Herman, the little goat that was left in our Big Goats Pen, has been to the vet, gotten a full checkup and is slowly adapting to life in the holler. She is still not happy to be separated from Benton, they’ve been shining through the fence. True uncle vibes. Her id tag infected her ear so she’s had antibiotics + pain meds. Our vet estimated she’s around 3-4 months old, very small for her age. We’ve been incredibly busy, between the new baby, our jobs and life in the holler. We’ll upload some new videos of her soon!

We’ve been a bundle of anxiety and stress since the days they announced The Storm. We had prepped for a normal KY winter, rainy days, some cold but nothing as extreme as -10 to -15F. It’s been all hands on deck, volunteers from all over that stood in the cold with us while we prepped and re-prepped every house and barn. Everyone outside has insulated shelters, they’re deep in straw (a CAVE basically) and most have extra heating pads we monitor from the house to be certain they’re safe. They all had double their usual meals and warm water, to keep them digesting and hydrated. The goats are sealed inside their house for now, much to their chagrin, because Benton loves standing outside in the snow 🙄
We have a trailer full of hay and straw bales, quarantine areas (The Garage🤣) are ready to go in case anybody needs to come in fast, chainsaw is ready, insulated bibs are on, tractor is on standby, we have generators and extra gas. We have rounds set up to go down and check on everyone once the temperature drops.
Everyone played all day outside because although drizzly and grey it was a lovely 46F. I’m glad they had today, because the next 3 days will be hard and it won’t be fun. I hate they’ll be confined to their houses, because I want everyone to do more than just survive. For the next few days, keeping them safe, warm and dry is going to be the only possible thing we can do. We keep telling each other it will be okay, we have to trust in the work we’ve done. Keep each other safe, share what you have and watch out for each other. Hunker down!

The sun came out after 2 weeks of rain, gray and mist. Here is Merle, stretching, yawning and just being cute.
If you’re new around here or if you’ve been here a while, I’d like to say: hi there, I’m Mariel. Cofounder and co-caretaker of every being here. I’ll be 34 next Monday, so Kent started a fundraiser for my birthday. I’m vegan for the animals, I work in legal aid and I volunteer the rest of my time to the sanctuary. The sanctuary has no paid staff, it’s all Kent and me here, so every dollar helps the animals here and expand the mission. Co-caretakers means I am also on the ground, not just a cute charming voice on video! I have learned building, fencing, tractor driving, pig flipping, hoof trimming, field first aid, how to avoid goat horns, give vaccines, carry hay& straw bales and picked up so, so, so much poop. Considering I was a city girl from Puerto Rico, I think I’ve come a long way 🤣I fight for people, I fight for animals and I will fight for the world we deserve.
I’m an open book, this sanctuary is an open book so if anybody ever has questions, wants to know more hit us up! I’m happy to answer any questions.
This sanctuary is our gift to all the animals here, as well as an invitation to anyone looking for a place to belong. So, if you have anything to spare, we would be grateful.
