Because, I am not supposed to be working in the greenhouse house right now, Oreo said it was cuddle time. Urm Chicken... we haven't snuggled since you were a hatchling.
Suburban Homesteading in the Metro St. Louis area with the Hill family.
Because, I am not supposed to be working in the greenhouse house right now, Oreo said it was cuddle time. Urm Chicken... we haven't snuggled since you were a hatchling.
Pictures from Tuesday the 13th of February in Arkansas... it was warmer and sunny.
Reminder - don't pull your quail out of the incubator immediately - you could cause any others who might be pipping to shrink wrap! wait for 48!
If you buy hatching eggs from us - the current cost is 5.00 a doz if picking up in St. Louis area, 8 plus shipping costs per doz if being shipped. We will start shipping in September.
Currently in the incubator is mostly a non-celedon, mixed coturnix quail hatch. We will have hatchlings available around the 18th. Contact for more information - as ever hatchlings are 3.00 for initial hatchling up to a week, after that, they increase by a dollar a week. until they reach the 6 week point.
Adult sets, 5 hens to 1 roo, 60.00 a set are available. These are Jumbo's vs Standard and lay eggs about 13-16 grams.
Happy Saturday! Annie here... we put a whole lotta quail in the incubator on the 22nd of January and we will candle on the 1st of Feb! These are mixed Jumbos mostly. Expected hatch date 2/8-10/23. The parents are NPIP sourced from Southwest Gamebirds, and I'll be NPIP by end of Feb.
I should have browns - Standard and Jumbo, Jumbo English White, and German Sparkleys - again Jumbo. I didn't put an egg below 14 grams in the incubator, so this hatch should give some decent-sized meat birds as well as egg layers.
I do not have celadons for sale in this batch - sorry folks, and over 100 are already spoken for! Please drop a comment here or note in our IM about your interest and we'll get back to you personally.
Standard Hatchlings are 3.00 ea the first week of life
Jumbo Hatchlings are 4.00 ea the first week of life.
Each from this batch go up 1.00 a week from the base price until 12 weeks, but I'll be honest - I don't expect them to be here by the time they reach 12 weeks old. This is a chance to get some amazing birds without having to ship eggs or hatchlings in the winter.

Quail Keeping on a dime? Yeah, you CAN do it! There are ways to find supplies and keep it affordable.
Quail keeping doesn't need to break the bank. You should have simple supplies on hand and keep them in an organized location so when you need them, you have ...
Tonight we put in a couple dozen Celadon eggs into the incubator... our goal is to see if we can increase our Silver line.
This coming January/February we intend to be inspected and tested, both for NPIP and AI so we're certified and can start mailing eggs out March/April to those who have voiced an interest in them.
Please note, our breeding will never be on the scale of some of the big quail houses out there. We are focusing on quality and not rushing the process for ourselves.
We do want to assure those who will purchase eggs from us for hatching that the parent birds are being carefully selected long before they get to egg laying and for those who want eggs for their plate - not only is the same quality there, but we won't be selling eggs smaller than 11 Grams.
Hey there! We hope everyone is having a great holiday season so far!
As many who follow us know, 1/2 or our operation traveled west in September and brought back hatching eggs from Southwest Gamebirds, it's been 5 weeks since they hatched and we can confidently say we've got a couple more 'Roos than we planned on keeping for our breeding lines.
While we could send them for a cold spa treatment and a stay at Freezer Camp, we'd like to offer them up for sale first at 9.00 each. The quickest way to improve your bloodlines is to add a healthy 'Roo or two and these boys will be crowing shortly (and are already producing a small amount of foam...)
Reach out to us to see if you want to bring one or both boys home to your flock. They are super sweet, healthy, fully feathered and already banded as male. Currently weighing in at over 8 ounces each, they'll likely grow up to 14 ounces maximum. Whether for breeders or pets only one or both, these fellas would be a charming addition to any flock.
It's been a little bit busy around Tiny Feather Homestead lately! We have a whole new batch of birds going out to Grow Out in the greenhouse on Tues/Weds of this week, when it's warmer by day, with a little bit of hay for these sweet little feathered friends to keep warm in and continue their adjustments.
We are excited to say that our Celadon lines are continuing to flourish and we're strengthening our English White Celedon birds with a new line infusion in the coming weeks (Waiting for these sweeties to get big enough to vent s*x them) and our hopes for an Italian/Golden Celadon line are continuing to move forward.
Our NPIP enrollment form has been submitted, but we've decided to wait until after Christmas to get our testing done - as there won't be a risk of AI at high a level. Our Goal for spring is to be able to ship eggs to those already on our waitlist.
We're going to do some targeted hatches over the next couple of months, but nothing large scale as we're refining our lines and trying to focus on building up the healthiest birds we can.
There are days y'all that we just...
Well - take a look. This is Annie's TikTok, and what our dog brought in today.
Our dog usually retrieves wayward quail... she doesn't hunt and dig for retreating moles...
It's always fun when a new egg layer starts giving us eggs...
hey - it's easier to count quail eggs by 5's isn't it?
Our production of eggs is going to be down for a while we've sent many young hens off to new homes this weekend, we're cleaning up our cages, looking at any repairs due to normal wear and tear, or upgrades, and sending some extra roo's to freezer camp. This means labeling everything and getting super organized.
BECAUSE...
Our plans are to be NPIP certified this month if we can, and by the first of December, the quail hatchlings we have in brooders now will go out to their grow-outs and eventual breeding cages. We are looking at being able to ship Jumbo English Whites, Jumbo Browns/Pharohs, Italians, Rosettas, and some specials as eggs starting in spring!
Why not as soon as we get our NPIP? Well to be honest, while our breeding lines are beautiful, we are waiting for some of the lines we've brought in from other NPIP breeders to grow up and see what they make with what we have, and how hardy they are. We breed for temperament, health, and color both of eggs and feathers. We want to make sure that we're not sending out eggs that will turn into mean birds or are unhealthy ;)
That -and- the US Postal service is heck on hatching eggs in winter... eggs stuck in a blizzard due to airport or road shutdowns can be damaged from extreme cold, just as bad as those shipped in extreme heat, and we don't want to have your eggs arrive in a cryogenic state ;)
We have new babies! Our hatchlings are growing fast and the new Texas A&M descended babies are HUGE for 2 week olds...
Got Eggs?
Come Join us tomorrow - 9am at Klucker Hall in Shiloh IL
(yeah - we know - and that name is for real!)

We've been super busy lately but haven't forgotten y'all - have you checked out the webpage at tinyfeather.net recently? It's had and will be getting more information soon! Baby Quail pic for your pleasure!
While we're in the process of breeding / raising larger quail, there's something to be said for how perfect the processing on this turned out!
We don't waste the quail that just don't grow big enough to be breeders, and every single one is honored for their place in the wheel of the year, and circle of life.
Now the hard part... how do I cook it and the 29 others just processed. So many options!
Not our main product... but we just dropped 41 chicken eggs into an incubator. We'll know how many chicken chicks we have for sale in a few weeks.
Ok so we definitely have fallen behind in our updating here, but this fall has us getting cages ready for sale, building new cages and of course hatching new and cute little fuzzy Coturnix Quail.
Things here are going wonderful and we will see a return to the green house (in their cages of course) for our quail this winter!
Stay tuned to the website as we'll be posting information on our quail lines available for hatching eggs.
Standard Coturnix farm fresh eggs $4.00 dozen - eggs 9-12 grams. Our quail are happy quail and kept together so there are no definitive non-fertile eggs. They can be eaten or hatched. We get 24+...
We currently have a surplus of eggs, as our birds have been enjoying the nicer weather. So... the eggs that others haven't picked up (4.00 a doz for sale) are going to go into quiche and mayonnaise. (Not our recipe)

Simple & delicious Mayonnaise made with quail eggs. Better than the store bought stuff plus no salmonella risk from raw chicken eggs that go in most homemade mayo. There are four favorite condiments in my

Checking on our grow out cage, mostly our Italian line, but some Pearl and English Whites. #coturnixquail.
We put 64 eggs from our own birds in the incubator this weekend. In 2 weeks we will go to lockdown, and sometime between the 18th - 21st of this month we'll see a new hatch. What do we expect in it this time? Italian's and Fees' and maybe a few Pearls... these birds have chevrons on their feathers, and we're looking forward to seeing what hatches this time! This hatch has had no shipped eggs... we'll see if there's a difference.
It's amazing what a week will do... Stick around to the end if you missed the white quail hatchlings using their feeder for a pass-through tunnel.
110 Coturnix Quail went into the incubator on February 23. On March 9 we candled the eggs and our Final count was 91 that we were pretty sure were hatchable. These went into what those who hatch their own eggs call "Lockdown." Lockdown means you remove the motorized rails that the eggs are turned on, and you set a non-slip grip surface down under the eggs. We will share this on and off all day as long as we know folks are watching! Please share this with your friends!
Building out a greenhouse takes time, we have almost everything for inside, we just need to set it up. And another 12 eggs today!
