Unpredictable Rewarding: This is how we build real-world reliability. 💪🏼

Varying the timing and amount of rewards activates anticipation in the brain, which increases motivation and strengthens learning over time. This is why well-trained dogs don’t need constant reinforcement to succeed — they stay engaged because they might earn it.

In dogs (and humans), dopamine is released most strongly in anticipation of a reward, not when the reward actually happens.

When a dog expects that a reward might come — but doesn’t know exactly when or how big — the brain stays engaged and motivated. This is why behaviors trained with variable reinforcement tend to be more persistent and enthusiastic.

Reactivity work isn’t just about stopping outbursts — it’s about helping dogs learn to regulate their nervous systems in real time. 💛

Willow and Riggs practiced co-regulation today: lying on separate cots, divided by a short wall and guided by their trainers so they can notice each other without feeling overwhelmed.

Little moments like these build huge emotional resilience.
