The Mindful Equestrian

The Mindful Equestrian Performance coaching for equestrians wanting to achieve more positive results in all aspects of the Hunter/Jumper lessons and clinics.

Mindfulness is the practice of being present in every moment, not worrying about what was or what might be. A mindful rider is able to focus on what is happening right now with themselves and their horse, maintaining low stress and a higher ability for top performance. My clinics combine my 35+ years of experience in the hunter/jumper industry (AHSA/USEF, IHSA, Equine Science Professor Hunt Seat M

orrisville State College), mindfulness training and coach training and certification (International Coach Academy) to give riders strategies and tools for better mental focus and riding success. Each rider is considered individually and supported with the tools that will work best for them. The benefits from the performance coaching can also be carried into day to day life since we mirror the same issues in our riding that we do in other areas of our lives. Mindfulness then becomes a whole life practice and success tool. Performance coaching for riders of all disciplines who want more a positive experience whenever riding and competing. Group seminars available as well as private phone coaching sessions. Add a performance coaching seminar to your riding clinic. Over 35 years experience training hunters/jumpers and students.

I talk a lot about self-care, protecting energy, and knowing when it’s time to pause—so I’m practicing what I teach.

I’ll be taking a short break from social media and email over the holidays and will be back in a couple of weeks.

Wishing you a calm, restful holiday season!

Let go of self-judgment. Use your mistakes as lessons for new opportunities and growth. If you have a dream you have to get to work and not be afraid of the bumps in the road.

Ever see someone happy and think everything in their life is perfect? The truth is, everyone faces roadblocks and bumps in the road. But those who have a positive perspective learn to navigate life and keep moving forward, no matter what. They find opportunities to learn and grow from every experience, good or bad. Remember, happiness isn't about a perfect life, it's about a positive mindset.

I took a break from my podcast—and not because anything was “wrong.”

Life got full. My energy was stretched. And I gave myself permission to pause.

In this episode, I talk about burnout, self-care, and how knowing when to slow down is just as important as knowing when to push forward—especially in the horse world, where guilt around rest runs deep.

Pausing doesn’t mean quitting. Questioning doesn’t mean failing.

During a lesson a few years ago the riders and horses were just getting back into shape after a Christmas break. There were other riders in the ring and a couple of times there were close calls with the riders in the lesson feeling like they were being cut off. They got angry.. In actuality the close calls occurred because the riders in my lesson were only focused on what they were doing and not on the rest of the ring. They had a plan and were not going to make any adjustments. They couldn't make any adjustments as they were not looking around them. I stopped them and asked them to reflect on the cause of their problem and to look responsibly at what was going on. They admitted they needed to take responsibility for what was happening and not shift the blame to others. They realized that they had been as much or more at fault as the other riders in the ring. As they were more aware of the world around them they opened up to the horse more as well and stopped focusing on mistakes. and there were no more near misses. If they made a mistake they relaxed more and learned from them instead of dwelling on them.

So, isn't this all a good life lesson as well? The riders were blaming the others in the ring for their problems instead of owning the responsibility of the awareness and etiquette needed to navigate a ring. They understood that they needed not be on a fixed and unbending path afraid of change and failure. They allowed themselves the freedom of openness. If we all go through life with our eyes and our hearts open to what is around us with a flexible and responsible mindset we may go down paths that are more enjoyable, unexpected and interesting. We may make mistakes but we will also learn. If we stay open we will experience everything we do completely.

Take the lessons you have learned, apply them, make mistakes and learn and grow. Don't wait for more knowledge to take action. Apply the knowledge you know already as you continually learn more.

Instead of wishing you had more money, better abilities, a different ......fill in the blank, stay in this moment and work with what you have right now. That is how you will improve and move forward. Build on what you have instead of spending time dreaming about something "better."

I was looking through some old blog posts and found this. I have felt the same way recently. The business have grown since I wrote this, but I still get stuck, particularly in creating content. But I am much better skilled at moving through the stuck state!

"I have been very busy lately working on my new business. That busyness has made it hard for me to get my mind to the place it needs to be to write. . I have been trying hard to come up with an idea to write about for my blog. The harder I try, the tougher it is to keep my mind open to the possibilities. This morning, as I was thinking that I need to come up with something , I had a breakthrough! I decided to write about being stuck.

It is a pretty common occurrence as equestrians to get so caught up the final product and goals of riding that times of plateaus make you feel stuck and frustrated. You begin to think you are going nowhere and making no progress. Yet, that is the time of much of our learning. You struggle with mistakes and your wheels can spin but when you stay in action and keep trying new things, eventually you learn what will move you forward. Then the breakthroughs occur.

As I am writing this I am feeling my mind and thoughts begin to flow as I am getting unstuck. I am also being compassionate with myself and remembering all of the other things I have been busy doing. I may not have been writing, but I have been learning and doing new things. When we feel stuck in one place it is easy to ignore the progress we have made in other areas. By taking action to begin writing this article, I am moving forward. I have stopped waiting for the perfect article to take form in my mind. Instead, I just started writing and let go of the outcome.

Remember that when you get to that place in your riding where you think out are going nowhere. Just show up, be in the moment, take action, keep doing and pay attention to the lessons that are happening. Eventually you will get to the other side of feeling stuck!

Great day yesterday teaching a lesson to this fun group at Sablewood. Great job everyone! Barbara Ann Ferraro , Jen Harmon , Sandra Hemstreet ! Looking forward to getting back to regular lessons when the weather breaks!

Today I spent the day judging an IEA show at Hillcrest Stables. What a beautiful new facility they have added with two indoors attached by a beautiful viewing area, judge's room and more stalls. So well done! Of course I forgot to take pictures 🤦 Everyone rode well. It was a fun day! Thanks to Christy who announced and spent the day helping me. Thanks so much Kourtney Reals for inviting me to judge!
