Setting boundaries for your pup🛑🛑🛑
Were you one of those kids who always got their cheeks pinched by an admiring aunt or uncle? It’s the worst!! Kids are obviously cute, but isn’t there a less invasive way to say hi??
Dogs are like these kids, but they never grow out of the cute stage, so people are always wanting to “pinch their cheeks.”
Sometimes, your dog is calm and comfortable and loves the attention. But other times, we as pet owners needs to know how to step in and protect their personal space.
Knowing how and when to intervene will help your dog trust you. When a dog can trust their pack leader, they are less likely to become “reactive” to other dogs and humans.
So… how do you tell someone to back off, even when you agree that your dog is the cutest??
We recommend matching the intensity of the excited dog lover.
If they simply start to engage and talk to your dog, you have every right to politely cut them off and explain he or she is in training would appreciate no attention (i.e. touch, talk, or eye contact). If they are a true dog lover, they should understand!
If you have a bolder enthusiast, you may need to physically step between he or she and your dog to stop the uninvited attempt of contact. Remember, these people have good intentions, but the safety and security of your dog comes first!
We know this can be uncomfortable in the moment, but the pay off you get of your dog’s trust is absolutely invaluable.
Good luck, let’s shut down those cheek pinchers!

Let talk about common issue that many of us face with our canine friends - barking at the doorbell.
First and foremost, it’s important to understand that dogs bark for a reason. In this case, it’s likely due to their instinctual warning that something is new and different in the area. The key is to come in as a pack, leader, and communicate with your dog that this is not a threat, and there is no need for an alarm.
To address this behavior, it’s crucial to establish yourself as the pack leader and take charge of the situation. When the doorbell rings, remain calm and assertive. Your energy will be felt by your dog, and it’s important to convey a sense of control and confidence. If you start to yell and raise your voice energy, you are encouraging the behavior by joining in on the behavior. It’s not important how quickly you get them quiet, but HOW CALM YOU CAN BE when asking them to discontinue the barking.
Next, redirect your dog’s attention away from the door and towards you. Use a command, such as touch to redirect their attention to you instead of what’s going on outside of the window. However, you need to practice the command without the stimulus. If your dog is not reliable with the command then they are not over threshold, there is no chance once they are aroused and barking.
Additionally, you can desensitize your dog to the sound of the doorbell by gradually exposing them to it. Start by ringing the doorbell while they are leashed and interrupt with calm leash pressure when they react. Hold the leash pressure until they not only stop barking, but also drop their energy level. Dogs learn when you release pressure if you release the pressure prior to their energy level coming down, the likelihood of them returning to barking is much higher.
Remember, it’s important to be patient and consistent when training your dog. Practice when there is not somebody at the door, so you will not be rushed and impatient with your dog to get calm so you

We’ve gotten a lot of questions about behavior issues that need fixing. But before we tackle those, we wanted to share some tips on how to keep your dog from developing those undesirable behaviors in the first place.
We all know you need to socialize your pup from a young age. But doing it in a way that helps your dog develop into the balanced companion you want them to be is crucial.
You can’t just throw them out into the big wide world and expect them to know how to handle everything!
Imagine you bring your dog into a store, and they feel over excited from all the stimulation. Then, people start coming up to your pup to pet them and admire all the cuteness.
Well, your pup just learned that they will get attention if they act overexcited in public. Now the next time you go out, they are going to get over excited again because that is what got them attention last time (in their mind, at least).
Your puppy can only start interacting with the environment once they are completely neutral to it. Then, they can receive rewards for calm behavior from you or a dog-loving friend. However, it may take multiple visits to a new environment before your puppy is ready to meet and greet. Be patient with them, and trust that working with them and their responses will pay off in the future.
Remember to always reward calm behavior to create a well-behaved and enjoyable companion🐶

Does your dog get too excited during meal times? Carly shared some of her top tips to tackle this issue. We summarized here, but if you want to see the full video you can head to our Youtube, linked in our story today!
⁃ Before allowing your dog to eat, wait until they are physically and mentally calm (patience is key!)
⁃ If their head is perked up, they’re panting or pacing around, or they are staring at you very intently, they aren’t calm enough to eat yet!
⁃ Use your dog’s “place” or a crate …
⁃ When your dog is calm, grab the food bowl and give it to them rather than giving a release command
⁃ Be consistent! Wait until they are calm every time

Last week Anne asked us how to properly socialize her pup while still keeping them safe before completing vaccinations.
Carly (and her peacock!) want to break up some common misconceptions about socializing.
1. You don’t have to have an interaction to be socializing. In fact, coming face to face with a new dog or human in a high energy situation can overwhelm your puppy and be counter productive if they aren’t ready!
Holding them calmly and letting them take in the sights and sounds still counts as socializing and can even help make it a better experience for your pup.
2. Wait until a puppy is completely calm (or practically indifferent) before having a physical interaction with a new friend. This teaches them not to get over excited. Now, you won’t have the dog who barks and jumps every time someone comes to visit, or pulls your arm off when you walk past a dog on walks. Instead, they’ll be happy and comfortable meeting someone new.
3. Vaccinated dogs can still spread parvo, even if they don’t seem sick. So if you found a calm, friendly dog you want your pup to meet, make sure they haven’t been to any dog parks or other high traffic dog areas recently.
4. Going on walks can be done safely (sometimes all four can be on the floor). Parvo is of course a real and scary threat. But, if you find a quiet street and walk in the middle of the road only, it’s very unlikely your pup will come into contact with the virus. And, you’ll be raising a more confident pup who has leash skills!

Curriculum exposure today was this fun dancing and singing cactus.
When exposing pups to anything new that causes a fear reaction it’s important to work puppies through the fear. In this video you can see the puppies first fearful reaction and then trust me when I call them TOWARDS the object that they fear.
Empower your pups. Don’t coddle! Let them know that they are safe and brave enough to move forward and explore.
There are exceptions to this rule however. If your puppy is shutting down or seemingly overly fearful it’s important to stop the exposure activity and try again another day.
