Bear has been adopted!!!

We pulled Bear from another WI shelter where he was experiencing an extended stay with no interest. Once he arrived, we got him started in Dog School (thanks to a generous donor!) and were able to iron out his needs. He was in fact not "dog aggressive", but simply reactive in the shelter setting and just needed guidance on how to maneuver those emotions.

He made remarkable improvement in a short amount of time, and then caught the eye of someone on the East Coast! Bear is now a New Yorker and will spend his days as a spoiled, retired boy

ARE YOU WORTH COMING BACK TO?

I’m often horrified when I watch people trying to get their dogs to come back to them when they call.

They call and call and get increasingly angry and frustrated as their dog keeps ignoring them.

When their dog eventually comes back, or has been chased and "captured” by the now really angry person, they get screamed at, yanked about, or punished in some way for taking so long and not listening.

Why on earth would a dog want to return to someone who does this to them!

The most common reason dogs don’t come back when we call is because it’s not a positive experience.

A new environment is generally far more rewarding, stimulating and exciting than coming back to us.
An exciting scent or seeing something to chase can all override a response to recall.

Make coming back to you well worth it by always making it a rewarding experience and keep practicing this throughout a dog’s life.

Have a little patience if it takes longer than you would like, let your dog finish what they’re doing before calling them, practice in different locations and environments and never reprimand or punish them for coming back.

There is never a guarantee of a perfect recall each and every time, but making it a rewarding experience will greatly improve the rate of success.

Bear's training sessions today included off leash manners as well as some confidence building!

We also wanted to mention that his adoption fee has been sponsored by Creekside Kennels & Shop !

(It wouldn't let us post 2 training videos at the same time, so we combined both of them into one longer video)

Sometimes when our dogs our taking their time, they are also reminding us to slow down.

We love these updates from Bear's trainers at dog school! Even in the daycare setting at the end, he's handling himself like a gentleman and learning how to navigate his reactions by trusting his handlers 🩷 so proud of you, Bear!

UPDATE from Dog School Training:
Bear has been attending Dog School in La Crosse, WI and has been doing great! We're learning that he can, in fact, coexist around many dogs as long as he feels respected and safe, and they have complimentary personalities. Like any dog, he has limits to what he wants to tolerate, and he's also an older fella that may just not care for chaos. He has successfully met dogs of all sizes, and even a puppy while he was at school, and was a gentleman who simply wanted guidance from his handler. Because we know he's capable and more than willing to learn, we've removed the "no dogs" restriction from his bio and will simply base it on the dogs interactions with one another!

If your pet has ingested a substance and you’re uncertain whether it is toxic, we recommend contacting the Pet Poison Help Line while en route to an emergency veterinarian. Doing so will assist your vet in promptly determining the necessary steps to take.
FUNDRAISING AND TEMPORARY CREDIT
Ask if your veterinarian accepts Care Credit, a credit card specifically for health care expenses, including for pets. Note: Be sure you understand the repayment terms; often you can repay interest-free within a specific time period, but if you are late with a payment a high interest rate will be applied retroactively.
Ask if your veterinarian accepts ScratchPay, a service similar to Care Credit.
Some veterinarians accept donations from clients for a fund held in reserve to help other clients in need of financial assistance. Ask if your veterinarian has such a fund.
