We must do better!

Shelters are full of GOOD Dogs! They are there because people have failed them - failed to train- failed to teach- failed to educate themselves- failed to listen- failed to give their new dog time to adjust - failed to teach their children how to treat a dog and respect their space.
We “over” baby them, and return them for separation anxiety, we allow our children to crawl on them, mess with their food and return them when they growl, we get in their personal space time and time again and bring them back when they nip. We treat them like they are disposable and take them to a shelter when they become inconvenient. We yell at them, punish them and they have no idea why- Dogs do not automatically know what you expect of them, we bring them into our homes, with new smells, new sounds, new people, new routines and you expect them to just KNOW what we want them to be.
We do not research the breed, we adopt because “they are cute” with no thought to the work they are bred to do, how big they will get -
We cannot do that with people and we cannot do that with dogs- but we do and when WE fail them- we bring them back ( through no fault of their own ) and label them stupid, neurotic, not good with children, aggressive, untrainable ——
What’s wrong with most dogs in a shelter?
The people who owned them!!

Our Mr. Chewy needs a foster. He is super dog friendly and a sweet guy.

Chewy is 8 years old and lost his home because of his owner's health. He used to live with a Great Dane so bigger dogs do not bother him.

He was returned once because he was depressed without a doggy friend so we would love a foster with other dogs. If interested, contact us and we will discuss him with you.

This is the sweetest old man!
Who has a sweet spot for the seniors? He's about 9 years old, easy going, and his name is Bannister. He came to us thin, weak, and all alone on a cold day. He was grumpy when he came in, after a life of being let down. Oh my gosh, you should see him now.
He's such a happy, easy going, cuddly fellow. He's large - 65 pounds, but prefers long, slow walks so he can smell everything. We all absolutely adore him and can't wait to get him into his forever home (no kitties, please!)
Let's get this guy out of the shelter and onto a couch where he belongs:

Meet Miss Daisy, an adorable Chihuahua mix, about 10 pounds and 10 years young. She came to Needy Paws after being found abandoned in a park in rural Missouri. Daisy is a very happy and friendly little senior lady, and quite the snuggle bug! She enjoys the company of other small dogs, although she would love to have your lap all to herself to snuggle on.

Daisy has recently been diagnosed with a medical condition that involves a Grade 4-5 heart murmur and an enlarged heart. She will need to be on several heart medications for the rest of her life. We are looking for a quiet home, no children, no large dogs, a fenced yard to go potty for her safety, and someone who is home a lot, as she wants to be with her people. We know this is a tall order, but we believe the perfect home for her is out there! Please help us find Daisy a perfect match to live out her golden years.

It took me longer than usual to make this video. I kept putting it off simply because I didn’t want to do it. Kept telling myself Sullie is still over there with her family. But I knew when I got that text that started with the words “I dreaded having to tell you….” I knew it when I saw those words. Those words were all I could see before I actually clicked on the message. But I knew. Sullie was one of my heart dogs as much as any client’s dogs could be my heart dog, she was one of those. Losing her is definitely like losing one of my own. Hence, all the selfies of us in the video. I’m so glad I got to see her just a week before. If I had known it would be the last time I’d see her I would have stayed longer and just sat and reminisced with her. But I know she knew I loved her. My heart goes out to her family. It’s been a rough two weeks. First, we heard of Sophie’s passing. I’m so late making these videos because it’s something I put off as long as I can. Finishing the videos always seems to finalize something I don’t want finalized. And although Sophie had moved out of state a couple years ago with her brother and Mommy, we never did forget her and all the special times we got to share with her. We will continue to remember her spunky, adorable, cheerfulness and this video will help us do that. We know Toby was there to meet her at the Bridge, and that makes us smile. R.I.P. We have watched pets come and go over the years. So much love and too many tears. What used to be Sullie & Charlie is now Jake & Sullie. Sullie is getting up there in age and slowing down now so every time we get to see her is even more special. Here’s to you Sullie. One of our first 🥰🥰🥰

Hank had a tumor removed from above his right eye that ended up being a low grade mast cell tumor and the scar has almost healed! He is such a Trooper!! Their Mommy made them a delicious doggy cake to enjoy!!

This beautiful face arrived at Rainbow Bridge yesterday to join her brother. We have no doubt they were overjoyed to see each other. Our hearts go out to Heidi’s Mommy & Daddy, left here to mourn the loss of their precious fur baby. We thank them for sharing her and Jake with us all these years. R.I.P. HEIDI 🌈
