We had a post get a bit out of hand earlier. I want to apologize for my part in that. I didn’t think I needed to specify that we were looking for FOSTER placement since we only do short term foster placement, not permanent rehoming. I’d like to share more information about SAFE Spokane below.

What we do- SAFE offers a safe place for owners to temporarily place their pets while the person is a crisis situation. Some of the reasons people have turned to us to temporarily care for their beloved pets are urgent or emergency medical care, seeking safety from domestic violence, inpatient mental health care, substance use disorders treatment, and getting into safe & stable housing after being homeless.

During the time an animal is placed with one of our volunteer foster families it still belongs to its human. The owner does not relinquish their rights to the pet. In the rare instance an animal is abandoned in our program, we take responsibility to find them a great forever home.

That being said we’re always looking for volunteers. Foster families are nearly always the biggest need but things like transportation are needed as well. Recently we’ve had to turn away several people seeking help due to lack of foster homes. As you can imagine it’s heartbreaking for us not be able to help, even more for the people seeking support but not finding it.

UPDATE- There have been many, many generous offers to foster these sweet girl. I think it’s safe to say a foster has been secured. We do have other pets looking for foster families if anyone is open to that.

We have an urgent request for foster placement of a teacup chihuahua. She is approximately one year old, spayed, and house trained. This little lady is used to sleeping with her owner so crate training is undetermined, believed to be current on vaccines, great with kids and people in general but other animals are an unknown due to the fact that she hasn’t been around other animals. Duration of stay is unknown but will be anywhere from a week to a month because it is still being determined if the owner will be getting inpatient treatment or intensive outpatient treatment.

We are waiting for more details as they are currently second hand. This post will be updated as more information becomes known.

A soon-to-be mom has reached out to us hoping we can care for her dogs until she’s able to get into her apartment on September 1st. The standard questions & her answers below.

Reason for housing need-
I am a high risk pregnancy. My doctors recommend I am near a hospital. I lost my housing in Spokane at the beginning of august and am currently living in salmon Idaho temporarily where I don’t have access to the medical care I need. I have an apartment ready for me in and all of my animals on September first in Spokane. The Ronald McDonald house offered me a spot for the rest of august if I can find accommodations for my animals.

-pug mix is afraid of kids, both other dogs are great with kids and adults

Spay or neutered?
-Pug cross and dachshund cross are neutered. Catahoula cross is not

Up to date with vaccinations?
-Yes. Can provide vaccination record

Is the animal an escape artist needing an extra secure environment?
-I haven’t had issues with any escaping in the past

What is the anticipated length of care needed?
-the 17th of august to 1st of September

We’re looking for a two kitty foster from Aug 13-Sept 8th. Please reach out if you’re able to foster or have questions.
We have a kitty condo available if someone can foster but wants to keep the cats separate from the household.

Genuine is a 9 year old female mostly black with a white domesticated cat, often called a tuxedo cat. She is fixed and cat boxed and trained. She lived with other cats and small dogs all her life. Her last vaccinations were 3 years ago. She is an indoor car with a screen back porch. She is an escape artist and will try and get out to visit other cats that are not in the same area. She is good with people however she doesn't like to be carried by kids
I'm being evicted from my house and have housing for them by the 2nd week of September.

Baba is a mostly white and black domesticated cat often called cow cats. Male and is neutered, 17 years of age. Is cat boxed trained and has been with other small Dogs and Cats most all his life. He Loves everyone of all ages and will greet everyone with Love often with a head nudge. He has been indoors with a visit to the screened in back porch he has never escaped. His last vaccinations was 3 years ago was told indoor cats only need ever 3 years so he is due. I'm currently looking for secure housing but have a place for them to go by mid September.

Update! Request filled!
Sitka is adjusting well now. But we still need to help her. She can’t get a job as long as Sitka is at the shelter with them. Even if you can only help for a few weeks.
We may have to board him to keep the owner and her baby safe. If you can help with that PayPal , Venmo -, or donate at any Numerica Branch.

Looking for a foster for a big water boy 💦 Details below, if you have questions we will reach out to the owner for answers-

Reason care is needed- homeless single mom

Type of animal/breed- German Shephard/ Black Lab mix, about 115 pounds- he’s a big boy.

Age-3 years

S*x- intact Male

Name- Sitka

Crate trained and/or housebroken- Both! His command to go in his crate is “Box” and then I give him a treat. He usually receives his food and water in his crate to avoid my 16 month old playing in it. Leash trained and has been on a runner.

Good with other animals? Dogs and cats? Farm animals?- he loves cats, hasn’t been around farm animals. Likes other dogs but sometimes they don’t like him as he is an intact male and not small. Has shown some food aggression in the past (low growls)

Good with kids/people in general?: Good with kids, but does not like being crawled on. I don’t allow my baby to crawl on him or pull at him, only pet him under supervision. No issues with nephews, 4-8 years old

Spay or neutered? No, but will be neutered if we can find a foster for him!

Up to date with vaccinations? I think so. I can call his vet and double check.

Is the animal an escape artist needing an extra secure environment? No, he won’t even step over a fence or jump a baby gate if I place him behind one.

What is the anticipated length of care needed? 30 days

*he goes insane for water. Hoses, sprinklers, swimming. He is incredibly food and toy motivated so was very easy to train and is smart.

These handsome lads are looking for a 1-2 week long foster home while their owner gets moved into a pet friendly apartment. Info from their owner to follow & a video in the comments 🐾

Needing temporary home until I am moved into my pet friendly apartment. Recently went through a breakup which have left me in a situation where I am staying with a friend at a non pet friendly place until I can move into a pet friendly apartment. There are two male dogs both around 65 lbs. Zeus is a pitbull and Ares is a collie/rott. They are both crate and house trained. They are great with people and good with other animals. Neither are neutered. Both are up to date with shots. I have never had problems with either of them running away. The max length would be two weeks but minimum a week.

I am currently homeless & in the process of looking for a place. They are currently under the guardian care act in spokanimal but will have to be placed somewhere else by the 9th of July due to them having a change of insurance they are no longer able to house dogs over 25lbs

Safe Spokane’s goal is to step in during times of human crisis to temporarily care for their pets. It is our hope that by taking that worry away from their owners that energy can go towards improving their situation. Some of the reasons for this care include unforeseen hospital stays, substance abuse treatment, domestic violence, stays in transitional housing, and more. This is accomplished by a group of individuals that open their homes to foster, use their vehicles to transport, provide donations of items such as dog crates & kennels for transport or to utilize during foster stays, leashes, harnesses, collars, AirTags, and AirTag holders for safety (and tracking if it were ever to be necessary), pet food, blankets & beds, money to fill in gaps in supplies when needed, and that’s only some of the things that keep things running. We are always in need of volunteers, especially fosters.
More volunteers means more people and pets get help and less have to be turned away.

Foster(s) needed-

•Tobie is a 3 year old female pit bull
•Princess is a 2 year old female German Shepard

Their owner needs about 6 weeks to heal from multiple broken bones. Both dogs are spayed, up to date on vaccines, crate trained, house trained, and good with people including children. Tobie likes to snuggle cats & has a close cat buddy but Princess will chase cats. I’m sure the ladies would like to stay together but their owner says they will do fine in separate foster homes if that’s what is needed.

Foster needed-
Meet Duke the four year old golden lab mix. He is a good boy but his human needs surgery soon and unfortunately will not be able to take him outside to potty or go for walks while recovering. As we all know recovery times can vary, the expected timeline is 8 weeks but it could be as few as 6 weeks and as many as 10.

Duke is house trained, neutered, up to date on vaccines, and generally good with other animals and people. He has not shown any signs of aggression but like most labs he’s a very happy boy & sometimes jumps up to show you how happy he is to see you. He has also been known to chase white cats and rabbits so a secure fence is a must.
