Instead of fighting the crowds for Minnesota pheasant opener I went north after grouse.
I took Bart and Porter for a quick hunt Thursday night, then hunted Friday and Saturday with pretty good success.
We're finding plenty of birds, and I'm getting shots at some.
Sunday morning I'm sitting in my camper listening to the rain, so today may be a wash out, and I might just head home.
It's been fun!

Red sun tonight as it sets. Darn humid out there, so I shortened the evening walk with Bart and Porter.

The dogs get plenty muddy in our backyard these days, especially Bart. There is plentiful mud in our cattail strip due to all the recent rain.

Livin' the good life! I loaded up the dogs, took the camper and headed to Beaver Creek Valley State Park yesterday afternoon. I set up camp, walked Bart and Porter, and got in some flyfishing.
There's no phone reception in the park, but I forgot my breakfast eggs at home so I went into town for provisions.

We had a good day to wrap up our Minnesota upland hunting season. I took each dog for a hunt and we bagged four ruffed grouse. All are big gray males. 😮
I saw 16 grouse and got shots at seven. Pretty good for late season.

Normally, this time of year I'd be taking day trips to Western Minnesota to hunt pheasants, but the crazy warm weather means there is no snow to force pheasants out of the grass, the cattail sloughs are wet and muddy, and the ice is unsafe for hunter and dogs.
So, instead, I headed north to chase grouse again. I did a short hunt with each dog this afternoon before the main event tomorrow. Unlucky Bart didn't get any flushes. ☹️ Porter flushed four and we managed to bag two. Not a bad start! 👍

I think the dogs are happy to be home. I hunted both for an hour today. Porter on private land in South Dakota, and Bart on a Minnesota WMA. I saw three roosters with Porter but they were well out of gun range. No shots fired.

We did better today. One jumped in the cattails between me and Joe Eischen and tried to backdoor us. I turned and shot it a split second faster than Joe.
Then Joe's dog Gus got on a cripple in the cattails but it got away from him. We let the dogs work and about a minute later Bart brought the broken wing rooster to me. It looks like Gus got his tail.
Joe shot another that Bart flushed toward him, so we all got some action.

Blanked! ☹️
Hunting buddy, Joe Eischen, was red hot early and limited out in under an hour.
But I had a combination of bad luck and bad shooting today. I walked 10 1/2 miles and had a couple of golden opportunities to connect on roosters, but couldn't make it happen.
Oh, well. 🤷‍♂️ Tomorrow is another day.

I didn't have as much luck today. I only fired two shots. One at this tight-sitting rooster, and a long one trying to help Joe bring down one he had hit.

And that's a limit! All three were shot off of the same public spot.
I've been hunting it for the better part of three decades and I don't know that I've ever seen this many pheasants late in the season.

The first hunt of the trip went well. Two roosters in the bag before lunch. I hope to get another before it gets too warm.

I love it when a plan works out!
I shot a limit of grouse today at the northwoods hotspot. Porter was the fortunate dog who got all the action.
I started by hunting Bart at a spot that's produced before, but we only had one flush there.
I saved the best area for after it warmed up. My truck said it was 41 degrees as I was leaving. Pretty crazy hunting in only a light polypro shirt under my vest and no gloves in late November.

The dogs and I drove to northern Minnesota to try some more grouse hunting.
I made an afternoon push with each dog before the main event tomorrow when it's supposed to get into the upper 30s.
Flushed 4 on Bart's shift but only shot one tree. Flushed 3 with Porter and shot one grouse and one tree.
Saw almost no grouse tracks. The birds were still in thermal cover - short conifers and thick grass next to mature trees.
I hope the warmer weather tomorrow gets them out to feed. I'm going to the area where I had a 20+ flush day and limited out in early November. 🤞

Porter got into a bunch of cockleburs. Good thing I had the dematting comb along. A few more encounters like that and his ears and chest will have a lot less long hair.

Fun afternoon hunt. Porter and I bagged the one rooster we got a shot at. Thanks for inviting me along David Maples! 👍
Afterward I hunted Bart on a nearby WMA. He did a great job on a runner flushed in close but, of course, it was a hen. The one rooster we saw there flushed far out of range.

My first time eating woodcock was a pleasure. I made it by basting in garlic-infused butter about 8 minutes until the breasts were 130 degrees and the thighs were about 175.
I found it delicious. Some say it tastes livery, but I didn't experience that at all. Supposedly the gamey/livery taste comes out if you cook it to well done.

Basting in garlic infused butter.

This morning's forecast said there was a 2% chance of snow this afternoon. That's a healthy 2%. 😂

Doing some deep snow mousing. Look at that tail go. 😂

We found some beautiful Springer-deep grass to hunt today. Unfortunately, it had received a bit of snow. 😏 We put a few roosters in the bag, but it sure wasn't easy.
