So, hands down, Spirit's Place is one of the hardest working & dedicated organizations around and they do incredible work with very little support... They are the "boots on the ground" dealing with the forgotten cats, the thrown away cats and the cats that society often misunderstands....
Spirit's Place is focused on educating everyone who will listen about how we can all pull together and help end the needless suffering of so many cats in this state. This post is a glimpse into their world... And it's just the tip of the iceberg.
Please read and share their post... Because no single rescue, shelter or good samaritan has the funding or capacity to save all the unwanted cats, but working together.... We ALL can make a difference.
In animal rescue, heartbreak is inevitable. The daily requests for help can be overwhelming and, at times, can be defeating. For this reason, we celebrate our successes, holding these stories close to our hearts. But we also take time to reflect on our losses, to pay respect to a life lost because we know that every life matters. Their stories will not be forgotten. Our team works day and night to help as many cats in need as possible. We talk about TNR, spay/neuter, colony management and access to affordable veterinary care every chance we get because this is the only way we are going prevent suffering.
A couple of years ago, a couple from Dexter reached out to us after coming across a stray cat who was in need of help. They called her Brownie Girl and, after some investigating, discovered she was abandoned when her previous owners moved. Simply left behind, fending for herself for who knows how long. We assisted them in providing Brownie Girl with basic veterinary care and over time, Brownie Girl came to trust them, living a happy, safe life. When this couple recognized the suffering, they didn’t turn away, hoping someone else would help…they took action. One simple act that saved a life. Sadly, despite the love, the attention and the effort, Brownie Girl passed away a few weeks ago after being diagnosed with a fast moving cancer. Her people are mourning her loss and what could have been. But if not for them, her suffering would have been silent, unnoticed. They gave her a name, a home, and most importantly, the space to be herself. Our hope for every community cat.
Two weeks ago, one of our older kittens became very ill and was rushed to the emergency clinic where he was diagnosed with FIP. Our team coordinated the appropriate care and management to give him a fighting chance. Sadly, despite our team’s best efforts, he died days later. This kitten came from a colony we’re working on in Waterville. There were dozens of cats on this site and sadly, he’s not the only cat from this site to die. It is in this setting that the occurrence of FIP and other illnesses are more likely; the setting of uncontrolled breeding, of inbreeding, of ill cats reproducing. Access to affordable spay/neuter services and knowledge of TNR is limited in that area and, as a result, there are dozens of cats in need of help. Our team has been diligent in our TNR efforts in Waterville with the hope of ending the suffering. Make note, we have spayed/neutered every cat in that colony…no cat is left behind, unfixed.
While these stories are heartbreaking, we share them to bring attention to the plight of these street cats. We shared the stories of two cats but there are many more. Suffering is endless but it is also preventable. Our team is small and we can’t do it without community members stepping up and taking action. In honor of the ones we’ve lost, let’s work together to end and prevent the suffering.
One simple act can change everything.
