, and it was in the ground this morning.

The flashy stuff is coming. Heirloom tomatoes. Sweet Snacker peppers, the ones my customers' kids will eat straight off the plant. Basil you can smell from across the kitchen. All of it grown right here in Sedalia, about 10 miles away.

But here's the thing about small-farm produce: it goes fast. Harvest Members get first access to the order window every Thursday before the public. When tomato season hits, that early window is the difference between getting them and missing them.

The Community Harvest Hub opens mid-May. If you want to be first in line when the season really takes off, the Harvest Membership is how you lock that in.

Saw this and it stopped me...

I've spent over a decade learning what goes into growing food the right way. And what I've learned is just as much about what you don't put on it.

The industrial food system doesn't want you to see this. A guy in full protective equipment spraying your dinner.

Sandy's Way Microfarm -Sprister Family, I walk the fields in a t-shirt and shorts. No mask. No tank on my back. Because there's nothing on our crops that I wouldn't put on my own family's plate.

Certified Naturally Grown. 10 miles from Castle Rock. Season opens early May.

Most people only think about a farm when the food shows up. ๐Ÿ…

But right now, is when the real work happens โ€” prepping beds, building soil, getting seeds in the ground. The stuff nobody sees.

We open the farm every Friday & Saturday, 10 AMโ€“2 PM, for free farm tours at our farm in Sedalia.

Right now, you'll see a farm in early season mode โ€” germination trays, loads of transplants, freshly turned beds, and a greenhouse ready for starts. ๐ŸŒฑ

It's not picture-perfect. It's real. And honestly, this is the most interesting time to visit if you want to understand how local food actually works.

Bring the family. All ages welcome. ๐Ÿ‘จโ€๐Ÿ‘ฉโ€๐Ÿ‘งโ€๐Ÿ‘ฆ
