Poppy, a sweet and spirited 5-month-old German Shepherd pup, started life in the wrong hands — sold by a backyard breeder to a family with no dog experience, living in an apartment with two small children. Overwhelmed and unsure what to do, the family turned to El Dorado County German Shepherd Rescue for help. Thankfully, we were able to step in, place her with a foster, and give her the structure, training, and support she needed to thrive.

Poppy — now known as Kaida — is living her very best life in South Lake Tahoe with her forever family… the same one who adopted Chance! Chance, an 8-month-old German Shepherd, is the kind of dog you don’t forget — young, energetic, and incredibly smart. Sadly, he found himself in a high-kill shelter with no outlet for his drive, and like many working-line dogs, the stress of confinement quickly became a serious risk. Thankfully, an EDCGSR volunteer stepped in just in time to pull him from danger.

It only took one pack walk and an overnight stay for everyone to know — Chance had found his perfect match. Today, he’s living his best life alongside his BFF Kaida, proof that the right home can change everything. At El Dorado County German Shepherd Rescue, we don’t just find homes — we find the right homes. Meet Autumn! This stunning 2.5–3-year-old girl is full of life and ready for her next adventure. Autumn is a high-energy, active pup who’s always on the move and always up for some fun. She loves to play and has gotten along well with both male and female dogs she’s met.

Whether she’s your one-and-only or joining a home with another playful companion, Autumn thrives when she’s around people and pups who match her zest for life. She knows her basic commands like “sit,” “down,” and “place,” and walks nicely. Autumn is also crate trained and working on her house manners—which, with a little consistency, she'll pick up in no time!

Today, we gather our hearts to celebrate the incredible life of our rescue’s beloved mascot, Buddy.

Buddy’s journey with us began in the most unexpected way. He was found at the Port of Stockton—feral, free-spirited, and fearless, chasing rabbits while being chased by coyotes. As a German Shepherd rescue, we were surprised when a good Samaritan reached out about a 25-pound Papillon-Corgi mix. But from the moment he entered our world, it was clear: Buddy was meant to be part of our pack.

It took a full year of patient, daily love from our dedicated volunteers before Buddy was ready to be handled. But once he opened his heart, he never stopped giving. He became the face—and soul—of our rescue. The first to greet visitors, both human and canine, Buddy brought calm, joy, and a quiet confidence that only he could offer.
He lived an extraordinary life—full of beach adventures, river swims, Lake Tahoe escapes, and always surrounded by his loyal German Shepherd crew, whom he somehow managed to lead with ease and charm. His story was so special, it became the first from our rescue to be published in Our Furry Friends by Cindy Ruth and friends, available on Amazon.

While our hearts are heavy with the loss of our little guy, we are filled with gratitude for the 15 beautiful years he graced this world. Buddy touched the lives of everyone he met, simply by being himself. His legacy lives on in the memories he made, the lives he changed, and the love he gave so freely.

Ariya is a 1.5 year old German Shepherd who arrived at Yolo County Animal Services as a stray in January. Everyone thought with her good looks, playful and easy temperament, and high intelligence, she would be snapped up quickly, but she's had almost no interest!

Ariya is fantastic with everyone she meets - human or canine. She is friendly and submissive with other dogs. She knows sit, shake, and down, and is very food motivated, so could easily learn a lot more.

Young and playful, Ariya hopes she can find a family that will keep her entertained. In thanks, she will be the best girl and give lots of cuddles.

Ariya is spayed, microchipped, and up-to-date on vaccines and flea control. Her adoption fee is $50 and she is available at Yolo County Animal Services in Woodland. Harley update! This brave girl recently attended our Claws for Paws event with her amazing fosters—and she crushed it! From a shy pup rescued from a hoarding situation to confidently navigating crowds and soaking up the love, Harley continues to show us just how far she’s come.

She’s about 4–5 years old, adores people, and is so ready for a home to call her own. Harley prefers to be the only dog in your life—and she promises to fill your heart all by herself.

Flynn has been patiently waiting for his forever home, and he’s ready to meet his perfect match! This happy, exuberant boy always wears a grin because he loves people. At 1-2 years old and around 80 lbs, Flynn is a handsome GSD/Pitbull/Husky mix with a stunning red sable coat. He’s playful, loving, and super smart—already potty trained and knows sit, down, place, and wait. He’s working hard on his manners and loose leash walking, plus he’s great in the car and always up for an adventure! Flynn gets along well with other dogs and is eager to find a family to love.

Neutered, microchipped, vaccinated, and heartworm negative—Flynn is ready to go! Could you be the one he’s been waiting for?

Hi! I'm Archer. I'm a 3-4 month old German Shepherd mix looking for my forever home. I was adopted by a great couple from a shelter but they realized I was just too much dog for them. In my first home I lived with cats. But now, I'm in a foster home awaiting my forever home. I live with 2 other German Shepherds and get along with any of the dogs I have met so far, large and small.. I was even introduced to a pig. So far I have also been great with the children I've met. I know Sit, Down, and I wait at thresholds. I am crate trained and I sleep through the night.

I can walk nicely on a loose leash, I ride well in the car and I am very treat motivated so I'm really easy to train. My forever home needs to be an active person or family with GSD or working dog experience and puppy experience or someone commited to working with a trainer to help me be the best I can be. If you are looking for an amazing pup with all kinds of potential ...it's me! I'm still a pup so I really need someone commited to putting in the time and energy I need to grow into the best dog ever.
