The Dumped Diaries #121

Meet Olaf. He is in horrible condition. Jaundiced due to a liver issue, ripped ears, has over a dozen puncture wounds on his sides and face - some abscessed, some not.

It’s clear he almost lost his life to a predator.

If you read our Dumped Diaries over the past 2 days, you’ll have noticed that the “O” buns have all come from the same place.

Originally we went out to search for 1 bunny (still unlocated) but quickly found 5+. We heard reports from neighbors that a local person bought them in July and released them to roam in the neighborhood.

Reported numbers of this colony have wildly fluctuated from 1 bun to 12+. We know the number was large at this undisclosed location, but also that many have passed away over the past 6 months. We weren’t notified about the situation until 2 days ago.

Elements have claimed the lives of several, cars hit others - even as recently as the day we were alerted about the situation, predators are Odessa’s newborns, and more. We’ve found bunnies in alleyways, in yards, sitting next to the bodies of their dead friends. It is a nightmare.

Olaf was just caught today.

He’s scared, hungry, extremely wounded, and filled with parasites. But thanks to your support, we were able to catch him and he’s off to a foster home while awaiting neuter and other emergency vetting.

Emergency update. We need your help.

In the last 24 hours, we’ve rescued 10 bunnies. Most of them dumped outside in 15 degree weather.

But the calls keep coming. In just the past 12 hours:

- 5 more dumped bunnies have been reported.
- 4 bunnies (caught after being dumped) are waiting for help at 2 separate animal controls.

Here’s the reality:

Tomorrow morning, we’re heading out in 19 degree weather to catch 2 more dumped bunnies with the very last of our available space. After that, we’re completely full.

The remaining 3 dumped bunnies will have to stay outside, vulnerable to predators, cars, and the elements.

As for the 4 bunnies waiting in animal controls:
- 2 are safe until we have room.
- 2 will be euthanized unless space opens up.

It’s heartbreaking but we are utilizing every single resource, space, and dollar we have. It’s just not enough.

Please consider donating or becoming a local foster. Will you help us?

The Dumped Diaries #120

Hello, I’m Odessa.

I was found in an alleyway, very scared and very still. A neighbor had purchased at least 7 or 8 of us in July, thinking it’d be really fun to watch us roam around his backyard like cottontails.

But we’re not the same species as cottontails and the world isn’t kind to dumped domesticated rabbits. My friends and I didn’t stand a chance.

I saw some of them hit by cars, their tiny bodies left on the street. Others disappeared in the night, taken by predators. My babies included. I can’t forget the fear. We were all scared, all the time.

I’m one of the only survivors. Somehow, I made it through months of scorching heat, hunger, and danger. But the scars of survival run deep. My body is worn and exhausted. I’ve endured more than any rabbit should ever have to.

I need an emergency spay now. I’ve had litters before, but none of my babies survived. The elements and predators made sure of that. Each loss has broken a piece of me.

This shouldn’t happen to any rabbit. The best way to stop stories like mine is through education. People need to understand that rabbits are not disposable pets and dumping them is a death sentence. You can help. Invite your friends to like this page and learn more about proper rabbit care.

I’m lucky to have been rescued, but luck shouldn’t have to play a part in our survival. Please, help me and others like me.

Grammy spent 8+ years in a cage without hay or enrichment.

Her entire life was dismal at best, until one of our volunteers drove 11 hours round trip to rescue Grammy and Pops - another senior from the same situation.

We cheered like proud parents when she got to eat her first bites of hay ever. It was Grammys first taste of her future.

Her foster mom says, “Grammy is a big girl, but she’s also a big sweetheart! Just so chill and appreciative of any pets and attention you give her. This girl is an absolute angel! She came to us with a severely infected eye, but it is getting better every day!

This is her favorite spot on the couch and she’ll just chill here and watch everybody else hustle and bustle around. She’s not bothered by anything and occasionally will give one of the kitty cats a smooch.”

Grammy has had her tear ducts flushed, has been spayed, and fully vetted. She is a VERY large bunny
these pictures don’t do her justice.

We’d love to find her another senior bondmate who she can spend the rest of her life with.

Stratus and Cumulus are 4.5 years old and looking for their family! Can you help us find them?

Their foster mom says, “Stratus and her brother Cumulus! Her name came first because she is definitely the ring leader and he follows suit. These two have been at Dolly’s just a few short months. They are the most social buns I’ve encountered so far and haven’t met a stranger!

The first week they did absolutely nothing but lounge around. After receiving treatment for internal parasites they are brand new buns! Now they free roam with the best of them and love every second. They have a newfound love of treats and thoroughly enjoy exploring and getting their zoomies in.

These two would do great in any home! They love kids of all ages and thrive on petties. Pics are very hard to get, especially of Stratus, because clearly she wants to see what’s in your hand
.or she’d prefer you just to drop whatever is in your hand so you can, of course, give her attention insteadđŸ€â€

Please note that they came in with pretty long nails, so we’re slowly working the quicks down.

If you’d like to adopt them, click here: https://forms.gle/xatrAFuJh65GYqTG9

Introducing our new bunny safe hay racks!

Big shoutout to our amazing volunteer Robert. Yes, one of our primary rabbit catchers! Not only does he save buns, but he’s also got some serious handyman skills. He used to make hay racks elsewhere, but now he’s bringing his talents exclusively to Dolly’s!

The hay racks have a new and improved design, so they’re 100% bunny safe. Less hay waste too!

- Each one is 14.5" long, 10" tall, 4.75" wide, so they’ll fit perfectly in your bun’s setup.

- They’re with all bunny-safe materials and we specifically use racks with no coating on the bars for curious chewers to peel off and munch on.

- Each is designed with smaller holes, so they’re easy for buns to pull hay from, but nearly impossible for them to climb into. No buns getting their heads or bodies stuck on our watch!

And the best part is that they’re big enough that you’ll only need to refill them every couple of days. Perfect for singletons, bonded pairs, or even trios.

We’ve also designed them with no top lid, so that your bunny can’t use them to launch their great escape. And they’ll spend more time eating the hay inside instead of chewing on the lid.

For now, these hay racks are available in-store only, so we can gather your feedback and fine tune the design even more if needed. After that, they’ll be available online!

Stop by Dolly’s Dream Store to check them out. And don’t forget that everything is on sale in person for 20% off THIS Saturday!

These hay racks are Robert approved, bunny tested, designed to make your life a little easier, and to be safer for your buns.

The Dumped Diaries #119

I wasn’t always alone. There used to be at least 7 of us.

In July, when they left us in the alley, there were others like me. Soft fur, big ears, scared eyes. We didn’t understand why we were thrown away, why the people that loved us most would turn their backs on us without even a glance goodbye.

The days were long, but the nights were longer.

We huddled together for safety at first, but one by one, my friends started to disappear. Some were chased. Some were run over by cars. And some just never woke up after the temperatures dropped dangerously low.

Yesterday, I found one of us in the middle of the alley. I don’t know his name, but I stayed with him. He wasn’t breathing. He’d been hit by a car. After 6 months of survival, he took his last breath on the day he would have finally been saved. His little body was still warm, but his eyes were closed, and I knew he was gone. Something more than sleep.

I sat near him for hours, hoping maybe he’d get back up. But he didn’t and no one came for him. No one cared. So I sat. And waited. For what? I don’t know.

A couple hours later, I heard gentle voices. They weren’t yelling or angry. They were calling softly, shining lights into the shadows where I was hiding. I wanted to run, but I was too tired, too scared.

They said 7 of us were dumped here. 7. But by the time they found me, there were only 3 left. I thought I was the only survivor, but 2 more bunnies were discovered several hundred feet away. I don’t know how I survived. How they survived.

My rescuers have given me a name now - Omar. It’s my first name and I feel very proud. They say I’m safe. They say I’ll never have to feel hungry or scared again. But how do I believe that when I’ve seen so much? When I’ve watched my friends disappear, one by one? No wonder they tell me I have sad eyes.

I can’t stop thinking about the little body in the road. I can’t stop wondering what it means to survive when everyone else is gone.

They tell me this is the start of a better life. I hope they’re right. I hope, someday, I’ll feel safe again. But for now, I can only grieve for the ones who didn’t make it. The ones I couldn’t save.

———

We were just hours too late for the bunny that was hit by a car. The little guy survived for 6 brutal months, only to be killed the day we learned about them. They all endured 6 months of silence - 6 months before anyone told us about these dumped bunnies.

Yesterday, we also rushed out on a call about an escaped meat rabbit. We wanted to get to him before his butcher did. Despite searching and searching and searching, we had no luck. How many more are out there, scared, suffering, and unseen?

We can’t do this alone. Donate, share, and consider a reoccurring donation.

If you’d like to help support Omar, click the links in the comments. Please. We need your help. THEY need your help.

The Dumped Diaries #118

Ozzie Smith, named after the legendary shortstop, has been dodging life’s curveballs since being dumped outside in July.

He’s only survived the last 6 months due to sheer luck.

Due to where he was found, it’s highly likely he was intentionally dumped. No doubt he’s been through the wringer. His coat is dull, his body thin, and his ear has a gaping hole in it. An unfortunate wound from being attacked by a predator.

Despite his rough appearance, Ozzie is a fighter with a gentle heart. Our team was able to catch him today and immediately brought him into the warmth of indoors. The poor guy has been living in the snow.

Here he’ll receive the medical attention he needs. He’ll be dewormed, have a f***l test, a vet check to address his ear, will be neutered and more. He deserves to be healthy and comfortable.

To the person who abandoned him: you underestimated this bunny’s strength. Ozzie Smith is on his way to the Hall of Fame - not on the baseball field, but in the hearts of all of our volunteers.

Stay tuned for updates on Ozzie’s recovery and transformation.

This Giving Tuesday, we caught not just one, but THREE dumped rabbits. Please click the comments below if you’d like to help make a difference in their lives.

Ozzie Smith, welcome to Dolly’s.

Naboo and Tatooine are being adopted!

This fluffy duo of brothers was released outside by a family, who had enjoyed watching them roam in the backyard for months.

The duo kept escaping the yard, so neighbors called us to catch them and assess the situation. After speaking with the owners about proper rabbit care, they decided to “donate” the brothers to us.

And thank goodness they did - Naboo was so sickly that we honestly believed he was going to pass away, even with the treatment he underwent here for numerous internal infections.

Thankfully Naboo made a full recovery and both brothers were neutered. They just recently met DDH alum Virgil, who recently lost her bondmate to appendicitis, through our professional bonding program.

The trio hit it off in what we’re considering a bit of a “Mother Hen” situation. Virgil acts as their mother and protector, always almost sitting on them like a hen would sit on her chicks.

We’re thrilled to see everybun hit it off so well and can’t wait for them to be spoiled forever!

P.S. don’t forget it’s Giving Tuesday! If you’d like to help support our rescue, check out our previous post.

Our rescue doesn’t have a dedicated phone number, but our storefront does.

However, the store phone is only meant to connect with our store volunteers. It fields calls about store hours/product availability/etc.

Yesterday, it was flooded with numerous rescue related calls. Some summaries are below.

One person called because they bought a bunny from Rural King, who was sick and passed away without ever seeing a vet. They wanted a replacement so their child wouldn’t realize their bunny had died.

Someone else called because they were building some “really cool outdoor cages” and wanted to know if we had enough rabbits to help them fill their new cages for free.

Another person called because they took “really good care” of their bunny and even let him in the house sometimes. But unfortunately a dog got into his outdoor hutch and “shredded him.” They wanted to know if we offered our bunnies for free.

That’s not it though. We then got a call from a family on their way in to our rabbit supply storefront to pick up a bunny without applying. We explained our adoption process and that we didn’t have any bunnies at the store that day (Sunday during a heavy snow). Despite this, they came in, and when we explained again it was a Sunday so there were no bunnies, they slammed the door and sped off.

But wait! Another call! A woman refuses to fix her 4 bunnies, so they keep getting into giant bloody fights. She didn’t want to spend the money to fix them. But since they’re all housed together and she wanted to swap us 2 of her 4 unspayed females in exchange for 2 of our spayed females. For free.

Every single time, we use these calls as an opportunity for education and to direct them to our online surrender request form.

The requests we get are often wild, and many of the issues could easily be resolved or prevented with proper education. Which is why education remains our top priority.

Meet Pops!

At 8+ years old, Pops is ready to be the biggest blessing under your tree this year
and he’s even rocking a festive bow in his first two photos!

This adorable senior spent his entire life in a cage. No hay, no toys, no enrichment. Just a sad, empty existence. But everything changed when we drove over 11 hours to rescue him and his unbonded friend.

Now Pops is making up for lost time and is ready for a life filled with love. He deserves the very best retirement home.

His foster mom says, “Pops is a senior guy full of love! Neutered, great with his litter box, and ready to meet a lady friend. He’s low-key, absolutely adorable, and lives for pets!"

Today, someone came in asking to adopt a bunny for their 2 year old child.

Let’s get real. A 2 year old can’t even find their own nose half the time, let alone take care of a rabbit. They’re drinking from a sippy cup still and you want to hand them a fragile 5 pound prey animal?

If you’ve ever met a toddler, you know their version of “gentle” is one firm “pat-pat” away from a wrestling move.

Bunnies are not starter pets or pets for toddlers. They’re high maintenance, fragile, and require more care than most people realize. We're talking specialized diets, litter training, vet visits, socialization, and an environment free of sticky little fingers trying to “share” snacks like Goldfish crackers and Play-Doh.

Rabbits deserve responsible, committed adults to care for them. No matter how cute it sounds, your toddler won’t be cleaning litter boxes or chopping up fresh greens anytime soon.

Bunnies are family members, not toys. Set them (and your kiddos) up for success by waiting until they’re older and ready to share the responsibility of pet ownership with you!

If you ever want to see if a bunny is right for you, take our FREE 45 minute virtual education course. We promise you’ll learn a bunch! https://forms.gle/rNTYqNijXz9Qc65i8

Adoptable brothers Storm and Cloud escaped from a backyard butcher. A place no bunny should ever be.

These 2 boys found a way to escape and bravely stuck by one another’s side. When we caught Storm and Cloud, they were soaked from the pouring rain. It was clear they were tiny, scared, and in need of help.

Now, the brothers have been fully vetted, neutered, and are still the best of friends. They’ve come so far from their rough start and are ready for a forever home to call their own.

Their foster mom says, “Storm and Cloud are two sweet boys looking for their forever home.

They both a bit reserved at first, but once they get to know you, they’ll show their personalities. Them are both nosey and always hungry.

They love pets and lots of attention, soft hugging bunny bed and to listen to stories.”

Bunnies aren’t meat.

This Thanksgiving, Banana Bread (a bunny dumped at our storefront in a cardboard box) posed as a Thanksgiving turkey for a moment of bittersweet humor.

But here’s the hard truth: for millions of rabbits worldwide, they don’t get to be cherished family members. Instead, they’re still viewed as food. Cuisine instead of companions.

Every day, bunnies are bred and slaughtered for meat, their lives reduced to commodities in a system that doesn’t recognize them as the intelligent, social, and loving creatures they are. The heartbreaking reality? Most people don’t think twice about eating rabbit. In Missouri, they’re neither classified as livestock or pets. That means anyone can breed and anyone can butcher.

They’re served in high end restaurants, sold in grocery stores, and seen as no different from a slab of meat. A neighbor just 3 doors down from our storefront breeds and slaughters rabbits in her backyard. It’s completely legal, and no one blinks an eye.

But bunnies aren’t livestock. They’re sentient beings. They form bonds, feel pain, and express joy. If you’ve ever had the privilege of knowing one, you’ll know they’re as deserving of life and compassion as any dog or cat. A bunnies place is in your heart, not on your plate.

The idea of eating rabbit should feel as absurd as eating the family dog. Yet, it happens. It’s normalized. And the worst part? Some of the very same bunnies bred for meat are dumped outdoors when their owners decide they’re no longer worth keeping around.

Would you eat bunny? Before answering, think of Banana Bread. Think of the bunny who snuggles into your lap. Think of the bunny who thumps when they’re upset, or binkies with pure joy.

This week, let’s give thanks for all animals by seeing them as they are: friends, not food.

Yesterday, we got nearly 4 inches of snow at Dolly’s and it was magical!

To celebrate, we gave the bunnies in our professional bunnysitting program a chance to experience their first snow day. A little snowball here, a baking sheet of snow there.

It’s the perfect way to let them explore the wonders of winter and you can do it at home too!

When it snows, you can scoop up a small snowball or spread some snow on a baking sheet and let them explore. Just don’t bring them outside and set them in the snow. They’ll get too cold and too wet.

Most bunnies love sniffing, digging, and even nibbling at the fluffy white stuff. As you can see, most of our little guys were interested and a few couldn’t have cared less. Classic bunnies!

If you want to try this with your bunny, always monitor them. Snow can be dirty, so it’s not safe for them to eat too much or drink melted snow.

Have you ever let your bunny play in the snow? Share your pics or stories of their winter adventure with us in the comments below!

(Also if you need bunnysitting this December, shoot us a message! Spots are almost full!)

We did something pretty cool today
we rescued our 400th bunny of the year!

Meet Retro!

Retro is a 2 year old Holland Lop with big ears and an even bigger story. She was dumped, caught, taken to our local shelter, adopted, then returned to our local shelter. Her passport is bigger than ours!

This milestone bunny came to us as part of an ongoing partnership with our local county shelter.

We stepped in to take 3 of their bunnies, creating space for their new arrivals, while helping these rabbits get professionally bonded to new friends (hopefully soon!). Retro is the first of the 3 to be highlighted on our page!

Her foster mom says she is incredibly bondable and would absolutely love a bunny friend. Retro is absolutely ready to settle down somewhere permanent and hopes to find a family who loves her!

400 rescues this year alone is a huge number - but it’s still not nearly enough. It’s more than 1 bunny per day - but it’s still not nearly enough. The dumping crisis continues. Each day we get even more messages about bunnies dumped outside, surrendered, or neglected. It doesn’t stop.

This year alone, Retro’s story has played out hundreds of times in different ways for the 400 rabbits we’ve rescued. And despite the work we’ve done, the need for help keeps growing.

You can be part of the solution to this overpopulation and dumping crisis:

- Consider adopting a rescue bunny like Retro.

- Spread the word about responsible rabbit care and ownership by sharing our posts.

- Donate to our rescue bunnies by clicking the links in the comments below.

Retro is more than just a number, she represents everything we’re fighting for.
