The progression of Sunny 🌞

This little dog… first time I met her was in Capitol Hill at Cal Anderson park, the unofficial dog park in that neighborhood. With dogs running around rampant, I saw first hard just how INSANE this dog acted on leash around other dogs. Screaming, barking, lunging, choking herself at the end of the lead… all while her parents are like “what the f*ck??”

We started with some lessons to teach basic handling skills and learning how dogs learn/pick up skills. Her reactivity got better, but there was only so much her owners could do to get her so far in her training.

Which is why they invested in a 3 week board & train for Sunny. During her time here, she’s been exposed to dogs of all personalities and sizes. She finally learned not all dogs are out to get her, and she learned important social skills when it comes to running with a pack!

Sunny has come SO far in her training just half way through her program, and I’m excited to see what this last week & a half will look for her!

Oh I’m going to tell them NO if they are digging through the trash or running towards heavy traffic. Or if they try to lunge and bite a passing dog.

If you’re not telling them no, you’re saying yes.

You can’t be like Jim Carrey in Yes Man. It doesn’t work like that. You cannot say yes to everything your dog does… they ARE A DOG!!!!! They are going to make poor decisions because they don’t know any better. YOU need to give them guidance and be black & white with them about their behaviors.

Don’t let the environment teach them a lesson (example: finding out cars suck from getting hit by one). You should teach it to them these lessons in a safe and controlled way, tell them no when they do something stupid. It’s not going to ruin your relationship with them. It might just save their life one day.

This summer, I was given the prestigious honor of walking Mr Frodo Baggins down the aisle at his owners wedding. 🥹🌳

When I was told it was a Lord of the Rings themed wedding, and that Frodo needed his Sam… I was beyond thrilled, crying happy tears of joy that one of my clients trusted me enough to be part of such a special day. Frodo and his owners had completely 6 private lessons with me nearly two years ago and he’s just as much of a rockstar as he was then.

Thank you so much for letting me be a part of Frodo’s life and be his Samwise. You guys are truly the best. Congratulations 🎉🍾

Buck the beagle is half way through his board & train with Nirvana K9 🐾

His owners training goals included neutrality towards dogs & humans while on walks, learning the art of doing nothing, and be able to recall him on & off leash!

Buck will be splitting his time between me and one of our expert training specialists, Kerri McClelland, while I head to New York for an amazing opportunity to learn the ins and outs of business with Tom Davis from Upstate Canine Academy 😁

I am SO excited to bring another trainer on to the Nirvana K9 team! And to learn more about how to better my business so I can help MORE dog owners.

Let's talk about this photo. It's cute, except it's not. I see a dog who cannot get up without telling the child to get off. How do you think a dog is going to do that?

The 7 Golden Toddler Dog Rules:
#1: If a dog walks away from you, you DO NOT FOLLOW.
#2: Always leave room for the dog to walk away from you.
---that right there is 90+% of dog bites eliminated---
#3: We do not climb on the dog.
#4: We do not grab or pull on the dog.
#5: We do not hit or throw anything at the dog.
#6: We do not touch the dog's food.
#7: We do not go into the dog's kennel.

I promise these are not overly difficult concepts for littles, nor will they rob a kid of their bond with the family dog. It will deepen that bond, while keeping everyone safe.

"Oh, it looks like Moose is walking away from you. She is saying she wants a break. Let's play with this instead!"

"It's Moose's dinner time! Let's give her space to enjoy her yummies."

"That is Moose's room(kennel) and only she is allowed to go in there."

"If Moose wanted a break, could she walk away from you right now? No she really couldn't. Let's move away from the play house. You can keep playing but now she can leave when she wants a break."

In conclusion, ***parent your child or your dog will do it for you, and you will not like how they do it.***

Today was the most bittersweet day I’ve had in my career as a dog trainer. I handed Nyla off to her new fosters 😭❤️

I am so grateful, happy, *relieved*… that she will be with a couple who truly cares about her well being and maintaining her training. Thank you from the literal bottom of my heart 😭

And thank you to all of my followers and supporters. This would not have happened with you guys. ❤️🙏🏼 be good to your new fosters (hopefully forever family!) Nyla!
