Ain’t this the truth!

One of the biggest frustrations clients (and even trainers) face is that the learning process isn’t linear with horses. Training will have setbacks, plateaus, and periods of rapid progress.

While rapid progress is always the most exciting phase, there is something to be learned even from the “less awesome” phases. Sometimes setbacks or periods with little progress are helpful not because they are enjoyable, but because they help us humans diagnose an issue with the horse or learn that maybe they are better suited for a different job.

One of the best ways to avoid frustration with the process is to keep an open line of communication with your trainer.

It’s that time of year!

It’s hard to believe it’s already December! Although we are blessed to have great weather year-round here in SoCal, we are starting to enter the rainy season. So, when the weather isn’t great for outdoor riding, we focus on indoor activities - like the TheraPlate. Here at KWSH, making sure your horse is in shape and feeling their best is a top priority! 💪🏼

“I think about decisions in three ways: hats, haircuts, and tattoos.
Most decisions are like hats. Try one and if you don’t like it, put it back and try another. The cost of a mistake is low, so move quickly and try a bunch of hats.
Some decisions are like haircuts. You can fix a bad one, but it won’t be quick and you might feel foolish for awhile. That said, don’t be scared of a bad haircut. Trying something new is usually a risk worth taking. If it doesn’t work out, by this time next year you will have moved on and so will everyone else.
A few decisions are like tattoos. Once you make them, you have to live with them. Some mistakes are irreversible. Maybe you’ll move on for a moment, but then you’ll glance in the mirror and be reminded of that choice all over again. Even years later, the decision leaves a mark. When you’re dealing with an irreversible choice, move slowly and think carefully.”

I loved this characterization of life choices and just had to repost!

I can’t tell you how often I worry over “my” kids - horses and people included. Lately, our area has been threatened by fires and my thoughts are consumed by my animals and their people. This job is so much more than teaching people to ride, it’s a commitment to another living being and the dreams they carry.

I saw this quote and loved it! It reminded me that communication is so important to the trainer/client relationship. If you have a hope or a dream with your horse, don’t keep it to yourself. If you are struggling with something with your horse, don’t suffer in private. Tell your trainer the good and the bad. We are here to help both people and horses. But, despite all our amazing qualities, we can’t read your mind. Don’t let your unspoken expectations or struggles become future resentments.
