Did you know that February is National Dog Training Education Month!

There are SO many benefits to puppy and dog training!

Training improves communication between you and your dog. It helps our dogs to understand what we are asking of them.

Training builds the bond between you and your dog. Creating a strong bond also builds the trust between you and your dog.

Training can keep your pets safe. Commands like "Come" and "Stay" can keep your dog safe and could potentially safe their life in a bad situation.

Training can reduce behavioral problems, anxiety and stress. Training your dog at an early age can prevent the unwanted behaviors from happening like jumping, chewing, barking and other behaviors we don't enjoy as humans. Prevention is key! Training can also help to work on these behaviors if they already exist.

Training makes for a well behaved, balanced, and social dog making them more adaptable to meeting new people, animals and in new situations.

I think we all agree that dogs and other pets are members of our family, but it is important to remember that dogs are not children and they need to be properly trained, properly socialized and well adjusted throughout their lives. Getting a dog is a HUGE commitment and unlike children, dogs NEVER grow up and move out on their own. Dogs are a life time commitment and that includes a lifetime of ongoing training, structure, socializing and stimulation.

Training our dogs throughout their lives is so important for not only manners and social skills, but also to keep our dogs active and stimulated. You can incorporate training with everything throughout your day with your pup. Feeding, entering and exiting doors, walking, playing, and many more things to incorporate training!

Did you know that when you go to a trainer, that the training is ultimately up to YOU to follow through with. Yup that is correct, it is your responsibility to train your dog. Trainers just like teachers for our children, give you the tools and knowledge to train and work with your dogs. It is your responsibility to follow through and do the work. The work does NOT end when you leave the classroom! It continues at home, in the car, on walks, at the beach, at the store, it continues everywhere you go and for the life of the dog!

Training can be and should be FUN for you and your dog! There are SO many different types of classes and things you can do with your dog throughout their lives! Puppy classes, Basic Manners, Obedience, Rally, AKC Trick, Agility, CGC, Therapy work, Dock Diving, Nose Work and SO much more! We may not offer some of these classes, but we do offer quite a lot and if you want to do something like Dock Diving which we do not do here, we are happy to point you in the right direction!

Training your dog is your responsibility as a dog owner. Please be responsible and do right by your dog. Your dog depends on you to do the right thing.

Here are just a few dogs and pups that have come to us for training and are well rounded, well adjusted members of their families and the community.

Brrrrrr it has been quite chilly and brisk out there!! Pay attention to your pups when out walking in this cold. If rock salt has been put down due to ice, please keep your pets away from those areas or protect their paws with booties-it is always a good idea to wipe/rinse your dogs paws when you return home from a walk in case they walked through any salt.

Get those games and interactive toys out! Don't set your pups up for failure if they are not getting those regular walks and regular exercise. It is important that we set our dogs up for success when they cannot get that regular exercise.

Did you know that brain stimulation can burn as much energy as a walk? When your dog has to use their brain it burns energy! This is a Win, Win for all!! No, this does not mean you never have to go for walk again, this is just another tool to keep your dog happy and busy!

Play a game of Hide and Seek and involve everyone in the house! Tired children are also a plus and some kids are still on Christmas break, so get them involved!

Find It! Hide some of your dogs favorite toys along with some treats throughout the house and have them Find It! It is important to help your dog out at first as they do not know what the words mean, but once they get it, it is so much fun to watch them using their nose and brain to find items throughout the house!

Make Feeding Time fun!! Place your dogs food in a food dispensing toy or use a slow feeder or do a 20-30 minute training session with your dog and their food. "Sit" they get some breakfast/dinner, "Down" they get some breakfast/dinner and so on.

Some great food dispensing toys are the Tricky Treat Ball, Kong Wobbler, Nina Ottosson's Treat Tumbler, traditional Kongs, West Paws Zogoflex Toppl, Pet Safe Busy Buddy, Busy Buddy Twist & Treat, Kong Bamboo Feeder, Nina Ottosson's puzle games. These are just a few of the more popular ones, but there are SO many out there!! You can purchase most of these in some of our local pet store like Hot Diggity, Agway Cape Cod, and Petsmart. Homegoods, TJ Maxx and Marshalls also have pet sections and often get the Nina Ottosson toys and others. We like to support local, but if you are not able to get to these stores, you can also order online.

Please make sure that when using any toys, they are the appropriate size for your dog. Food dispensing toys are not meant as chew toys, so feed them out of them then pick them up for the next feeding or treat time.

Fred wanted everyone to know it is still WINDY and COLD out there today!! Check your gates, check your fencing, check your paddocks, put on your cozy sweaters and jackets and snuggle in or go for a walk...Fred says it's a lazy, couch potato kind of day for him and his crazy sisters who need a little more then just the lazy couch day!

Even though our dogs definitely need the daily exercise, sometimes they don't want to go out in this just as much as we don't want to go out in this.

Did you know there are many things you can do to burn energy in your dogs when you don't want to go out on a day like today!

Some of Fred's favorite things on a cold and windy day are having a stuffed Kong(or other food dispensing toy)! Fred says there are SO many fun, yummy, delicious things to stuff in these amazing interactive toys!! Fred loves bananas(coocoo for bananas), plain greek yogurt, blueberries, a few cookies and of course his favorite..peanut butter! You can freeze or refrigerate them to make it a little harder for them.

Fred's sister, Olivia loves to do the Nina Ottosson puzzle games that you have to move little windows around to find treats or kibble!!

Some fun stuffy toy games are the "Hide A" toys! Fred's favorite is the Hide-A-Squirrel!! Shhhh don't tell Fred they're not real squirrels! He also likes the Hide-A-Bees and Hide-A-Gingerbread!!

Fred says, Kong also makes this big, hard, plastic, wobble, dispensing toy and when you paw at it or toss it across the room with your nose, it throws kibble or treats at you!! It's the coolest thing ever....Mom says...if you don't have a glass coffee table.

Eloise loves her Tricky Treat ball that holds kibble or treats and as you roll it around, treats/kibble fall out of it!

Our pups NEVER eat out of a bowl. They always eat out of some dispensing type feeder or the slow feeders. It is so important to stimulate our dogs brains regularly and especially on days that we don't want to go out in the chilly or crappy weather.

You can also do some fun, small training sessions right inside your home! There is no such thing as a dog that does not benefit from regular training πŸ₯°

Play a game of Hide & Seek with your dog! This one is super fun for the kiddos too!

Play "Find It" where you hide treats throughout the house or your dogs favorite toys and tell them to "Find it!" The first few times you may have to help them, but once they get it, Game On!!

Most folks are a little slower in the winter months, especially after the holidays and many don't want to go out on these cold days, so why not sign up for some training classes! This is something fun for the entire family! Training classes are a fantastic way to build a bond with you and your dog and it is a great way to spend time with everyone in the family! There are so many types of dog classes-not just obedience classes(though some could definitely benefit from these as well). You can do Trick classes, Rally Obedience classes, Agility, Canine Good Citizen and so many more!!

Be interactive with your pets! Take advantage of their time with us, do fun things with them, enjoy your time with them, because it goes by quick and they deserve it πŸ’•πŸΎπŸ’•πŸΎπŸ’•

Keep your pets safe! Happy New Year!!

Keep your pets safe! Happy New Year!!

It is WINDY!!

Please check your fences BEFORE letting your dogs out!

Fencing often blows down or gates are blown open when the wind is strong. This goes for farm animal fencing as well.

Please be cautious of where you take your pups on this windy day! Eye injuries are common on a day like today especially if you go to the beach! It is probably a good idea to stay away from the beach today with your pups as they can not cover their eyes to protect them from the sand. Unless of course your pup is cool like Fred and wears sunglasses or Doggles!

Please remember it is also difficult for dogs to hear when the wind is blowing this strong, so if your dog is normally under voice control be sure they are close to you or on a leash to be safe.

Please pick up items in your yard that could blow into your pets scaring them, blow into the road or into a walking passerby!

Happy New Year!! Stay safe and keep your pets safe! Have a wonderful windy day!
