🐾 A Lifelong Canine Journey

For more than 25 years,

I've been immersed in the world of dogs, wearing multiple hats that define my love and commitment. From the breathtaking Siberian Huskies and majestic Alaskan Malamutes I've bred and raised, to the incredible journey of rescuing and rehabilitating dogs in need, every pawprint has shaped my understanding of unconditional love.

🌱 Holistic Care as a Way of Life

Over two decades ago, I embarked on a quest to discover holistic approaches to dog care. The wellness of our loyal companions extends beyond the physical realm, and my dedication to studying and implementing holistic practices reflects my unwavering commitment to their overall well-being. Through a harmonious blend of natural remedies, balanced nutrition, and mindful living, I've witnessed dogs not just surviving, but thriving.

šŸ¤ Rescuing Hope, One Dog at a Time

My heart beats for special needs dogs, and rescue has been a significant chapter in my journey. These remarkable souls inspire me every day, teaching me the true meaning of resilience and compassion. Their challenges don't define them; their spirit does. Through love, patience, and holistic care, I've seen miracles unfold.

šŸ  From Pet-Sitter to Soul-Healer

For over 13 years, I ran a pet-sitting business dedicated to end-of-life and special needs care. These furry friends became family, and each moment spent was a privilege. When it comes to your dog’s health, remember this: no matter how many specialists are involved, you are still the constant.
Their care may include holistic vets, cardiologists, neurologists, or even herbal consultants — but no one knows your dog’s energy, patterns, or spirit like you do.
Research. Ask questions. Read the labels. Learn the ā€œwhyā€ behind every supplement and medication. Because your voice matters just as much as theirs.
This little face is my daily reminder that advocacy and intuition belong side by side. 🌿🐾

As the veil grows thin, love feels a little closer — soft reminders, quiet signs, familiar energy.
Pause tonight and listen… connection never really leaves; it just changes how it speaks.

Have you ever flipped a dog food bag over and felt completely lost in the fine print? You’re not alone. Most pet parents don’t realize how much marketing language hides behind those labels.
Here are a few quick truths every dog lover should know:

Chicken mealā€ vs ā€œChickenā€ – ā€œMealā€ is a rendered ingredient that’s been processed at high heat. It can still be nutritious, but the quality depends entirely on the source — and most brands don’t say where it comes from.
ā€œNatural flavorsā€ – Sounds wholesome, right? Unfortunately, it’s often a vague catch-all term that can include artificial flavorings and animal digest (a by-product of rendering).
Fillers like corn, wheat, or soy – These ingredients aren’t inherently evil, but they’re often used as cheap bulk to increase protein percentages without offering true nutritional value.
Chicken Fat – This can sound alarming, but it’s not always bad. When sourced from quality poultry and preserved naturally (with Vitamin E, for example), it’s actually a healthy fat that provides energy and helps your dog absorb fat-soluble vitamins. The concern is when the label doesn’t say where it comes from or how it’s preserved.
Dried Beet Pulp – Commonly used as a source of fiber, but it’s also a leftover by-product of the sugar industry. In small amounts, it can aid digestion — but in excess, it’s a cheap filler that replaces more nutrient-dense fiber sources like pumpkin or veggies.
Choline Chloride – This one sounds scary, but it’s simply a synthetic form of choline, an essential nutrient that supports brain and liver health. It’s necessary — but it’s another reason transparency matters, because whole-food sources (like egg yolk or organ meats) are far more bioavailable.

Today, we pause to honor the dogs who have walked beside us and the unconditional love that continues to ripple long after they’ve gone.
Their presence lives on—in a quiet moment, a familiar scent, or the gentle rhythm of memory.
Light a candle. Whisper a thank-you. Let your heart remember. šŸ•ÆļøšŸ¾

Alongside lifestyle changes, holistic support can make a meaningful difference for dogs facing cognitive decline. Using a combination of food, herbs, and gentle supplements help to nurture the brain and body.
Some natural supports that can help include:
Omega-3s (for brain and heart health)
Lion’s Mane mushroom (neuroprotective support)
Reishi mushroom (calming and restorative) are just a few.
The quality of the mushrooms is key. I'll follow up in my next post about what to look for! šŸ„ā€šŸŸ«

When it comes to cognitive decline, sometimes it’s the little adjustments in daily life that make the biggest difference. With Gizzy, I’ve learned that comfort and routine are everything.
Here are some simple but important ways to support a senior dog with cognitive decline:
Keep a steady daily routine , use night lights for easier navigation in the dark, gentle evening walks to reduce restlessness. Lert them sniff! This is very good to keep the brain stimulated.
Create a quiet, cozy space to retreat when overwhelmed. I keep a blue light on for Giz in my room as that is her favorite place to retreat when her anxiety kicks in.
These changes may seem small, but together they can ease anxiety and confusion — giving your dog a greater sense of peace. Stay tuned for upcoming posts regarding natural supplements to ease the anxiety and restlessness.

Caring for senior dogs is a journey full of love… and sometimes heartbreak. One of the toughest challenges I’ve faced with my Gizzy, who’s almost 21, has been battling cognitive decline (often called canine dementia or CCD).
It can show up as:
-Pacing or circling
-Restlessness, especially at night
-Disorientation or confusion
-Changes in personality or interaction
I want to share this because if you’re seeing these signs in your own senior pup, you are not alone. In the next few posts, I’ll be sharing holistic approaches that have helped me support Gizzy through this stage of life.

There are bonds in this world that go beyond words, beyond time, beyond even what we can fully understand. The connection between a dog and the person who loves them as family—sometimes even more—is one of those rare, unbreakable ties.

Dogs don’t just live with us. They walk through life beside us, feeling every moment as deeply as we do. They sense our joys, our heartbreaks, and the unspoken emotions we try to hide. They love us in ways that are pure and unconditional, never asking for more than our presence in return.

For those of us who see our dogs as more than pets, but as true soul companions, we know this love is different. It’s waking up in the middle of the night just to check their breathing. It’s adjusting our lives to make theirs better. It’s the silent conversations, the shared glances, and the comfort of knowing that no matter what the world throws at us, they will always be there—steady, faithful, and unwavering.

And when we lose them, the grief is profound because the love was immeasurable. But even in loss, they never truly leave us. The imprint they leave on our hearts is forever, their spirit woven into the very fabric of who we are.

If you’ve ever been lucky enough to know this kind of love, then you understand—dogs are not just part of our lives; they are part of our souls.

Vetmedin (pimobendan) can be life-saving for dogs with certain types of heart disease, especially mitral valve disease (MVD) and dilated cardiomyopathy (DCM). It works as both an inodilator—meaning it helps the heart pump more effectively (positive inotrope) while also widening the blood vessels (vasodilator) to reduce strain on the heart. This combination improves circulation and helps manage congestive heart failure symptoms.

For those looking into holistic options, Hawthorn (Crataegus) is a well-known herbal remedy that supports heart function by improving circulation, strengthening the heart muscle, and regulating blood pressure. However, Hawthorn in its herbal form should not be given at the same time as Vetmedin since both work on the heart similarly, and combining them could lead to unpredictable effects.

That being said, the homeopathic form of Hawthorn, Crataegus, is a completely different preparation and can safely be used alongside Vetmedin with no interactions. Homeopathic remedies work on an energetic level rather than directly influencing heart function like the herbal form does.
