After decades spent hanging over a blazing fireplace, this magnificent kudu bull looked to be at the end of his days…

You’ve finally bagged that 2024 target buck that will be a stunner on your wall…. Now what? A few tips to make your taxidermist’s life easier and prevent added cost to you:

•Hang from the antlers if possible. A strap/chain around the neck will damage the hair, and hanging by the hindquarters can lead to blood stains.
• After caping, remove the head from the neck vertabrae and freeze as soon as possible until you can deliver to your taxidermist to skin. Lips, eyes, and ears are extremely delicate spots, and should be skinned by professionals.
•When in doubt, leave more skin!
•Ensure that your knife blade doesn’t pierce the epidermus. Every hole in the skin needs to be stitched, and can lead to irregular hair patterns.

Ever wonder why old taxidermy seems to have a longer lifespan than modern mounts? The answer: ARSENIC!

Prior to the 1980’s, arsenic was a commonly used insecticide by most taxidermists! Now that we know what we know about arsenic, there are much safer, non-carcinogenic, and organic methods of keeping your mounts clean and bug-free!

A popular taxidermy exhibit in Sioux Falls, S.D., was closed after the toxic substance was discovered laced throughout the specimens. Many lament the loss of the “works of art.”

LET’S TALK BUGS!

One of the most common issues in even the highest quality taxidermy mounts. Moths, dermestid beetles, and cockroaches LOVE to make their homes in your mounts. Due to improper hide prep or poor tanning practices, even the smallest traces of flesh remnants become a welcome meal for these common pests.

Early signs of insect infestation include loose hair, odors, and larvae shells below your mounts. Common household cleaners and insecticides can cause more damage than good to your trophies.
