Veteran’s Day is a time to reflect on this great country and what it takes to defend it. We are proud US Navy veterans and our sister served in the Army & Navy. We know first hand the sacrifices military families make. That’s why this day gets us a little emotional. So on this day, and every day, let’s take time to honor those who gave you the rights that you have, those who sacrificed deeply and those who paid the ultimate price. THANK YOU active duty and veterans!

If you are inclined to help with hurricane Helene relief in North Carolina, Pet Sitters International is asking for donations. See below for details.

The PSI team is located about 1.5-2 hours from the Western North Carolina area, so the impact was minimal for us; however, we are seeing reports of the tragic devastation daily and also have personal contacts helping with relief efforts and sharing information on the greatest needs.

The needs are vast, but we feel that PSI can make a small—but important—difference by collecting pet food to donate to families with pets in the impacted areas.

We have compiled an Amazon wish list (link below), and we are asking any members who would like to purchase an item from the wish list to please order by October 13.

Link here: https://www.amazon.com/hz/wishlist/ls/1RZTPO4VM3U9C?ref_=wl_share

We are currently reaching out to local organizations to determine the best way to transport donations to areas in need.

We intentionally limited the items on the wish list to focus on most-needed items and to ensure we were able to store and then deliver the donation. (We are unable to accept cash donations.)

Items purchased from the Amazon wish list will be shipped to the home of PSI President Beth Stultz-Hairston, and she and her family will store the items until it is time to transport the donations. Currently, the plan is to receive, load, and transport the donations by month's end.

Please feel free to share this link, and we thank you in advance for your support

Here is Penny’s story with her bird, Fonz.

I clearly remember the day that I got my first bird. My boss at the time was telling me how great Quaker Parrots were, and she asked me to go with her one day to get hers. When we arrived at the breeders, I did not click at all with the Quakers. The breeder showed me a baby Blue Crowned Conure. She set it on my arm and he immediately walked up to my shoulder and stuck his tongue in my ear. That did it! I took him home and named him Fonzarelli after the Fonz from Happy Days. I didn’t know anything about pet birds, so Fonz and I learned together. He was very quick to pick up words and still talks (mostly when I’m on the phone)! Some of his favorite phrases are: I’m an eagle, pretty birdie, step up, I love you, moma get the cat, tickle tickle tickle, tubeto and whatcha doin’.

Fonz lived the life of luxury. He did not live in a cage. He stayed on a large bird stand. He loved to snuggle in my hair. He loves fruit, grapes, apples, corn, bird bread, pasta and popcorn…all some of his favorites.

When I started working on the road, he travelled everywhere with me. He has been to more states than most people. On several occasions he actually saved my life. I had a very bad habit of falling asleep while driving, and at least twice he screamed in my ear and woke me up before I ran off the highway!

One morning I didn’t get up on time. He crawled down his 5 foot perch, walked from the livingroom down a hallway and into my bedroom. He then got up on the bed and stood on my chest. I opened my eyes and he pecked my nose. It was so sweet.

Fonz and I lived with my sister and her husband for a few months. My brother-in-law and Fonz would cut the grass together. It was so cool!

A few years ago we did Snellville Days. Fonz cooperated and helped us with the booth.

Fonz is not the perfect bird. His breed can be screamers, and believe me he has his moments. He is now considered a senior bird. The breed has a lifespan of 25-30 years. Fonz will turn 28 in September. As he has aged, he no longer sees me as his number one. He prefers to be with his flock (Pepper & Apollo). I will always cherish my traveling days with him.
