โ€œI donโ€™t care about papers.โ€

โ€œI just want a pet, not a show dog.โ€

โ€œWho cares if itโ€™s out of standard, I just want a companion.โ€

I see this time and time again when people are on the hunt for a new puppy to add to their family. It is often used as an excuse to purchase from a less than reputable breeder. They feel they donโ€™t need all the โ€œbells and whistlesโ€ because they do not understand why they are so important.

Breeding should be for a purpose, and it is okay if that purpose is companionship, but it should still be done in order to better the breed. So, what exactly does that mean?

It is a multifaceted concept, but in short bettering the breed means breeding toward the standard, breeding away from flaws, breeding for ideal temperament and drive, and breeding away from heritable diseases.

The breed standard encompasses everything from structure to temperament to color. It is designed in such a way to provide a dog most well suited physically and mentally for whatever job they were meant to do. The breed standard is also one of the wonderful things about owning a well bred purebred. It means you know exactly what you are getting into, from size to energy level to drive to coat type. When the breed standard is ignored, you end up with dogs with structural problems that lead to degenerative joint issues or dogs with temperaments the exact opposite of what they were supposed to be which can often result in dogs being rehomed.

So, while you may not want a show dog, a breeder who shows their dogs in conformation is proving objectively that their breeding stock fits the standard and a breeder who shows in sport or work is proving their dog has the correct trainability and drive. Every litter from two show dog parents is going to consist primarily of pet dogs, which is a better source for your family pet than the backyard breeder you found on Craigslist, because

Breeding away from heritable diseases is one of the most important aspects of reputable breeding in my eyes. It means doing thorough health testing based on what the breed club recommends and only breeding those who pass. The goal is to create an even healthier next generation. Health tests are one way of doing this, but registration and pedigrees are the other. For example, there are not any reliable DNA tests for epilepsy which is one of the few issues Siberian huskies can have. Because there are no tests, it is important for a breeder to be able to study pedigrees and avoid lines known to carry it. So, while you may not see the merit in papers, they serve a purpose and an important one.
(It is also important to be aware that papers/registration ๐—ฎ๐—น๐—ผ๐—ป๐—ฒ does not make a dog well bred.)

The world of reputable breeding is a big one and it can be a confusing one, but it is important to understand these things. The sooner we stop making these excuses for backyard breeders due to lack of education, the sooner we can put an end to them.

Tools don't abuse dogs, People do. Don't hate the tool, hate the uneducated user. We need to be preaching for better guidance and education rather than full out ban. GENETICALLY, SCIENTIFICALLY AND MENTALLY most Tools (with PROPER use and an effective reward and marker system) make more sense to a dog than implementing human understanding. To use human emotion/mentality in training is doing a disservice to your animal. If you're not intimately versed in the PROPER introduction and use of a tool, you LITERALLY don't know enough to have an opinion. Tools = freedom. Tools = safety. Tools = control. Tools = understanding. You can kill someone with a plastic spoon if you try hard enough.

I'll get off my soap box now, but this is absolutely one hill i will die on.

Interesting info found on a group im in. Common misconceptions in service dogs. Unfortunately I couldn't repost original.

*****I think everyone needs to know this information. I spoke with Latrice at the ADA (800-514-0301) today. I asked about two key issues that come up a lot- wolfdogs and protection dogs. As this is just information, I am going to post the answers to both questions as I am sharing this on different groups.

1- Wolfdogs: According to the ADA- dogs with wolf content can be service dogs as long as they are properly trained and task trained.

2-Protection dogs: ADA does not restrict the type of training the animal has. A dog has to be task trained for the handler and โ€œprotectionโ€ may NOT be a task. If the dog is task trained an properly trained- it may also have a protection training background.

Please note: All animals used must be in control of the handler and be trained for at least 2 tasks. Uncontrollable dogs/dogs with no obedience/dogs who are aggressive towards people & other dogs should not be used. I also am NOT advocating Mid or High content Wolfdogs be used for service. However Low content, depending on the dog and training, could be.

This is not to start arguments or debates. Itโ€™s information directly from the ADA. If you donโ€™t agree- call for yourself. ๐Ÿ˜Š

Your Dog is Not a Baby!

Todays culture is absolutely ruining dogs and as behaviourists we are seeing more and more preventable problems appearing not only at our facilities but in the public domain too!

People are treating their dogs like children, and no matter how much you say it, or what you believe, they are not children. They are dogs... An apex predator with forty two teeth in their head and a bite pressure that can break bones.

They deserve treating like dogs!

Somehow treating your dog like a dog has become a taboo subject and its because of the warped, snowflake generation that's flooding the industry.

Can't say no to a dog.
Can't go in cold weather with a dog.
Can't let a dog get muddy.
Can't give a dog a job.
Can't feed a dog raw meat.
If your dog is in shape its too skinny.

We are walking around in a world where giving your dog a job is cruel beyond belief but having a dog 30kg overweight with diabetes falling out of its ears is absolutely fine. It's warped and twisted and wrong.

They are dogs! Treat them as dogs. You cannot take any pristine animal on this earth and pretend that it's a baby. Oh hello, this is my whale, he is my baby. It doesn't work like that, and if you respect the dog, it doesn't work with them either.

We have to push back on this snowflake mentality because it is literally killing dogs. Dogs are being euthanised every day purely because nobody told them what rules they were supposed to follow or because they weren't given a job they so desperately wanted.

Let's start honouring our dogs for the absolutely amazing creatures they are. Dogs are magnificent, majestic, intelligent, robust. For me, they are the best animal on the planet so let's stop killing them and treat them for exactly what they are.

Honour your dog.
