🐴🦷 The Age Factor in Equine Dental Care: A Carousel Guide 🦷🐴

Swipe through our latest carousel to explore how a horse's age significantly influences their dental care needs. From the tender age of foals to the golden years of senior horses, each phase requires specific attention to ensure their health, comfort, and quality of life. 🌟

1️⃣ Foals: Immediate post-birth exams and periodic checks in the first year are crucial for spotting and correcting congenital dental abnormalities.

2️⃣ Yearlings: Sharp enamel points can form, needing floating to prevent cheek and tongue damage.

3️⃣ Training Age (2-3 years): A comprehensive dental check-up is vital before training begins, focusing on floating and checking for retained caps.

4️⃣ Young Horses (2-5 years): This period demands more frequent dental exams due to rapid dental maturation and the shedding and replacement of teeth.

5️⃣ Mature Horses: Annual exams are essential for maintaining correct dental alignment and early problem detection.

6️⃣ Senior Horses (17+ years): They face a higher risk of periodontal disease and require early diagnosis and treatment, alongside maintenance of a correct bite plane.

7️⃣ Horses over 20: Annual dental evaluations and nutritional counseling are key to sustaining their conditioning and quality of life into their third and fourth decades.

Understanding the unique dental needs of horses at different life stages is essential for their overall well-being.

🛑 Most Common Reasons for Weight Loss in Horses 🐴

Maintaining your horse’s weight is a simple equation:
Calories in - Calories burned or not absorbed = Body condition.
If your horse is losing weight, here are the top 3 reasons why:

🔸 Not Enough Feed/Poor Quality Feed

If your horse isn’t consuming more calories than they burn, they will lose weight.
Every horse has a unique metabolism—some need more calories to maintain weight, while others stay healthy with less.

🔸 Parasitism

Parasites can prevent nutrient absorption, leading to weight loss.
Some horses can handle a higher parasite load, while others may struggle.

🔸 Dental Problems

Horses need to chew roughage (hay, grass) thoroughly for proper digestion.
Uneven tooth wear can cause pain, preventing proper chewing and nutrient absorption.
Regular dental exams and floating can help maintain healthy teeth and weight.
Other health issues can cause weight loss, but these three are the most common and often have easy solutions. Consulting with your vet about diet, deworming, and dental care can solve 90% of weight loss cases. ✅

FUN FACT FRIDAY!

Are you familiar with the many adaptations that help your horse stay warm during the cold winter months?

🌾 Hindgut digestion of hay produces the most heat, acting as a small furnace inside of the horse. This is why free choice; good quality hay is so important in the winter.

💪 Horses have a huge muscle mass and muscle activity produces heat. This includes running and playing and even shivering if their body temperature starts to drop. It is important to remember that these activities also will result in a bigger caloric demand so free choice hay and in some cases, grain, is often needed.

🧥 To blanket or not to blanket is a constant debate but either way, as it starts to get cold your horse will grow a thicker coat. If you decide to leave your horse unblanketed you may notice that they look “fluffy”. This is due to a phenomenon called piloerection where the hair stands up to better trap air within. Two layers of the coat also help with warmth. The inner layer is softer and has air pockets to create an insulating layer. The outer layer is coarse and has oils that keep moisture from penetrating the insulating layer and keep the horse warm.

⚖️ Wild horses go into the winter heavier than ideal, and the fat serves as an extra layer of insulation. However, if a horse is going to be kept heavily blanketed and in a barn during the cold weather months this is unnecessary and can lead to obesity related issues.

🦵Their distal limbs (below the knees and hocks) are made of mostly bones and tendons, tissues that are resistant to the cold temperatures.

🦶The hooves have an alternative route of blood circulation through larger vessels that can be used in low temperatures. This is why horses can stand in snow without detrimental effects.

👃A horse’s nose has a robust blood supply and is rounded so that it is less susceptible to frostbite than a human’s nose.
