Dogs being punished for being dogs. 😢

Dogs never allowed to sniff, chase, chew, dig, explore, forage, make friends, bark at stuff...

Dogs being fed foods that influence their behaviour. Then being blamed for that behaviour.

Dogs being dragged around. Dogs pulled along, or held back. Or je**ed continuously by the neck.

Dogs who are mishandled, or 'firmly' handled. Or simply physically handled to teach them something.

Dogs being made to do stuff they really don't want to do with their own bodies.

Dogs with little autonomy. Dogs with few choices.

Dogs who are heavily restricted.

Dogs spending much of their lives in small, unnatural confines.

Dogs being manipulated, forced, bullied or bribed into difficult or uncomfortable situations.

Dogs trying hard to understand what's expected of them. Dogs doing their very best to rub along with another species.

Dogs living with humans who have ridiculously high expectations of them.

Dogs being expected to tolerate anything and everything we throw at them.

Dogs who are grabbed, poked, pulled, pinched, squeezed, or sat on.

Dogs being held down. Or physically manipulated into a certain position.

Dogs being hugged. Dogs being touched in any way, when they don't want to be touched.

Dogs being crowded. Dogs prevented from leaving an uncomfortable situation.

Dogs used as photo props, or to make stupid videos for laughs and likes.

Dogs being coerced.

Dogs being intimidated. Dogs being threatened.

Dogs having their space invaded.

Dogs not being heard.

Dogs being shut down and ignored.

Dogs actually being punished for attempting to communicate with us. 🤦‍♀️

Bless their beautiful hearts. They put up with so much nonsense from us.

Their stoicism should never be taken for granted. We really shouldn't be taking advantage of their ability to put up with so much crap. 😱

Seriously, when you consider how many millions of dogs live alongside humans, it's literally mind-blowing to think how few of them actually bite anyone! 🙏

Dogs. Are. Literally. Incredible. 🤷‍♀️🐾💜

REMY IS A GOOD BOY AND NEEDS A NEW HOME he’s in the Tampa area - posting this for a friend. Please share. DM me if you can help.

This is Remy. He is abt 8- 10 years old. His story with our family starts about seven years ago when my sister-in-law brought him home after seeing him living in terrible conditions as a “shop dog”. He’s just the sweetest gentleman, very quiet (I’m not sure I’ve ever heard him bark while visiting them), potty trained, very good around cats, and is non-reactive to other dogs. He’s had a bout of heartworm which he’s been treated for and latest tests have been negative (treatment is ongoing).

This sweet boy has been loved on and cared by my in-laws for the past 7 years, and had a special bond with my FIL. Unfortunately, my FIL passed away unexpectedly in September. My retired MIL and disabled SIL have been forced to find another home, as they’re now unable to afford the place they’ve been living in. The hunt for a new home started with bringing Remy with them in mind. Unfortunately, the rental market is very cruel to folks who fall just above the poverty line, and it was nearly impossible to find a place within their extremely limited budget. They had to take what they could get, which is a tiny apartment that doesn’t accept dogs over 35 #, and no bully breeds. It’s been an extremely stressful, frustrating and heartbreaking situation for our whole family, who hasn’t had the chance the fully grieve the loss of my FIL before having to spring into action to avoid homelessness for my MIL and SIL. Please understand- this is NOT a situation where the dog is being cast aside as an inconvenience to be made someone else’s problem. He’s loved so much, and we can’t stomach the idea

If you know, you know.

If you don't, here it is. The essence of getting good behavior to repeat (people, dogs, cats, kids...). If you like what they're doing at that moment, PAY them! Praise, pets, affection, treats, toys, play.

Reinforcement drives behavior.

Sometimes what we call stubborn is really concern or fear or uncertainty.

Give your dog the time and space to collect themselves. Move away from the 'scary' if it helps.

I love this idea! Yellow ribbon on the collar or leash is a polite request for space. A little dog caution notice.

You might think it is just there as a decoration, but it has an important meaning.

A lot of dogs want you to know this -

Instead of a fancy collar and bed? They’d rather have a fenced in yard - even if it has to be small and home made - so they can have off leash time to dog and dig.

Instead of daily neighborhood walks? They’d rather you drive to a dirt road and put them on a 30ft line and let them zig zag and smell as long as they like

Instead of twice daily meals in a bowl? They’d rather have food through enrichment activities that stimulates their brain and their nose.

Instead of basic obedience training? They’d rather have purpose driven training that feeds their genetic make up and needs AND helps them survive and thrive in todays world.

Instead of a human wanting something from them? They’d love a human wanting to understand them better.

Instead of focusing on perfect “heels” and “stays”? They’d love to learn how to be resilient and less stressed and cope with the outside world and our expectations.

Instead of harsh punishments and corrections? They’d prefer proactive management and rewards for good decisions.

We can’t change everything about the lives our dogs are forced to live with us in, but we can make these kinds of changes and see a huge improvement in their quality of life and wellbeing.
