Big news for the (Texas) rat community—one of the most notoriously unethical breeders, with a long history of cruelty, is finally stepping down. This is a huge step forward for the welfare of these animals and for everyone working toward better standards in the hobby.

ON THAT NOTE; We were gonna wait a little longer to announce it, but be have multiple litters of rats right now! None will be available for couple of generations but since seeing the good news, we decided nows a good a time as any to announce even more good news!

For the sake of transparency we have an announcement to make!
We will now be offering frozen feeder mice to our clients in Brazoria County and the surrounding area and wanted to be open about it with our clients. We are working to provide pet quality mice in the future and hopefully rats again- pets and also feeders.
We understand this may come as a shock to our customers and is stigmatized, but we believe that pets deserve the best quality food and care possible and will work to provide that to ANY animal in our care even the ones necessary to feed other pets.

We've updated our website! While it will see frequent updates, it's definitely still a work a in progress!

-April 2025: We will be uploading weekly inventory sheets as soon as we have enough stock to do so, as well as opening our order forms to get our wait list active. We're still working on several projects at the moment and can't wait to get more things finished and published.

We're back!
So alot of "new" is here and we're excited to be able to share it with y'all! After last year's tragedy we've had one wild ride;We moved to a new area and began building our home, we welcomed our first baby in December, and with so much more in between we've finally reopened our doors!
We will now be serving the Brazoria county area and while we haven't brought rats back into the fold with our new program, we have begun our journey into fancy mice! We do hope to one day have rats again as they will always have a special place in our hearts, but now is just not the time and we're just not ready yet.
So with all of that, here's a few things to expect- we have changed our name from Swamp Witch Rattery to Swamp Witch Exotics which will go into effect after Facebook approves. We have several projects going behind the scenes that we cant wait to share with y'all and we will be not only fully transitioning this page to reflect our new program, but working to get our new stuff released publicly!

🚨 Health Testing is NOT Optional 🚨

As responsible breeders, we have an obligation—not just to our animals, but to the people who bring them into their homes. With easily accessible health testing for both rats and mice, there is no excuse not to use these resources. Ignoring testing doesn’t just put our own colonies at risk—it endangers the entire community.

Right now, there is an ongoing outbreak in mice due to breeders who dismiss testing as “pointless,” claiming they can simply “tell” if their animals are healthy. In rats, SDAV outbreaks continue to pop up from breeders who refuse to test or who purchase untested stock, spreading disease further.

Let’s be clear: Testing has NEVER been expensive. When Charles River (CR) testing was available, breeders could pool up to 10 rats or 10 mice on a single test. A full panel cost just $180, and you only need to test 10% of your stock—meaning if you have 100 rats or 100 mice, you only need ONE test.

And how often do you need to test?

✅ Once a year unless you’re frequently bringing in new stock

✅ If you do add new animals regularly, one additional test per year is typically suggested

That’s 1-2 tests per year to ensure your animals are healthy, your customers receive clean stock, and your breeding program remains ethical. That is a small price to pay for peace of mind and the well-being of the animals and people involved.

CR may no longer allow private breeder to test, however there are at least 2 other companies working on putting a panel together for us that will be similar in price.

Some rodent-borne illnesses can be transmitted to humans, posing serious risks to children, the elderly, and those who are immune-compromised. Breeding without testing isn’t just irresponsible—it’s dangerous.

Because of this, we will NOT buy from or sell to breeders who do not test their stock.

UPDATE: we are closing the form for now so that we can go through them and start mapping out possible options and transportation routes! Please note if you listed that you are interested in adopting, you will still need to go through Medina County's adoption application process. Medina County will reach out to as many of you as possible!

We are still in need of assistance for our friends at Medina County SPCA, who have 480 rats remaining from a hoarding case. You read that right - almost FIVE HUNDRED rats. 😱

If you are interested in assisting in any way, including but not limited to helping transport rats to other rescues, fostering, and adopting, please take a moment to complete this very short and easy form!

It is going to take a LOT of help from the community to get it down to manageable numbers for the shelter. All hands on deck for this case, truly. We plan on taking in as many rats as we possibly can once we open up space, so if you are able to help transport them to us in late June, please specify so in the form.

We have decided to focus our energy on a few projects we’ve been working on for months now, and have also decided to open up a new part of our boycott lists. We will now be accepting submitted complaints from clients, other Ratteries and rodentries, and services in the community. Anyone who wishes to submit an application, we will be posting three separate application links! Also we will be opening a “mail” list for anyone who would like to receive updated versions of the lists! Since we’re not breeding anymore,we still want to support our community🖤
