SOMEONE OPENED MY ATTIC DOOR EVERY DAY – WHEN I FOUND A NOTE: 'COME TO THE ATTIC AT MIDNIGHT. ALONE,' MY HEART SANK.

I inherited a house from my grandparents and moved in. It’s always been a place of comfort and nostalgia. But lately, it had become a source of unease. We sent our son to my mother-in-law’s for two weeks while he was on school break. He loves visiting her and the city she lives in, so we never worried about him.

On the last day of his stay, which was also my birthday, his grandma was supposed to bring him back home and stay for the party.

That morning, I woke up and got a call from an unknown number. Thinking it was a birthday call, I answered. But instead of a cheerful greeting, I heard my son’s terrified, trembling voice:

I WAS READING MY GRANDKIDS A BOOK ABOUT A SECRET CHAMBER WHEN SUDDENLY, THEY REVEALED THAT THEIR PARENTS HAD ONE TOO.

I'm 64 and recently widowed. My son and daughter-in-law have supported me a lot, and they invited me to live at their home for some time.

I agreed as it was hard to stay totally alone. The only thing they asked of me was NOT to go to the basement, as there were repairs being done. It was very dusty, and I’m allergic to dust.

So, here I am, babysitting my grandkids, cooking meals, and trying to be grateful to my kids.
