After a good summer rain here in the Northwest, If conditions are just right, you may be lucky enough to witness a summer flush of Chanterelles! Typically found in fall, these mushrooms contain significant amounts of vitamin D2 which helps the body to better absorb calcium. Chanterelles also contain vitamin A, iron, potassium, chromium and 8 essential amino acids.

It’s summertime in the Northwest! If you find yourself in the forest, keep an eye out for the Crown-Tipped Coral mushroom (Clavicorona pyxidata). It looks like it came straight from the ocean and tastes like it too!

This is our hard neck San Juan garlic! It’s cold hardy, disease resistant and produces well consistently. We are so thankful for our locally developed varieties!

A short clip of the stars of our garden— the mason bee! A native to the PNW and an incredible pollinator, even better than the beloved honey bee. These small blue fly-like bees pack these tubes with mud (hence “mason” bee) and their eggs.

Here's a link to an excellent resource on composting from the University of Illinois Extension -- biology of compost, troubleshooting, and more! This sunny day has us out and about flipping compost, cleaning the greenhouse, and generally super duper excited about being outside.

Today the chickens start their rotation through our field! Chickens accomplish a lot for the garden in early spring. They provide insect control, w**d suppression, and are fantastic at spreading organic fertilizer.

It’s that time of year again! Nature’s neosporin is ready for harvest! The buds of the black cottonwood tree (Populus trichocarpa) have many beneficial properties. The resin is antimicrobial, anti inflammatory, and an excellent expectorant tincture.

Pictured here is our field mulched with about 12inches of local marsh hay. We love deep mulch around here! Water retention, slow-release nutrients, insect and critter habitat... What's not to like?
