Got this beautiful chick tonight. Snuck in at 4:18.
She had her harem of doe with her. She got curious of this other chick sitting on a log and took 3 too many steps towards me. They tried skirting by me when I wasn’t looking up the hill about 85 yards. Between two tight trees she was facing me straight on. Took the shot, saw the others run off and was stunned.
So I got up and walked straight up the hill where she was standing. Sure as 💩 there was my chick. Right where she was standing. I’ll find the exit hole tomorrow when I skin her. If you look close you’ll see the blood just over her cowlick on her brisket, that’s the entry… dead center. Shes Gorgeous! Can’t wait to mount her with my big 10!
He has white cheek freckles similar to her beauty mark.

Proper degreasing takes weeks.

DIY euros are great for someone to do at home, however if you’re sending your precious trophies out to be cleaned, the least you should know is it takes weeks to extract the grease (marrow) from the bone. This can only be achieved by a hot bath at a controlled temperature.
If someone else is doing your trophy’s in just a few days your white skull will be yellow in 6 months to a year.

Do your research folks! Google is your friend.

Euros are a hot option this year! If you have a skull you need professionally cleaned, degreased and whitened… give me a call!

Good luck to all going afield Saturday.

A couple things to remember when you plan to mount your deer.

1. Do not cut the throat, shoot your deer in the heart to put it down.
2. If you have to drag it, protect the hide and fur by dragging the deer by the antlers not around the neck with a rope. Avoid downed pines with branch nubs and dragging over debris that will damage the fur on the neck and brisket.
3. Call your taxidermist ahead of time to make a plan.
4. Make sure your butcher knows you want it caped for a shoulder mount.
5. Get your deer out of the woods and to your taxidermist ASAP!
6. Do not cape it yourself if you have never done it before.
7. If all else fails call your taxidermist and they will walk you through the process of caping the deer. (We do not need the whole hide)

Thanks for choosing Peak Rut! Can’t wait to finish this wicked cool antler mount!
Paul decided on an antler mount on a custom made plaque cut into the shape of Montana. The plaque is finally in route to the shop as we speak! Pretty soon the final photos will be posted and this awesome mount can go home!

Not a bad start to crossbow.
I’ve got 3 euros and one that’s going to get a new cape. This big Smithville flats 20” neck buck will be a mean agressive pose buck.
Can’t wait to get cooking on it!

Some great advice for the hunter looking to mount his deer.
Do NOT cut the throat. If you come up on your deer and it’s still alive, put another arrow, bolt, bullet in the heart.
Remember, we as taxidermists are artists, we need a good canvas to create something great.
Yes we can sew the hide together and hide the mismatched hair patterns well, but you’ll always see it.

Protect your trophy’s outcome by taking care of it properly.

Good luck everyone!

What NOT to do with the deer you plan to have mounted.
If you have to drag it, lift him up so his neck isn’t dragging. Avoid downed trees and obstacles. Use a sled when possible. Do not drag him with your 4 Wheeler. Strap him on the front or back. Do not hang him by the neck and please do not cut his throat for any reason. Another arrow, bullet or knife stab to the heart is the quick and ethical way to put them down.

Another tip for ensuring you get the best possible result!

A tool for my followers.
This is a photo of a real deer eye. Take this photo and compare it to a taxidermists deer they have posted on their website. These are the small details as a consumer you need to know! There are so many great taxidermists in New York State! Do your homework now before bagging that buck of a lifetime!
I certainly don’t proclaim to be good. I’m still learning myself. As a taxidermy snob, I will always continue to better my skills throughout my quest for a breakthrough award for a whitetail mount. I have a long way to go, but the drive is there! The key to success is to open your mind and close your mouth. Never be arrogant and always stay humble!

I’ve also included a photo of that same eye and one of my deer.
Certainly not perfect. Lots to learn still!

Mowgli keeps telling me to hurry up and finish. He’s probably right. Tonight is the night!
