We Need Your Help - Introducing Fern

We were contacted by someone who has an at risk mustang in need. 🥺

Her name is Fern.

Here is her story as told by her original adopters:

Fern's journey from the untamed wilds of White River, Nevada to becoming a beloved companion and successful competitor is a testament to the power of patience, training, and compassionate care.

Born in the rugged terrain of Nevada in June 2020, Fern was just a wild-born foal when she was rounded up in January 2021. Fortunately, she was then adopted by a youth trainer who worked diligently with her on groundwork for several months, laying the foundation for her future success.

In May 2021, Fern's hard work paid off as she competed in a youth TIP Challenge, where she showcased her excellent liberty skills and remarkable patience, ultimately earning a well-deserved second-place finish. Even after the competition, Fern continued to thrive, accompanying her owners to an outdoor church on weekends and delighting the children who ran around and underneath her gentle frame. Her affinity for the water was also evident as she loved swimming in the lake during her outings. Fern's gentle nature and trainability made her a joy to work with, and she was soon adopted into a new home in July 2021, where she was showered with love and attention.

However, when Fern's owners faced health challenges, her training and socialization began to wane, leading to the development of undesirable habits that the owners did not fully recognize. Realizing the need for specialized help, Fern's original trainers stepped in, determined to guide her through these behavioral struggles. Recognizing the complexity of the situation, they ultimately reached out to the renowned Isidro Espinoza Horsemanship for assistance in rehabilitating and retraining this remarkable mustang, ensuring that Fern's journey would continue to be one of growth, triumph, and the unbreakable bond between horse and human.

Fern has learned to kick and bite. Upon reviewing video footage of the second owners working with her it was evident Fern is confused, frustrated and very unhappy. Given her amazing start in training and domestication we feel Fern is an excellent candidate for rehabilitation and retraining with the ultimate goal of placing her into an appropriate and educated home after she is safe, happy and thriving.

We need your help in order to do this. Isidro and I are happy to do the work and provide the facility for the rehabilitation. With our already heavy load of other horses we care for, train and help we cannot continue to solely fund the sanctuary’s mission. This is why we are seeking the assistance of those who love our American Legends and feel moved to help their plight. We can take Fern into our program as soon as we have raised the money to pay for care. She will need time to decompress, start treatment for ulcers and the slow process of retraining.

The hard truth 😔is that it take 2-3 times longer to retrain and rehab a mustang who has received poor experiences, trauma and/or bad behavior reinforced. It’s a tedious process that requires time and skill.

🙏Please consider helping us to help Fern. If we are able to get her we will post regular updates on her progress here. https://isidroespinozahorsemanship.thrivecart.com/help-mustang-fern/

Ligero’s Story
Part 2

The animal communicator we used was Nicole from Nicole’s Got Sole. She is pretty darn amazing plus a legit energy worker, we have used her many times.

She said Ligero had an Eeyore temperament. He had some kind of trauma when he was very young and he never got over it. Very much a “woe is me” type of mentality. She asked him how he felt about being ridden and he baulked at the idea! He was like, no, not interested. That gave us some food for thought for sure. She did a ton of energy work on him and talked him through some of his feelings and what he was holding on. We weren’t sure it would help but was definitely worth a try for him. He seemed to significantly relax during the session and we were hopeful.

Ligero had recently gotten a new neighbor. His name was Beau and he was a pretty gray mustang just like Ligero. Beau was super chill. He was a prison trained mustang who was with us to become more responsive under saddle, better on the trail and get some finishing in the bridle. He had a quiet way about him and was super level headed and mentally sound. Perfect neighbor for Ligero to learn from.

The next day after Ligero’s session with Nicole we saw Ligero mutually grooming with Beau through the fence. You could have knocked us over with a feather. We didn’t want to move or even breathe, too afraid to disrupt them. This was simply amazing!

Ligero began making a huge change after that. He was happier, easier to catch, started relaxing in his training more and even started to enjoy grooming and getting scratches for the first time. He made huge progress in his training and was getting close to a first ride! We were so so excited and thought this was just what he needed.

But alas, Beau was only with us for 4mths and then had to go home.

Part 3 coming soon!

Ligero’s Story
~Part 1~

Introducing our flagship long-term sanctuary resident, Ligero.

✨Ligero’s is a long story so will take several parts. I got Ligero in 2022 for the Virtual Extreme Mustang Makeover. He had been in BLM holding for awhile due to a wither injury and subsequent infection that took a long time to heal. He was said to be a 7yo gelding from the Choke Cherry, UT HMA.

The first couple of training sessions with Ligero were very encouraging. He didn’t do anything extreme, your typical pressure training and halter breaking. He even let Isidro touch his mouth and look at this teeth. We thought they looked a lot older than 7 but wouldn’t know for sure until we had his teeth done. He was big too, at least 15hh and stout🦸‍♂️. Much bigger than I like for a makeover but I was encouraged by his rather average gentling process.

He then became a 50 first dates type of mustang and we were just treading water doing the same thing over and over again. He had no interest in bonding with anyone or letting his guard down at all. He really just gave off a miserable energy and walls🏰 as high as could be. We quickly realized he was not making the makeover time frame and would not be well suited to the competition or being auctioned off. So we pulled him from the competition and started to slow down with his training.

About this time we were contacted by a lady who had fallen in love 🥰with him and was planning to bid on him at the makeover auction. He reminded her a special horse she had for many years. She came out to meet Ligero and they seemed to get on ok in his very dismissive way. She decided to buy him and put him into training. He was Sale Authority you see. Meaning we had bought him directly from BLM due to the length of time he was in holding and his age. Sale Authority horses are given title 📜right away and no longer have BLM protection.

Soon after we had his teeth 🦷done and discovered he was in fact about 11yrs old! That is a huge difference and makes a huge difference with trainability in wild geldings. As time went on and we worked with Ligero more and observed him we saw he didn’t want to interact with other horses. He just moped in a corner or fought 💪with them through the fence. This became more and more concerning. Training progress was going at a snails 🐌pace but was still progressing. Sometimes we run into horses that just take longer to become domesticated and realizing how amazing it can be.

With his demeanor just not improving and seeming to get worse😔 we decided to try an animal communicator to see if we could break across all his walls and see what the problem was. See if we could find out what it is he needed.

See what we found out in Part 2!🫢
