There is a large misconception about what socialization is when it comes to dogs.

The general public believes that socialization means to have a young puppy interact with as many dogs and people as possible in order to learn that they are friendly.

This could not be further from the truth.

Socialization is about teaching the dog to focus on you while experiencing the distractions of the world around them.

It is about desensitizing the dog to various sights, smells, and sounds that they will ultimately encounter throughout the rest of their life.

When owners focus solely on interactions with humans and other dogs, they leave out the other important aspects of socialization.

Not only do they leave those factors out but they simultaneously create value in other people and animals which ultimately reduces the value in the owner.

Over time this deteriorates the relationship as the dog will be in a constant struggle against the owner in order to get to the value that has been created in others.

This can lead to the dog feeling frustrated and even lead to aggression in some cases.

True socialization places the owner at the center of the dog’s world while simultaneously placing everything else as merely a secondary thought for the dog.
