Sorry not sorry.
If you can't recall your dog or your dog cabt follow basic commands when distracted then please don't allow the dog off leash.

A crazy, foreign concept 🤯

Everyone is getting ready to go home this weekend! I'll be off work for a little over a month (for the heavy training, I'm still doing refresher courses and boarding)
However, I'm playing with this group on and off today and I get such a feeling from working more than one at a time in a leisure setting.
I don't do this often bc there is no need unless your in a multiple dog household, most are not, but I am so mine get the default practice! 😆

I may or may not miss the dogs....

I have been sending out emails for inquiries from the past few weeks. If I missed anyone please let me know asap! I'm filling up fast.

I love constantly getting these updates on past clients. It makes me feel so good knowing I changed a life.... even in a small way.

Evee never could even go outside without shutting down from fear so this was a huge win!

I love how many people tell me the dog is still the same dog but different. I do not ever want a dogs personality to change.

I hear this nonsesne from all sides of the training world. If the dog is properly trained, and properly reinforced, they will perform as desired sans tools—if you’ve trained them properly.

For balanced trainers it’s primarily a ge***al wagging argument used to try to deride the competition, and to elevate the admonisher’s sorely fragile ego. For positive only/force-free trainers, it’s primarily an ideological stance, or a gross demonstration of ignorance.

Regardless where it emanates from, the ones most negatively impacted are the innocent owners (and their dogs) who are looking to these so-called experts for guidance. And so after hearing repeatedly that having to rely on tools is a sign of either poor training or a poor moral compass, owners often view the very practical, and the very useful reliance on tools as a sign of their own failures. And so they feel compelled to try to get away from them as soon as possible.

As I’ve said many times, the goal shouldn’t be to get rid of tools, the goal should be to get rid of the problems. And for most owners and dogs those problems are best curtailed and best kept at bay by continued use of the tools which best serve the desired goals.

Are there exceptions? Are there dogs who will happily not push back against any of the rules once they know what’s expected and once they’ve been trained with lots of repetitions and diligence? Of course. Just like there are people who never speed, never roll through a stop sign, and who would never think to push back against any rules once they know them. But these are indeed the exceptions.

For most dogs, and for most people, the tools of authority (cops, laws, and the legal system for us—tools, training and owners who lead for dogs), are a necessary bulwark against our own desires and proclivities of the moment, which would often see either species—fully knowing whats expected and “proper”, make very different decisions.

Which brings us to something else I’ve written about often: knowing and doing are two very different things. It’s a simpleton who assumes that an animal (dog or human) with their own desires, drives, and unique personalities—would “do” simply because they “know”.

Put very simply, if we cannot get the highly intelligent, morally aware human to do what’s right without the threat of undesired consequences delivered by an authority figure, how on earth do we expect something equivalent or better from our dogs? Our dogs who are far less intelligent and where morals have no influence on behavior—which means they’ll be even more inclined to be opportunistic, self-serving, and impulsive. What foolish nonsense is it that would encourage owners to choose a far more problematic, stressful, freedom-diminishing, and dangerous tool-less path?

Enough listening to the “experts”. Find the tools which best help you and your dog, learn how to use them properly, and then, without shame, guilt, or self-judgement—use them as often and as long as they serve and improve you and your dog’s life together.

There is nothing natural about large numbers of unfamiliar dogs partaking in high-intensity activity in a dog park, and this shouldn’t be the benchmark for a social dog. If your dog is not their best in such an environment, you are not doing anything wrong. 👏👏 There is nothing wrong with your dog. 👏👏 Your dog is normal. 👏👏

10 years ago, we didn’t get cattle dogs in our shelters here in BC often. Now, you’ll find one or a mix almost always available for adoption. They’ve gone from purpose-bred farm hands to condo living in a generation. On top of that, they come equipped with software that isn’t welcome in most homes.

I work with more cattle dogs than any other breed, and many face rehoming, relinquishment to a shelter or much worse. They are often trained with punishment and force by backyard trainers who don’t understand them and are a high risk for poor welfare.

Don’t be fooled by Instagram VS reality. These are fun, athletic dogs and are wonderful to work with. But they are not always a good fit for a novice handler.

My recommendation, if you’re not committed to working with and sharing a home with a dog who is prone to reactivity, dog/dog issues and a strong inclination to use their mouths would be to adopt an older dog as their behaviour is developed and more predictable, allowing you to be more sure of what you’re taking on.

Cattle dogs need a lot of active socialization and training as pups and adolescence can be particularly long and gruelling with these dogs as their breed behaviours come to fruition.

They are one of my top favourite breeds, and I love everything about them, but that does not mean they are a good fit for everyone.

If you are struggling with your cattle dog, reach out. You’re not alone!

I love feedback. Evee left a 7 week training program over 2 weeks ago and this is the result.
I'm talking severe anxiety. Fear aggression to the point of rehoming her.
I'm so glad to be able to make such a difference for people!

Accountability... a word you will hear me say a lot. Your dog knows the training. They know what's expected. They also know when you don't mean what you say.

For example, when you tell you dog to sit and they look at you and do nothing. You tell them again to sit and again they do nothing. You walk away for any reason... the dog has now learned they do not have to follow a command because you don't actually mean what you say.

If you don't mean what you say and have Accountability over your actions and your dog then the training from me is done and they are retrained to your new way of not doing what you say.

Do not let your judgement be clouded by the stigma that goes with E-Collars. When used correctly by a professional and combined with positive reinforcement, an e-collar can be an amazing training tool. An experienced trainer and a remote collar can see the most prey driven dog recalling very enthusiastically, and crucially, reliably!

Reshare to fight the stigma 💪
