I was walking through the COTA paddock toward the end of another event I was working, trying to catch sight of the Pirelli World Challenge cars being unloaded for a practice session the next day. The crew chief for Black Swan Racing spotted me and my big white lens, called me into their garage, and asked me about my camera. In short order he’d hired me to come back the next day and shoot their practice session to get some shots for their socials and hero cards. They were so impressed with my work they asked me to come back and shoot the actual race. This is my favorite of my COTA memories - just goes to show you, sometimes the best opportunities are just a matter of sheer dumb luck - like walking by the right garage with an impressive looking camera setup - but you still have to be able to rise to the occasion when it presents itself.

Don’t be dumb.

Don Garlits on Saturday set a new electric car record of 189 mph in his Swamp Rat 38 dragster. The record run was overshadowed, in our eyes, by a heinous error on the IHRA's part.

No need to storm Area 51 to find UFOs. Just go to an air show where our top fighter jets are performing demos. Fun fact: most “UFO” sightings around Area 51 were top secret, cutting edge fighter jets, like this F22 Raptor, whose twin Pratt & Whitney engines provide 35,000 lbs of thrust each, and in combination with its thrust vectoring capabilities, help the F22 appear to defy the laws of physics in flight. Given its maneuverability, in combination with its stealthy shape and coatings, it’s easy to see why desert spotters could mistake this plane for a UFO when it was under development in the 90s.

This tree stands alone in an empty field as a tribute to a loved one lost just before Christmas, who was unable to make it to see the display the first time. Every year it’s done up in a different color. Holidays are a great time for families to come together, but they’re also a difficult time for so many. So in your rush to make this season perfect, spare a thought, a moment of kindness, for those who may not be as jolly as you think they should be.

And now we start the official road trip stories! For this shot, I drew heavy inspiration from the incredible work by Webb Bland. Story: On my way through Big Bend National Park, I meandered up to this scenic overlook and discovered there’d been a recent (like, yesterday) grass fire. The contrast between the burnt (but not dead) vegetation and the heavy storm clouds really captures the razor-thin line between life and death in the desert. The world may burn around you, but then the rain comes and life goes on.
