I am sure that a lot of you have heard about the “mystery illness” affecting dogs throughout the country. This post is to inform you of a few things. The University of New Hampshire has identified a new type of bacterial infection and they have identified the pathogen that are making dogs sick. Currently there is no vaccine to fight against this. This respiratory illness is very similar to both kennel cough and K9 Influenza. If your dog shows any signs of a cough, runny nose, loss of appetite, being lethargic DO NOT WAIT, take your dog to the vet and have them evaluated. PLEASE DO NOT bring your dog to the facility if showing any signs of being ill. While it may not be CIRD, it could be any other illness that spreads this time of year. This will also allow the vet to do a PCR test.

We have NOT had any reported illnesses at Bark, Play & Stay and we will continue to monitor all dogs that enter our facility. We are also requesting that you take your dog every 6 months for a Bordatella booster. This may help keep the symptoms less severe if your dog were to catch a respiratory illness. Please do not take your dog(s) to any dog parks and if you do, please wait at least 10 days before bringing them for daycare or boarding.

We have also added to our cleaning protocols in order to keep our facility as safe as possible for all dogs in our care.

Please keep an eye on your pups. Dog flu is rapidly spreading in the U. S. and the Atlanta area. It is highly contagious and if your dog exhibits any symptoms please do not bring your dog to daycare or boarding and call you vet.

A rapidly spreading dog flu is causing Fulton and DeKalb county animal services to open a temporary shelter to house and protect pets that have not been exposed to the virus.
