🌿✨ Behold the Emerald Tree Boa! ✨🌿

This breathtaking species is scientifically known as Corallus caninus. Native to the lush rainforests of South America, particularly in countries like Brazil, Venezuela, and Guyana, these arboreal beauties live high in the treetops, perfectly camouflaged among the foliage.

🌍 Conservation Status
Good news! Emerald tree boas are currently listed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List, meaning they aren’t endangered. However, like many rainforest species, habitat loss due to deforestation remains a looming threat to their populations.

🐍 Husbandry & Care
Caring for an emerald tree boa requires commitment and precise husbandry to ensure their well-being:
• Enclosure: Vertical terrarium with ample climbing branches and hides.
• Temperature: 82–88°F during the day, with a slight drop at night to 75–78°F.
• Humidity: Maintain 70–90%—essential for shedding and hydration.
• Diet: Carnivorous; primarily rodents. Juveniles eat small prey like pinkies, while adults take appropriately sized rats.
• Lighting: UVB isn’t essential but can benefit overall health. Provide a light-dark cycle (12 hours each).
• Substrate: Cypress mulch or coco fiber works well for retaining humidity.

🌟 Fun Facts
1️⃣ Emerald tree boas aren’t venomous; they use their powerful muscles to constrict prey.
2️⃣ Their bright green scales are accented by striking white or yellow markings, resembling a lightning bolt pattern.
3️⃣ Babies are born bright red, orange, or yellow and develop their green coloration as they grow.
4️⃣ They have heat-sensing pits to detect warm-blooded prey, even in the dark!
5️⃣ They are masters of patience, often waiting motionless for hours to ambush their prey.

Axolotl Care Guide: Expert Level

Axolotls (Ambystoma mexicanum) are captivating aquatic amphibians known for their regenerative abilities and unique appearance. As an expert, you’re likely familiar with the basics of axolotl care, so this guide focuses on advanced techniques to enhance their health and longevity.

1. Habitat Setup

Tank Size & Environment

• Minimum Tank Size: 20 gallons per axolotl. Larger tanks reduce water quality fluctuations.
• Tank Dimensions: Prefer long tanks (not tall) to maximize floor space.
• Tank Placement: Keep in a low-traffic, shaded area to minimize stress.

Substrate

• Fine Sand: Prevents impaction, unlike gravel.
• Bare Bottom Tanks: Suitable for temporary setups or quarantine, but axolotls may struggle to grip surfaces.
• Plant Mats: Use moss or synthetic substrates for additional enrichment.

Hiding Spots & Decor

• Include multiple hides (PVC pipes, ceramic pots, or caves) for security.
• Use live plants like anubias or java moss for oxygenation and water quality improvement. Anchor them securely to avoid uprooting.

Lighting

• Axolotls are sensitive to bright light. Use dim, aquarium-safe LED lighting or natural daylight.
• Provide light breaks with floating plants or shaded areas.

2. Water Quality

Temperature

• Optimal: 60–64°F (16–18°C).
• Avoid temperatures above 72°F (22°C) to prevent stress or illness.
• Use a chiller in warm climates to maintain stable temperatures.

Water Parameters

• pH: 6.5–7.5. Slightly acidic to neutral.
• Ammonia: 0 ppm.
• Nitrite: 0 ppm.
• Nitrate: Below 20 ppm.
• Testing: Use liquid test kits for accuracy (e.g., API Freshwater Master Kit).

Filtration

• Low-flow sponge filters are ideal to prevent strong currents.
• Use canister filters with adjustable outputs for larger tanks.
• Regularly monitor flow rates to ensure axolotls aren’t stressed.

Water Changes

• Replace 20–30% of tank water weekly.
• Dechlorinate tap water with a conditioner like Seachem Prime.

3. Nutrition

Diet

• Primary: High-quality sinking pellets formulated for carnivores.
• Supplement:
• Earthworms (nightcrawlers are ideal).
• Frozen or live bloodworms.
• Occasional treats: Daphnia or small shrimp.
• Avoid fatty foods like feeder fish and high-protein items like beef heart.

Feeding Frequency

• Juveniles: Daily.
• Adults (12+ months): Every other day. Adjust based on body condition.

Feeding Techniques

• Hand-feed using tongs for portion control.
• Spot-feed in separate containers to maintain tank cleanliness.

4. Health Management

Monitoring Behavior

• Watch for signs of stress, such as gill curling, frequent floating, or lack of appetite.
• Check for physical injuries, discoloration, or fungal growth.

Common Issues

• Fungal Infections: Treat with salt baths (non-iodized salt, 2–3 tsp/gallon) or antifungal medications.
• Parasites: Consult a vet for specific treatments.
• Ammonia Burns: Address water quality immediately and monitor healing.

Quarantine Procedures

• Quarantine new axolotls for at least 30 days in a separate tank.
• Observe for signs of illness before introducing them to the main habitat.

5. Breeding and Genetics

Breeding Preparation

• Maturity: Axolotls reach sexual maturity at 12–18 months.
• Condition breeders with nutrient-rich diets for several weeks.

Spawning

• Use cooler water temperatures and increased photoperiods to simulate breeding season.
• Males deposit spermatophores; females collect them and lay eggs within 24 hours.

Egg Care

• Separate eggs into a nursery tank to avoid predation.
• Maintain temperature at 65°F (18°C) for optimal development.
• Feed hatchlings live baby brine shrimp or micro worms.

6. Behavioral Enrichment

• Rearrange tank decor periodically to stimulate curiosity.
• Introduce safe items like floating ping pong balls for interaction.
• Observe and document behavior to identify individual preferences.

7. Advanced Troubleshooting

Temperature Spikes

• Use frozen water bottles for temporary cooling.
• Install a thermostat-regulated chiller for reliable long-term solutions.

Disease Diagnosis

• Establish a relationship with an exotic animal vet.
• Perform necropsies on deceased axolotls to understand causes of death and prevent issues in the future.

8. Documentation and Research

• Keep a detailed log of water parameters, diet, and health issues.
• Participate in axolotl conservation forums and scientific research to stay updated on best practices.

By following this expert care guide, you can ensure your axolotls thrive in a healthy, enriched environment, showcasing their unique beauty and behaviors.

🎄 A Heartfelt Thank You This Holiday Season 🎄

This holiday season, we had the incredible opportunity to help 16 families receive hats, gloves, toys, food, gas, and other holiday essentials. None of this would have been possible without YOU—our loyal customers and supporters.

Because of your trust and kindness, my family was able to give back to families in need, and I am beyond grateful for each and every one of you. Programs like this hold a special place in my heart because, as a kid, my family benefited from similar acts of generosity.

A huge shoutout to this amazing community and everything you do to lift each other up. Together, we’ve made a real difference this season.

Wishing you all a very Merry Christmas and a holiday season filled with love, joy, and kindness.

Why We Do What We Do at Frog Family 🐸❤️

At Frog Family Reptile & Amphibians, we’re not just running a business—we’re sharing a passion. This is a place where families can come together to experience the wonder of nature’s most fascinating critters and create lasting memories.

When you shop with us this holiday season, you’re not helping a chain store CEO buy their next $80k truck, fancy vacation, or mansion (or funding their next big divorce 😂).

Instead, you’re supporting a small, family-owned business that pours its heart into every interaction. Your support helps us create a space where kids light up learning about reptiles , families bond over all the creatures of this planet, and everyone gains a deeper appreciation for the amazing creatures we share this world with.

We do this because we care—about you, your family, and the community we’re so proud to be part of. Every visit, every purchase, and every smile helps us continue to inspire and share our love for reptiles and amphibians.

Stop by anytime—we’d love to welcome you into our world. Thank you for being part of our Frog Family. 🐢🦎🐍 ❤️
